1. Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald "The lake, it is said, never gives up her
dead when the skies of November turn gloomy."
2. If You Could Read My Mind "I will never be set free as long as I'm a ghost

3. Sundown "She's been looking like the Queen in a sailor's dream"

people at airports that we didn't want to see leaving.)

Here are a couple, it will be different tomorrow.
Restless:
There's a kind of restless feeling and it catches ya off guard
As we gaze off in the distance through the trees in my backyard

Whispers of the North:
The sound is like a song to me
It takes away the pain
The river is the melody
And the sky is the refrain

Here's my current top five ....

1. Anytime is the right time
To get on with a new tomorrow (She's Not The Same)

2. And he who is wise will not criticize
When other men fail at the game (The House You Live In)

3. To be insane beyond belief
Is sometimes the best relief (Stay Loose)

4. But still the pounding of my heart hasn't changed
and leavin's so strange (Now And Then)

5. And if time could heal the wounds, I would tear the threads away
that I might bleed some more (The last Time I Saw Her)

I picked one line from The House You Live In, but actually just about
every line in the entire song is a favorite!! ;o)

Seeing as it is Tuesday evening (late) here are a few more that I am
fond of

Saturday Clothes:
So now I'll take the butts away
and put the glasses on the tray,
I'll see you all next Saturday

Is There Anyone Home:
Is there anyone home in this house made of stone?
Anyone inside know my name?

Pony Man:
When its midnight on the meadow and the cats are in the shed
And the river tell a story at the window by my bed

A Painter Passing Through:
If you want to know my secret don't come running after me
For I am just a Painter passing through in History

On the original recording on Endless Wire, it's "rubbin'." My recollection is
that he sang that on "Soundstage" as well. However, when the re-record
appeared on Gord's Gold II, it had changed to "treating". Actually, there's
another line that changed: "The kind of gig I can really dig is swiggin' at
the break of day" on the original recording became "...happens just at the
break of day," by the time of GGII.

Sigh... I've probably always misheard treating as reading. I think
reading makes more sense in the context of test. But I *know* Gordon

What a great thread. Lurk here daily for many years and I enjoy reading each
and every post.
Since the NG is relatively quiet, I was thinking (unusual for me) of a new
thread.
How about "Most unusual cover"? This would be off topic as what I had in
mind would be any cover of any artists music. If the regulars would rather
stay on topic, no problem.
Your thoughts please.

That was my thought too Char, there are just so many great lines. I thought of
a couple of others today that are some of my favorites:

From 10 Degrees: It was out in Arizona, that he heard the lady listening

From Don Quixote: And in a blaze of tangled hooves he gallops off to cross the
dusty plain.
Can't you just see the hooves on that? Just wonderful imagery. I could quote
almost all of Restless too, the imagery in that is just spectacular.

"I'll have a thousand 'fore I'm through" always reminded me of just how empty
bitterness is.

"The streets of the old town are covered with rain, I think I might never know
true love again" is an emotion we have all felt at one time or another. (Bells

I would be very glad to do so John.
I haven't contributed my list because I would just have to copy and paste
all of the songs and lyrics listed on Val's site and that hardly seems fair
play....

"I'll Do Anything" from Shadows
"My love for you is too deep for my eyes to see" but it needs the first one of
that couplet:

"Many's the times I've wished that I were free,
But My love for you is too deep for my eyes to see"...

My favorite song this week....

ARG! I just thought of one of my all-time favorite Gord lines, but I can't
confirm it! I have "Anthology volume 2", but the middle 2 or 3 pages are
missing! Does anybody have the sheet music for Lazy Morning? I think the
sheet music for that song has a great Gord line. It is the notation for
guitarists at the bottom of the page:

"Play thumb and fingers Travis style. If you can't do that, use a flat
pick. If you can't do that...get a job. G.L."

