This newsgroup has become a cesspool filled with
hatred and moronic racism. The trolls appear to have spewed their
disgusting crap all over the place.

Transforming good and beneficial things into vile and hate filled things
seems to be the agenda. Very sad.....

It's so tragic that everyone doesn't meet your high standards. I learned long ago that the world is full of people who have different opinions and patterns of behavior. I decided to simply hate everyone equally until they gave me a reason not to. My strategy has worked as evidenced by the fact that I've never killed anyone or gone to prison for choking the crap out of anybody. ^_^

You apparently missed my entire point. These newsgroups were set up to
exchange topic-related relevant information and instead are being filled
with racist rants and slurs. If you aren't in any way offended by what
is going on here, good for you. I am not offering a moral high ground,
rather, an appeal to not feed the trolls who are transforming this and
other newsgroups into a smelly toilet.

Newsgroups (esp the alt hierarchy) are typically unmoderated. No
"newsgroup police" to enforce any particular set of "rules". Your
participation is voluntary -- no one is forcing you to read them.
Also, it's a "pull" technology; you incur very little cost for
posts that you CHOOSE NOT TO VIEW.

Learn to use a kill file and/or exercise self-discipline.

If these are beyond your abilities, I suggest you subscribe
to any "home repair forum" (google should turn up more hits than
you have time to explore!). There, comments tend to be policed
either by moderators or other forum participants. You can probably
maintain your anonymity in most of them, as well!

(though you will find they "cost" more to view as you end up
pulling down large *pages* of "conversations" instead of individual
"messages"; you may also have to tolerate some bit of advertising
or UCE)

Bless your pea picken heart. ALT newsgroups are specifically intended
to be anarchist in nature, not some left wing liberal socialist group.
Does your mother give good head? Take your ass to a moderated group

been on alt groups forever and will always be here, use your brain, if
you have one.

This has been in the making for at least 10 years. Alt building
construction & Alt HVAC used to be good ones too. When the founder Paul
of HVAC left, he seen it coming for years.

Usually I use this group for obituaries. Someone usually reports some
old timer kicking.

The Garden Web has good home forums. It's moderated, so too much shit
doesn't hang around long before it gets flushed and the ISP gets banned.
But then again since it got bought by Houzz it's going downhill.

I've always considered the newsgroup to be analogous to the discussion you might come across between a bunch of guys at a supply house or hardware store. The rest of the guys will tell the most unpleasant individuals to STFU and get lost. There is no way to killfile anyone when you're using Google Groups. You can only flag a post as abusive. ^__^

I worked at the parts department counter at a local electronics supply
house. I often wind up at automotive, plumbing, and counters at local
HVAC and electrical supply distributors. I can say very confidently that
groups or individuals who came in reciting poems about niggers, making
juvenile references to their dicks, asking an adult about blow jobs,
etc. would be the ones to be told to STFU and leave. I can killifile
these dumb and pathetic morons and ignore them. But the smell of shit on
this newsgroup just keeps getting worse. And clearly a few of you like
it that way,

That is an interesting comparison. As a child, I used to learn a lot
at those kinds of places. I imagine the individuals or groups you
refer to would censor their stories when they saw a child was present,
but those who didn't were told to STFU as you say. In either case, it
was educational to hear the on-topic discussions as well as how the
good guys reacted to the inappropriate individuals. Now, compare that
to this newsgroup. Would you bring your child to a place like this?
Or, recommend they ask questions here to help them learn? Years ago,
I would have said yes, but not with the current situation. Sad.

Would you let your child watch OTA TV? CATV? Listen to "pop" music?
Read "popular" magazines? Graphic novels? And, what about the
*classics*? (Oedipus? OhMiGod!!) etc.

Chances are, you would have very little choice in those matters.
You would try to FILTER whatever you could. But, more importantly,
you would EDUCATE your child to be able to recognize what is "right"
and "wrong" for themselves! Hiding these things from them does them
a disservice (what happens when mommy and daddy aren't around to shield
them from The Big Bad World?)

I grew up in a very blue collar community. Multiple ethnicities.
"Ethnic jokes" were commonplace (irish, polish, italian, black,
spanish, jewish, etc.). Chances are, the guy who was TELLING the
joke was of the ethnicity belittled *by* the joke!

Yet, it was clear from even a very young age that these were JOKES
playing on stereotypes and stereotypes were distortions of reality,
not *fact*. No one was foolish enough to suggest that the attributes
exploited in the jokes applied to "real people" -- especially evident
when you *knew* those "real people" first hand!

If you (and the OP) are entitled to an opinion, then surely *they*

include nor exclude myself from that grouping]

I've never understood the whining that people engage in re: this
sort of issue. If you don't like what is being said, THEN DON'T READ
IT! Instead, the push is to CENSOR other folks' speech.

It doesn't take much effort to sort out the posts you can safely ignore
(because the individuals engage in discourse that you find unappealing).
If you don't want to be exposed to "sin", live in a monastery (I guess
novitiates fondling each other isn't considered "sin" :> ).

Personally, I have software that examines message content and just elides
messages that it "knows" I don't want to bother reading. It also
"learns" which posts (individuals) I "avoid" and, over time, filters
those out so I'm not inconvenienced by their presence. I.e., *it*
does the "remembering" *for* me!

But, for a group with this little traffic, you should be able to mentally
track who to read and who to pass by...

I don't killfile anyone, even when I have a newsreader that has that capability. I like to watch the patterns of troll behavior to guess when a certain troll will tire of being ignored. I have responded to a few just to see if they have any imagination but they all seem to be little more than sophomoric cretins not worth my time. A really good troll with imagination can be a lot of fun but those I've seen lately are dull, repetitive and not very entertaining at all. Dammit! Where did all the good trolls go?! o_O

I guess people used to pay tons of money so they could sit in
front at Vegas clubs where Don Rickles could see and insult them.
Then there was Dave Chappelle who played a black Klansman on his TV show.
Either would make a good troll.

When I was a kid, the whole family gathered around the black and white TV to watch the Red Skelton show. He was able to entertain both the young and the old. I found a listing of some of the others we watched as a family. This was back when a wealthy family had two television sets. My family was lucky to have one B&W TV. ^__^

Paul was a major contributor to the destruction of alt.hvac, by
turning it into a clique where only he and his toadies were allowed to
post without suffering constant harassment. They drove everybody else
away, and eventually, when only a handful of regulars were left, Paul

Sorry you apparently can't see the meaning behind the initial *few* words
that necessitated the followup words!

Restating my initial comment re: your objection to those who weren't
"in total sympathy" with the OP's comment:

I guess *they* aren't entitled to an opinion? Or, by your reasoning,
is the OP *also* an A-hole?

Which I later expanded upon:

Yet, you indicted those "others" who voiced THEIR opinions to
the contrary of the OP -- labeling them A-holes in the process.

If you (and the OP) are entitled to an opinion, then surely *they*
are, as well!?

And offered the SIMPLE ADVICE to folks who don't like what they read
(in a forum that has no enforced rules and VOLUNTARY participation):

I've never understood the whining that people engage in re: this

Wordy? Pompous? Tedious??
