“In cyberspace, anything can happen.†So said Nick
Cannon in his introduction of the Youtube Special, along with a nod to
Justin Beiber, who began on Youtube and has since blossomed to such
popularity that he may have become overexposed before his career could
even begin.
Whether or not these truly were the best of the Youtube auditions is
debatable, however. With only one exception, all of the acts were chosen
by the judges.
Even had Cannon not announced it, it would have been easy to tell which
was the one act chosen by the voters. It was the one act that might
actually be a serious contender.
This segment “feels like the weirdest thing I’ve ever
been involved with,†said Piers Morgan. “We’ve
never seen these acts.â€
“I’m excited, and a bit terrified,†said Sharon
Osbourne, “because this is their first audition.â€
“And they’ve agreed to audition to the whole of
America.â€
The results were mixed. There was only one failed act and no panic
attacks (at least not by the performers), but the results of round will
be difficult to judge because, with only one (very big) exception, none
of these acts would have looked like serious contenders against any of
the other acts that have already made it into the semifinals.
The twelve Youtube finalists are:
1) PLUtonic (no Xs)
PLUtonic is an a capella group consisting of mostly college students and
self-confessed geeks. At first glance, they looked very traditional,
like refugees from NBC’s The Sing-Off. Then the conductor turned
around and started singing, and one performer began beat-boxing.
The group was decent, but better a capella groups have performed and
been eliminated in the first round in seasons past. It may not have
helped either that the group decided to ham it up with dancing, booty
slap and all. Morgan likened it to “being hammered over the head
with a slab of cheddar,†though did confess that he quite liked
it.
Osbourne, simply stated “I hate a capella groups,†which
says nothing of her opinion of their talent. Mandel was not much more
helpful with his criticism.
Were PLUtonic an original Top 48 act, they likely would have been
regulated to seat filler status along with NU Covenant. Against many of
the following acts, however, they do have a chance.
2) Dylan Plummer (no Xs)
One of many firsts for AGT at the Youtube Special, Dylan Plummer
auditioned as an acrobatic jump roper. Despite reportedly hurting his
leg during a rehearsal in which Plummer was attempting advanced tricks,
his performance went off without a hitch.
The problem, however, is that it didn’t translate very well onto
the TV screen. Plummer performed with bright red ropes that blurred and
blended in with the background, prohibiting the audience at home from
getting a true sense of his talent (he may want to consider a solid
black backdrop if he has the chance to perform again).
Mandel did notice from his front row seat that Plummer “had a
couple of misses there.†He then went on to stress his belief
that Plummer would be great with time but was not ready yet. “I
see a future in an act like this.â€
Morgan, meanwhile, was “pleasantly surprised,†stating
that he had expected the act based on its description to be pretty bad
and was ready to X him. Plummer’s act is very much
unconventional, but the potential is definitely there.
3) Pup (X from Morgan)
You can’t possibly make up something as stupid as this. Pup the
dog (with Owner, his owner) was an accordion-playing dog.
At least that’s what the act was supposed to be. The dog
“plays†the accordion by pulling on a rope toy, the
other end of which was tied to the accordion. In other words, Pup is not
actually a trained dog. Instead, much like Tony Hoard & Rory before
them, Pup is a dog whose owner has manipulated his natural canine
behavior into the shallow resemblance of an act.
The truly sad thing is that Pup didn’t even do that. He took one
tug at the accordion, then just stood there looking around at the
audience for the remainder of the ninety seconds.
This was a complete disaster – a failed act in every sense of
the word. That it received only one X is nothing short of an atrocity.
Not surprisingly, when I attempted to look for a website for Pup, all I
found was this link to Vote For The Worst advocating all of their
visitors to vote for him.
Howie Mandel even gave Pup a standing ovation. That’s when you
know it’s bad.
4) Cam Hodges (no Xs)
As if America’s Got Talent need more young male singer /
guitarists. Hodges was not necessarily bad, but when you fret in your
opening video that you’ve “got to remember the
words,†that doesn’t exactly speak wonders of your
capacity to compete with the likes of Nathaniel Kenyon, Taylor Mathews
or Michael Grimm.
In the beginning, Hodges sounded like a train wreck in the making. His
guitar sounded very much out of tune and he sang far too low to be
audible. He did, however, get more comfortable as the performance
progressed and adjusted both his guitar and vocals in time to avoid an
X.
All the judges seemed to agree that the performance was far from
perfect, but that he did indeed have potential to be better. With three
very similar acts already in the semifinals, however, you’ve got
to wonder if just having the potential to be good is good enough.
5) Ryan Rodriguez (X from Morgan)
Rodriguez’s Youtube video (which was submitted by his wife)
showed him doing a lot of outdoor dancing more akin to parkour, which
was never really suitable for the AGT stage in the first place. Morgan
described his act in the opening video as “kind of
chaotic,†but “kind of exciting.â€
The performance, however, was actually pretty boring. The dancing was
nihilistic, but “a little bit safe,†in Morgan’s
own words. Rodriguez also wasted time by climbing up a ladder and
swinging on a rope, which ultimately did nothing to add any flavor to
his dance routine.
“What you need is a group of other people,†said
Osbourne. Mandel, meanwhile, once again expressed confusion as to what
exactly Rodriguez was supposed to be.
Mandel’s obsession with classification is aggravating, but in
this case, he’s got a point. Rodriguez’s performance was
more like an audition to become a stuntman than an actual act.
6) Austin Anderson (X from Morgan)
Before he began, Howie Mandel stated that there had been only one
comedian in the Top 48 (Doogie Horner) who did not make it through,
therefore Anderson had his work cut out for him.
Instead, Anderson made Horner look good by comparison. Morgan buzzed him
right after his first joke – a very tasteless, very offensive