I'm a Martin-owning guitarist, and lifelong (cough) interpreter of
Gord's music - and that line tears my heart out! :>)

And another line that just came to me, that I found wonderfully
succinct in it's power (from "Circle of Steel"):

. . . says: "Look here child - Your father's pride was his means to
provide, and he's serving three years for that reason".

And more that just came to me:

"He talks of better days ahead, and by his words your fortune's read."
(MOTD) - I'd like to think this is kind of Gord's thoughts at this
moment.

"It seemed to me like he never could be like anything I'd ever seen
before." (I'd Do It Again) - another "in-lyric" hope for Gord's
complete recovery.

During one of our guitar-playing sessions in September, Cathy and I played that
song. I slightly altered that verse to "Now he's traded off his Martin/And he
bought himself a Taylor..."

Fortunately, Cathy was too busy playing to be able to take a swing at me! :)

On a serious note, yeah, yeah, I know, "What? Ed? Being serious?!!!"

Being dead as dead could be would not be so bad if it were with a group
of people such as you, and certainly not if it were with friends who
played the songs so well, and played them so faithfully.

Isn't that what it's all about? Finding a place in the world where we
can all say, honestly, that we're happy to be there, happy to be
ensconsed in a place where the music flows, everyone we meet is nice,
and no one can bitch about anything? Oh, and everyone "gets" the
lyrics? Yeah. Is there nothing so sweet as having someone you care
about looking in your eyes over a particular verse and you both just
"get it?" No more words spoken, nothing left to be said, you just both
get it.

Oh, listen, I went on an on and then I decided to spare you. And, as
Bugs Bunny used to say: That's all, Doc!

So, listen, find the words, find the lyrics and tunes, find whatever it
is that lets you be happy. Find it. Grab it. Go with it. Run with
it. Or one day you'll wake up and wonder where it all went. And that
would be a waste.

John, I can't resist jumping in here and saying I sure wish you were here in
Palo Alto tonight! I went to a twice-monthly open-mic downtown this evening,
and thought it would be fun to do "Drifters." So I started it out--a song I've
played many, many times--and suddenly drew a complete blank on the first line!
At least I provided some comedic relief when I said (while still strumming),
"This is a great song...and it's too bad I can't remember the first line...so
here's another Lightfoot song called 'Stay Loose,'" and I played that one
instead!

If you had been there, you could have yelled it out and saved me some major
embarassment! :)
Derek
PS The mention of "Stay Loose" leads to another great line (IMO):
"To be insane beyond belief,
Is sometimes the best relief."

Hey,

I surely would have helped you out with the line. Its one of those songs that
just puts me in a great mood and I sing when I am working, driving, or
whatever.

I am one of those guys who owns two guitars (Yamahas) and after owning the
second one finally realized I can't play and never will. I appreciate anyone
who can play even if they forget a line or two. Hey, Gord usually drops the
pick one or twice during the concerts I've seen. Has anyone else noted that?

From Don Quixote:
"See the soldier with his gun, who must be dead to be admired"

Makes me think of Kipling and Tommy

For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Chuck him out, the brute!"
But it's "Saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot;

FYI, "Tommy Atkins" is the generic name used for a British soldier.

I posted a few of my favourite lines earlier in this thread. yesterday
was Gordon's birthday and as a tribute I sat around all afternoon
playing some of my favourite GL CD's and vinyl. While I was thumbing
through the LP's I came across The Ballad Of The Yarmouth Castle on a
"Best of". I had forgotten how powerful and evocative that song is. IMHO
it is better than "The Wreck"

Oh Lord," she groans, "I'm burning!"
"Let someone understand"
But her silent plea is wasted
In the playing of the band.......

......Then a voice says
"Shut up and deal, I'm losing"

"God help the ones who sleep below
And cannot find their way
Thank God for those we've rescued
Upon this awful day"

Is she crying for the ones who lie
Within her molten sides
Or crying for herself, I'm a-wondering

Like a toy ship on a millpond
She burned all through the night
Then slipped beneath the waves in the morning

Powerful stuff
Sends shivers up and down my spine

Warmest Regards Peter T.

