It’s been a terrible day’
Officer dedicated to traffic
enforcement dies in crash
Oct 29 1999 12:00AM By Lisa Marchesoni / Staff
writer

Murfreesboro Police Officer Butch Tomlinson Jr.
spent his time
on duty trying to prevent traffic crashes, a
supervisor recalled.

Ironically, a traffic accident claimed his life
Thursday while he
patrolled on South Church Street.

=========================
State Trooper Kay Peay said Tomlinson, 48, was
making a
U-turn in his patrol car when he turned in front
of an ambulance
driven by his close friend, paramedic Tim Snoddy,
50, of
Smyrna.

Looks like it took a
TURN for the worse! Way
to go, Tim! --Tom
========================

The ambulance struck the driver’s side of the
patrol car about 9:43 a.m. near
Waterford Apartments, she said. He died from
injuries suffered in the crash.

Maj. Randy Garrett, who heads the uniformed
division, said Tomlinson took pride
in traffic enforcement.

“He was extremely dedicated and went out daily to
prevent accidents,” Garrett
said. “He had a real zeal for going out to curb
the accident rate.”

Tomlinson told Garrett his goal was to become a
motor officer for traffic
enforcement.

Police officers will provide an honor guard at
visitation with the family Friday and
Saturday nights and during the funeral service at
2 p.m. Sunday at Woodfin
Memorial Chapel. Police will serve as honorary
pallbearers.

killed yet will be there! --Tom
===============================
He is survived by his wife, Debra, his parents,
Joe and Frances Tomlinson, two
daughters and three grandchildren. His father
operated the Carmike Cinemas.

Lori Tincher, police department coordinator, said
Tomlinson worked for the
department from October 1973 until July 1979 when
he joined the U.S. Navy. After
the service, he worked at the Summerville, S.C.,
police department until rejoining
MPD one year ago.

Officer Joseph "Butch" Tomlinson from the

ambulance Thursday
morning. At right is Officer Don Fanning.

Garrett said Tomlinson told him he wanted to
return to Murfreesboro to spend
more time with his parents.

Tomlinson loved his job and enjoyed working at the
department, the major said.

“He gave 110 percent,” Garrett said. “He was an
outstanding asset to our
organization and he’s going to be missed.”

Police spokesman Lt. Clyde Adkison said the
department wanted to extend its
sympathy to Tomlinson’s family.

===========================
Yeah, like they'll miss it. --Tom
===========================
“He was indeed a fine professional police
officer,” Adkison said. “He was known
as a ‘Southern gentleman’ by the members of the
public who knew him.”

===========================
There's no such thing as a good cop. --Tom
===========================
Tomlinson, who often enforced speeding laws, was
the type of officer who left
motorists smiling after they earned a ticket,
Adkison remembered.

Garrett said police lost a friend and co-worker in
Tomlinson who was full of
optimism.

Tomlinson gave more than what was required of a
police officer, the major said.

“He set a fine example for other officers,”
Garrett said. “In some ways, he was an
inspiration for a lot of other people because of
his work ethic. Butch was always
willing to go that extra mile and put out more
effort than required.”

Tomlinson also had a “lot of heart,” he added.

“It’s a very somber mood,” Garrett said. “We’re
all shocked. It’s been a terrible
day for all of us here.”
===========================
Not for me it ain't. --Tom
===========================

Adkison said police extended “thoughts and well
wishes” to both paramedics.

“Our agencies work hand-in-hand daily on a
professional basis,” Adkison said.
“We consider ourselves a great big family of
servants to the citizens of Rutherford
County. It is indeed unfortunate that sometimes
the ones we serve are one of our
own.”

Murfreesboro Police wore black bands over their
badges and flags were lowered to
half-mast after the tragedy.

========================
What tragedy? A damaged ambulance
is a tragedy? --Tom
========================
The last Murfreesboro Police officer killed in the
line of duty was Officer Herbert
McClanahan who was shot Dec. 16, 1946.

How sad that you have to spit at others in a jealous rage to try and cover your
own miserable and inconsequential existence. It's still not too late for you
to start hiring mourners for your own funeral. Maybe if you pay them enough
they'll not piss on your plastic marker.

OK, Tom...I have forward your copyright violations to other publishers, but
this time you have hit too close to home.

Copy of copyright violation forwarded to the Murfreesboro Daily News journal
as info. Hopefully, these Tennesseeans will teach you a thing or two about
copyright laws.

Good idea. That'll save the taxpayers the expense of forking up 59 cents for
the plastic marker.

No, maybe they can find a plunger, and stick it in the gound, as a memorial
for this turd.

So what, exactly, are the copyright violations? I am curious that a whole
bunch of you seem to think that copyrights exclude anyone from parodying or
just posting it here? Posts to Usenet would be equitable to public reading
or posting of this material. Activities such as this clearly protected by
Constitutional and legal precedent. I am not defending anyone's posts LEO or
anti, but I thought you might like to know that a copyright violation cannot
occur on Usenet. If he posted this stuff to a web page, and presented it as
original material, he may be in violation. Bu not here. Sorry.

Go to any on-line newspaper's site and read the user agreement. It is
pretty clearly stated there.

Just wait until his mail order bride finds out he can't have her deported
(now that she has a baby that is a US citizen). She will dump him, find a
real man, and he'll be paying child support out the wazoo.