joke about updating Facebook while driving, where the punch line was him
not knowing if he was running over potholes or people.
Even Mandel had to confess that “it was kind of
mediocre,†referring to the feeling he was getting from the
audience.
As if his material was not offensive enough, Anderson then tried to
roast Morgan, but could come up with nothing better than to call him a
party pooper.
To which Morgan responded: “You pooped on your own
party.â€
Finally, as Cannon was reciting off Anderson’s voting
information, Anderson took off his shirt to show up his abs. There
really are not sufficient words enough to describe just how thoroughly
despicable Anderson made himself out to be. Almost as bad as Howie.
7) Booker Forte (X from Morgan)
Another dancer with equally unimpressive results. Booker Forte had
energy and technique reminiscent of Haspop, but absolutely none of the
inspiration. While he was talented, his performance was a complete
extract – a mimic of other performers. With nothing new or
original, the performance dragged on forever.
Morgan lectured Forte for staying “in a very tight
area,†and for playing it safe. Osbourne commented that she had
seen all of his moves before – there was nothing unique or
original about him. Mandel even mentioned Haspop by name.
Forte was talented, but there is no question that if the two came to
spars in the semifinals, Haspop would mop the floor with him.
8) Pizza Patt (X from Morgan)
Once again, this is too stupid to be fictional: the judges actually
chose a pizza chef to compete in the Youtube Special.
“Pizza Patt is what Youtube is all about,†said
Osbourne. Morgan, on the other hand, said “Pizza Patt
shouldn’t be here. He chucks pizza in the air. It is utterly
ludicrous.â€
I’m with Morgan on this one. In response to Morgan’s
criticism, Patt threw out a claim of being able to juggle three pizzas
at once but that he was “saving it for next time.â€
To which Morgan responded: “What next time?â€
Mandel (in a rare display of intelligence) also questioned the
appropriateness of the act, stating that “We do see this all the
time in the windows of pizzerias, everywhere.â€
This is why it’s not a good idea to joke about your job. Maybe
the idea of putting a pizza chef live on a stage seemed funny, but to
actually do so was a complete waste of time.
9) Kristina Young (singer) (no Xs)
Like many singers this season, Young has potential, but may never get
the chance to fully demonstrate it. In the very beginning, Young
actually sounded more like she was trying to parody the song. Like
Hodges, however, she gained confidence in time for the chorus, though
was unmistakably unsteady during a lift from her backup dancers. If she
comes back, she should consider performing solo – no dancers,
props, or anything else that could interfere with her singing.
Morgan expressed his belief that, compared to the other singers already
in the semifinals, Young was not good enough to win, but did complement
that her performance was “pretty exceptional given where
you’ve come from,†referencing the fact that, unlike the
original Top 48 picks, the Youtube acts have absolutely no stage
experience whatsoever. Osbourne’s comments were very similar;
she stated that the song choice was not right for her, but complimented
her for being as strong as she was without being able to progress from
the open calls as the others had.
Young does indeed have potential, and with many of her rival Youtube
acts failing to live up to their potential, she may yet have a chance to
adapt and improve as the others have.
10) Maestro Alexander Bui (X from Osbourne)
No, that’s not a typo. For the first time ever, Sharon Osbourne
buzzed an act that Piers Morgan had not.
Bui is indeed a very talented pianist – that is hardly an issue.
The problem, however, may be that Bui was focused more on making that
obvious than he was of actually entertaining. His song choice was very
technical, but not particularly entertaining. Instead of performing a
moving or exciting piece, Bui apparently chose to show off.
“It was boring for me,†said Osbourne. She instead
recommended a “Classical pop†song should Bui come back
in the future.
Mandel and Morgan, however, disagreed, both commenting on his technical
ability and natural talent.
Bui is indeed talented, but I unfortunately must agree with Osbourne. If
people vote for Bui, it will be less for what he had done and more for
what he could do as a semifinalist. Bui has talent, but he picked a very
poor way to show it.
11) Dan Sperry (accidental X from Sharon + panic attack from Mandel)
If Dan Sperry goes through, it won’t be because he was
entertaining. It will be because Mandel has made no secret of the fact
that he’s the one responsible for all the bad acts this season,
and America wants revenge.
At first, Sperry looked like he would be a very exciting magician. He
began wearing a mask, which he took off and swapped with a dove even
before his backup music had kicked in. Sperry came off looking like a
very exciting “rapid fire†magician.
Then he went off stage and devoted the remainder of his ninety seconds
to one trick. He crushed up a mint lifesaver in his mouth, then ran a
thread of dental floss along his neck and snapped it under his chin,
spinning around which was another lifesaver.
Then he flicked his floss at Mandel, at which Mandel leaped out of his
chair, pushing Osbourne aside and causing her to hit her buzzer by
accident.
“You are hereby charged with the attempted murder of Howie
Mandel,†said Morgan, referencing a time at the open call when
Mandel had accused another act of trying to kill him. He then rose to
his feet and applauded Sperry for it.
Osbourne, meanwhile, was unavailable for comment because she was
laughing too hard.
12) Jackie Evancho (no Xs)
Needless to say, the ten-year-old opera singer was America’s
pick. After eleven acts ranging from disappointing to mediocre, the
Youtube Special finished by turning the competition on its head
completely with the introduction fo a frontrunner. At only ten years
old, Jackie Evancho has a voice that would put even Barbara Padilla
under pressure.
She received a standing ovation from all three judges. “I
can’t believe that’s from this tiny body – this
huge mature voice,†said Osbourne. “I’ve never
seen anything like it.â€
The only thing that could possibly keep Evancho from advancing into the
semifinals would be if the entire audience assumed she didn’t
need their vote. I would sooner expect to be struck by lightning twice
in a day than see that happen.