And you know what? If it wasn't, it SHOULD be!

But, I'm with Cathy, I've ALWAYS, for like 30 years, heard it as the
potato song.

Of course, my opinion is greatly suspect. Even to me!

Club? Oh, you mean her D18GL she was going to swat me with? I think she
finally realized beating my brains out wasn't worth the damage to the guitar!

Hi, everyone. I don't know if this song was even mentioned in the thread (too many messages
to sift through right now :), but how about...

...so if you think you've no regrets, come have your fortune read.
The Gypsy

I must agree with everyone who's said it, though. I may not be in the mood to hear a
particular GL song, but as soon as one starts, I have real problems fast forwarding
through it, even on CD. :) Too many great tunes, and great lyrics, to pass them by.

Except for Something Very Special, though. Great song, but complete torture trying
to listen to it through earphones. :D

Well it looks as though this fantastic thread has it appears now come
to a close and it might well be a record. Google groups currently lists a
total of 92 postings but that excludes 2 more that you can see if you read
the newsgroup through Outlook Express the missing two are my original post
on November 13th although Char's affirmative response fortuneately quoted
my posting in its entirety. The other was a short posting on Nov16th by
isr...@webtv.net which was in fact quoted from in subsequent postings
by both Debby de Shazo and Jen (phinzz) very strange.
So this new posting from me is to confirm that I
have completed the lengthy task of compliling a digest of all postings for
which I undertook for two reasons:-
1. So that Char can hopefully print it out and pass it to a
deserving patient to help his recovery and show him how deeply appreciated
his songwriting abilities are hint hint we want more!! and
2. I thought that having compiled the Word document version I would then
simply save it as a web page ready to upload to my web site and add a link
from my Lightfoot webring ringmasters page for everybody's future
enjoyment.
In doing the compilation I also realised that there were a further 16
postings on
another thread "favo(u)rite Lines" where a total of 11 recent postings were
added to an older thread of that subject already 5 postings long if these 11
had been added instead to the"favorite lightfoot songs and favorite lines"
thread then it would have been a total of 92 plus 11 plus the 2 omitted
plus this posting
equals 106 surely a new record for alt.music.lightfoot?? And all with no
postings at all from the
3 main site owners Val, Wayne and Florian nor other stalwarts such as
Andy, Erica, David Sims, Rik Stevens Sean Gaynor orLynn Oatman
(using any of her aliases!!) to name but a few.
The biggest problem I faced in the compilation was the fact that Google
groups seems to list a thread in posting order followed by any associated
responses not chronologically so I have endeavoured to number my listing the
same way. I have tried to tidy the presentation up a bit too mainly by
putting all the song titles in bold italics and putting posting date and
poster at the top of each entry. As soon as I have posted this I will add a
link to the new page on my site on my ringmasters page. Finally I have
realised that since my original posting a few of my own quoted lines are
duplicates of others submissions. Also as no doubt we all have have since
thought of a few more favo(u)rites to add. The list below will
therefore replace the original that Google has mislaid

Here are my fourpennyworth not in any particular order
but first the rhyming

from Lazy Mornin'
keeping up with the Joneses
I hope no one telephones us

The Mountains and Maryann
There's a semi up the road ahead, I'll take him in my time

Go Go Round
He's playing up in Michigan in a group they call The Intended
With a kiss and a promise he was gone, the song was ended

and the first two Lightfoot recordings I ever heard in 1966

Spin Spin
which has my wife's favo(u)rite lines
In the web of wild desire,
And I cannot control the fire!

and although not one of Gords songs but it could have been
The First time Ever I Saw Your Face
The first time ever I lay with you
And felt you heart beat close to mine
I thought our joy would fill the earth

