PHILADELPHIA -- Philadelphia broadcast legend Georgie Woods has died at
the age of 78.
Woods, who moved to Florida in 1996, likely suffered a heart attack at
his Boynton Beach home. That's according to his longtime companion,
Doris Harris.
Woods came to Philadelphia from New York in 1953 and hit the airwaves
of WDAS-AM and WHAT-A-M. He went on to bring the talents of emerging
artists such as the Temptations, Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson to
the airwaves.
In the 1960s, Woods used the airwaves to talk about the civil-rights
movement. He would sometimes stop the music for hours to talk about the
movement and talk about the work of its leaders such as Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr.
He was due to return to Philadelphia in the fall to be inducted into
the Philadelphia Broadcast Pioneers Hall of Fame.
He wasn't one of my favorites, but in an era when most R & R DJs had titles
or nicknames, his was pretty hip:
"Georgie Woods, the Guy with the Goods"
Some other Phila. DJ nicknames:
Joe Niagara - The Rockin' Bird
Hy Lit - Hyski-O'Rooney-McFoudy-O'Zoot (sp)
Don L. Brink - the All-Night Fink
King George Michael
Dr. Don Rose
Cowboy Jim O'Brien
Dangerous Dan Donovan
Long John Wade
Dave "The Rave" Parks
John "Records" Landecker
Butterball
Jerry Blavat - "The Geator with the Heater"

...Landecker claims Records is actually his mother's maiden name and his
given middle name, thus not a nickname (although it works just as well
either way)...
> Butterball
> Jerry Blavat - "The Geator with the Heater"
...you forgot one of the most influential of all time: "Big Daddy" Tom
Donahue, who worked at WIBG for ten years before moving to San Francisco...

...problem is, The Geator tried to have a Heater used on Hyski -- or didn't
you know that already? ;-) ...

Philadelphia Broadcast Legend Georgie Woods Dead at 78
By KYW's David Madden
"The guy with the goods" is gone. Legendary Philadelphia radio
personality Georgie Woods died Saturday after suffering a heart attack. He
was 78.
Bet you didn't know Woods was the man who coined the term "Blue Eyed Soul"
back in the 1960's for white groups who climbed the R&B charts like the
Righteous Brothers.
He also helped make careers for soul superstars like Jerry Butler..not
just on WDAS and WHAT, but in shows at the old Uptown Theatre.
'The Geator,' Jerry Blavat, remembers Woods as a community activist.
"He picketed Girard Estate back then and he also ran for City Council. So
Georgie, other than being 'the guy with the goods' also realized that it
was important for him to use his microphone for his community."
Woods left radio for Boynton Beach, Florida about a decade ago but was due
to return to Philadelphia in the fall to be inducted into the Broadcast
Pioneers Hall of Fame.
