YANKTON, S.D. - Martha Binder, who lived in three different centuries
and was South Dakota's oldest living resident, died Monday at age 108.
She was born in Tabor in 1896 and lived on her own until she was 98.
She most recently was a resident of Avera Sister James Care Center in
Yankton.
"Our mother couldn't believe it when they said she turned 100 years
old, and she would have turned 109 in July. It was sad that she didn't
understand how old she was and the meaning of it," said her daughter,
Sylvia Gratzfeld.
Binder was the state's Centenarian of the Year for both 2003 and 2004.
The Century Club, sponsored by the South Dakota Health Care Foundation,
bestows the honor on the state's oldest living resident.