Ugh I just got home form work and sat down to watch my recording of AGT.
Lets just say I was skipping most of it. Ugh and whats get me the most
mad is the SUPER SPOILER Jackie Evancho, one she gets the kid spoiler
and two she has the people who voted for her on youtube. If there one
thing I hate is kid acts and the second thing I hate is singers with out
flare. So this act makes me want to DIE!!!! I'm calling it she is going
to win and another boring act wins. (excluding Terry Fator) I am calling
a singer sweep though I like PLUtonic. I'm tired and about to rage quite
AGT. The youtube auditions where a joke. If you are not willing to stand
in the lines and face the 1st round audience you have no right to be
here. These acts took the back ass way to get on the show and it could
end up spoiling the competition for good and interesting acts like
Murray, Michael Grimm Fighting Gravity, Prince Poppycock and Alice Tan
Ridley. The people who offer talent and the flare.

E-mail message
Three convicts were on the way to prison. They were each allowed to take
one item with them to help them occupy their time while incarcerated. On
the bus, one turned to another and said, "So, what did you bring?" The
second convict pulled out a box of paints and stated that he intended to
paint anything he could. He wanted to become the "Grandma Moses of
Jail".
Then he asked the first, "What did you bring?" The first convict pulled
out a deck of cards and said, "I brought cards. I can play poker,
solitaire, gin, and any number of games." The third convict was sitting
quietly aside, grinning to himself. The other two took notice and asked,
"Why are you so smug? What did you bring?"

you reveal it the magic is gone. Magic isn't meant to be scrutinized and
dissected after the fact. Any illusion can be figured out by doing this.
Magic is meant to be enjoyed at the moment it's being performed and
remembering what it is you SAW. It's meant to be a temporary suspension
of belief. We know there is no such thing as magic. It's fun
pretending though. Some people would rather not know.

They're both awesome. Its amazing how such a mature and lovely and such

before he got famous. I remember watching his shows when he was still in
school, before he moved to Las Vegas. He started performing
when he was really young for birthday parties and other events.
One of his first shows I saw, he was dressed up as a clown: big shoes,

to look down for the skin to "overcome" the string. Though I have no
idea about the ring or whatever it was. Probably just stuck somewhere
