newby needs help starting irc chat

I discovered irc chat using Emule and want to now use an irc client,
preferably free. I have installed "trillian" but no matter how I try I
have no idea what to do. Is this the place to help me or can anyone
recommend a site to go to.

stable, supported client), but there are others which are also quite
good. The two you should probably check out first are linked to

I would recommend www.irchelp.org as a useful start point. I'm not
familiar with Trillian as a client, but the site also includes a number of
alternatives if you can't get that working.

Thank you both, the links are just the kind of thing I needed, I will
look at them soon. Searching for irc I found to be somewhat unproductive
and free irc clients appear to be few and far between.

High. I've been to the links, recomendation are mirc, pay for and xchat
not recomended for win 98.
Any other ideas for free irc clients

I've never used Trillian, but the commands are pretty universal.

/server the.network.ip.hostname.here

To join a chat

/join #chatzone (#chatzone exists almost anywhere)

www.irchelp.org has links to clients and whatnot. It also has a directory
of IRC networks.

I hate to plug non-free software, but mIRC is by far the easiest IRC
client I can think of for Windows users, and it's also the standard:

www.mirc.co.uk