Pussywillows Cat-tails
the entire song really but in particular the sounds of
Shivering, quivering, the warm breath of spring
Voicing, rejoicing, the wine cups do bring
Reveling, disheveling, the summer nights can bring
Harsh nights and candlelights, woodfires a-blazin'

Affair On 8th Avenue
Her long flowing hair came softly undone
And it lay all around

A Lesson in Love

First to come are the midgets, a monkey and a kid
Followed by those two one-armed jugglers, the ego and the id
always reminds me of the great "devil" books by the great
English novellist Denis Wheatley he wrote very imaginatively
of the travels of one's id outside one's body/mind

Softly
Down the darkened hall
I hear her footsteps on my stair
And she is in my arms once more

Sit Down Young Stranger
How can you find your fortune when you cannot find yourself

He came down through fields of green
On the Summer Side of Life

10 Degrees and Getting Colder
He was raised up in Milwaukee, though he never was that famous

But the creatures of evil have captured her heart
And that Same Old Obsession still keeps us apart

Seven Island Suite
Fortune will not find you in your mansion or your truck
Brothers will desert you when you're down and shit out of luck

In My Fashion
As an Engineer I have always been fond of
And he couldn't come to terms with a slide rule

I'll Prove My Love
Any way I stub my toe

the Favo(ur)ite Gord song of my friend Thea Woodbury in England

In the name of love she came
This foolish winsome girl
She was all decked out like a Rainbow Trout
Swimmin' upstream in the world
And she said "Please, please, I've lost my way
The current is too strong
And she gave one flip of the rainbow tip of her tail
And she swam back down

and of course being married to The Susan
although not one of Gords songs but it could have been
Like crippled ships that made it
Through a storm and finally reached a quiet shore
The homeless found a home on Susan's Floor

Apology
Then I remembered everything
I've learned about survival
Havin' walked with fools and kings
I've even read the Bible

I remember all those lines
Givin' me direction
Gather not your gold on earth
It will not pass inspection

Walls

I'm not ashamed of wearing out my old gray socks
Chasing you around the back woods
I'm not ashamed to darn, nor to proud to find some yarn
To sew them up once again
Now that's what socks are for

Am I the only one to always get a mental picture of throwing dirty socks
against a rough-finished wall and seeing them stick there!!

And finally of course the song that featured in our wedding in 2000

Whisper My Name

I will build a home for you
To keep you warm each winter
Lemon lilies at your door
To give you in September

Cheers

John, allow me to wax philosophical here for a second by saying that this
thread is never really over. Every time somebody on here discusses a
song, complete or in part, it's really just another version of what we've
all done here. Like several people have said, Gord's music in all its
forms can be examined and reexamined, and every song contains some lyric
that attracts a part of you.

Mind you, I'm paraphrasing. :)

Oh, and just to stay on topic, here's a few more clips I don't recall
seeing in the thread.

...and if you've got the money you can get yourself a honey
with a written guarantee to make you smile.

Alberta Bound (now don't *that* inspire some images in yer head?)

It was out in Arizona when he heard the lady listenin'
to each word that he was sayin', to each line that he would write...

10 Degrees and Getting Colder (it took me five or six plays of this before
I realized what Gord had said here, and it's freaked me out ever since)

The patriot's dream is as old as the sky.
It lives in the lust of a cold, callous lie...

The Patriot's Dream (there are a couple of neat lines in this song, and I
think this set really drives home the point Gord was trying to make)

...but when you are a trucker, you'll come to realize
the only thing a man can do is watch the world roll by...

Long Thin Dawn (among my very favorites of Gord's tunes. It's amazing how
much you can tell about a person, real or fictional, in a single
sentence. That's how good Gord is; a man's entire philosophy, summed up
in one short paragraph.)

Just think about the fool who by his virtue can be found
in a most unusual situation, playing jester to the clown.

Race Among the Ruins (you don't have to interpret anything to appreciate
how cool this clip sounds)

Anyway, this is a fantastic thread. Keep up the great work, everyone!
