Trillian is not very stable as an IRC client (and not all that great
in general, either). Most Windows users seem to prefer mIRC (a very
stable, supported client), but there are others which are also quite
good. The two you should probably check out first are linked to
below.

www.xchat.org (Be sure to get the Windows version, unless you're going
to be running it under another OS.)

I would recommend www.irchelp.org as a useful start point. I'm not
familiar with Trillian as a client, but the site also includes a number of
alternatives if you can't get that working.

Just use mIRC. After 30 days, it makes you click once to start the
program; just a simple nag.

www.irchelp.org has links to clients and whatnot. It also has a directory
of IRC networks.
