That was my thought too Char, there are just so many great lines. I thought of

On a serious note, yeah, yeah, I know, "What? Ed? Being serious?!!!"
Being dead as dead could be would not be so bad if it were with a group
of people such as you, and certainly not if it were with friends who
played the songs so well, and played them so faithfully.
Isn't that what it's all about? Finding a place in the world where we
can all say, honestly, that we're happy to be there, happy to be
ensconsed in a place where the music flows, everyone we meet is nice,
and no one can bitch about anything? Oh, and everyone "gets" the
lyrics? Yeah. Is there nothing so sweet as having someone you care
about looking in your eyes over a particular verse and you both just
"get it?" No more words spoken, nothing left to be said, you just both
get it.
Oh, listen, I went on an on and then I decided to spare you. And, as
Bugs Bunny used to say: That's all, Doc!
So, listen, find the words, find the lyrics and tunes, find whatever it
is that lets you be happy. Find it. Grab it. Go with it. Run with

John, I can't resist jumping in here and saying I sure wish you were here in
Palo Alto tonight! I went to a twice-monthly open-mic downtown this evening,
and thought it would be fun to do "Drifters." So I started it out--a song I've
played many, many times--and suddenly drew a complete blank on the first line!
At least I provided some comedic relief when I said (while still strumming),
"This is a great song...and it's too bad I can't remember the first line...so
here's another Lightfoot song called 'Stay Loose,'" and I played that one
instead!
If you had been there, you could have yelled it out and saved me some major
embarassment! :)

I surely would have helped you out with the line. Its one of those songs that
just puts me in a great mood and I sing when I am working, driving, or
whatever.
I am one of those guys who owns two guitars (Yamahas) and after owning the
second one finally realized I can't play and never will. I appreciate anyone
who can play even if they forget a line or two. Hey, Gord usually drops the
pick one or twice during the concerts I've seen. Has anyone else noted that?

I must agree with everyone who's said it, though. I may not be in the mood to hear a
particular GL song, but as soon as one starts, I have real problems fast forwarding
through it, even on CD. :) Too many great tunes, and great lyrics, to pass them by.
Except for Something Very Special, though. Great song, but complete torture trying

have completed the lengthy task of compliling a digest of all postings for
which I undertook for two reasons:-
1. So that Char can hopefully print it out and pass it to a
deserving patient to help his recovery and show him how deeply appreciated
his songwriting abilities are hint hint we want more!! and
2. I thought that having compiled the Word document version I would then
simply save it as a web page ready to upload to my web site and add a link
from my Lightfoot webring ringmasters page for everybody's future
enjoyment.
In doing the compilation I also realised that there were a further 16
postings on
another thread "favo(u)rite Lines" where a total of 11 recent postings were
added to an older thread of that subject already 5 postings long if these 11
had been added instead to the"favorite lightfoot songs and favorite lines"
thread then it would have been a total of 92 plus 11 plus the 2 omitted
plus this posting
equals 106 surely a new record for alt.music.lightfoot?? And all with no
postings at all from the
3 main site owners Val, Wayne and Florian nor other stalwarts such as
Andy, Erica, David Sims, Rik Stevens Sean Gaynor orLynn Oatman
(using any of her aliases!!) to name but a few.
The biggest problem I faced in the compilation was the fact that Google
groups seems to list a thread in posting order followed by any associated
responses not chronologically so I have endeavoured to number my listing the
same way. I have tried to tidy the presentation up a bit too mainly by
putting all the song titles in bold italics and putting posting date and
poster at the top of each entry. As soon as I have posted this I will add a
link to the new page on my site on my ringmasters page. Finally I have
realised that since my original posting a few of my own quoted lines are
duplicates of others submissions. Also as no doubt we all have have since
thought of a few more favo(u)rites to add. The list below will
therefore replace the original that Google has mislaid

thread is never really over. Every time somebody on here discusses a
song, complete or in part, it's really just another version of what we've
all done here. Like several people have said, Gord's music in all its
forms can be examined and reexamined, and every song contains some lyric
that attracts a part of you.
Mind you, I'm paraphrasing. :)
