William Goldman, widely credited as being one of the
greatest screenwriters in Hollywood history, has died at
the age of 87.

Having come to prominence in the 1950s as a novelist before
turning to write for film, scooped Oscar honours with his
work on both Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and All the
President’s Men and was described by author Sean Egan as
“one of the late twentieth century’s most popular
storytellers.”

As pointed out in the other thread on the subject, "The Princess Bride" is arguably the film with the greatest number of memorable quotes of any film of the last 40 years, which is really saying something. Anybody who is a fan of the movie can reel off quotes from the film one after another. It quickly became a cult film, but unlike most cult films, it was a truly great film, and was so well-written.

Well, that could be because your ostensibly arbitrary "the last 40 years" just happens to barely preclude "Monty Python and the Holy Grail"

I didn't intentionally decide to ignore that movie, but that too is on the short list of great quotable movies in film history, along with "Casablanca", "The Godfather", "The Big Lebowski", "Pulp Fiction" and a few others. I just picked 40 years since that is when I started really watching films. Most online lists I have seen of the most quotable films of all time are clearly composed by people in their 20's and are comprised only of movies made over the past 25 years.

That being said about somehow overlooking "Monty Python and the Holy Grail", while I've always enjoyed the movie, I always preferred "Life of Brian".

It's slightly over 40 years old, but "Star Wars" springs to mind as a
contender. Within the last 40 years, I'd name "Mean Girls" and
"Forrest Gump," but neither of those two is really up there with
"Princess Bride" on either numbers or quality. (I personally hate
"Forrest Gump," but I can't deny that a lot of it has entered the
culture.)

A couple of more recent contenders might be "Office Space" and "Galaxy
Quest"..."The Big Lebowski" has moved up in the ranks in the last year
or so....r

The most famous line of course is: "Mein Fuhrer, I can walk!", but I was always partial to "I'll get those bomb doors open if it harelips everybody on Bear Creek" along with the description of the contents of the survival kits:"Survival kit contents check.
