Ruth Bader Ginsburg Treated For Pancreatic Cancer

Fri, 08/23/2019 - 14:40

Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the 86-year-old Supreme Court Justice, has been
treated for a tumor on her pancreas, according to media reports.

The long-time SCOTUS member completed a three-week course of
stereotactic ablative radiation therapy at Sloan Kettering in NYC on
Friday.

The focused radiation treatment began on Aug. 5 and was administered on
an outpatient basis, according to a statement from SCOTUS. The tumor was
first detected after a routine blood test in early July, and a biopsy
performed on July 31 at Sloan Kettering confirmed the tumor was
malignant.

As part of her treatment, a bile duct slant was placed.

The Justice tolerated treatment well. She canceled her annual summer
trip to Santa Fe, but has otherwise maintained an active schedule. The
tumor was treated definitively and there is no evidence of disease
elsewhere in the body. Justice Ginsburg will continue to have periodic
blood tests and scans. No further treatment is needed at this time.

This isn't Ginsburg's first brush with cancer: She was treated for early
stage pancreatic cancer in 2009, per WaPo.

Before that, she was treated, and beat, colon cancer.

But instead of retiring, Ginsburg has opted to stay on at the Supreme
Court, perhaps because of how Mitch McConnell handled the nomination of
Merrick Garland.

* * *

When President Trump won the 2016 GOP presidential nomination, he did so
under a tacit agreement: Should he win the presidency, he would appoint
as many conservative judges and SCOTUS justices as possible. And with
the GOP firmly in control of the Senate, there wouldn't be much to stand
in his way.

The arrangement has been incredibly successful so far: Trump has
appointed two new conservative justices, as well as dozens of
conservative judges. Now, American conservatives must double-down on
their support for Trump (which shouldn't be hard given his massive
popularity among Republicans) or risk losing a Supreme Court seat.

The circus will be something to behold!

I do not mean towards RBG. Pancreatic Cancer has a very,
very low success rate for treatment.

I do which for her own pride that she would just step down
rather than dying in her seat to try to out last Trump.
And spend her final days surrounded by loving family.

She might be OK. Problem with pancreatic cancer is that it is often not
detected until advanced stage. I think hers was spotted early.

I had a friend that lasted about five years but my sister in law only
lasted 6 months.

Sure sounds like you want her to go quickly, just like many conservatives
did ten years ago, the last time she had pancreatic cancer. She's already
outlived many of them. It is kind of interesting to watch how this
gets reported. Back in December it was lung cancer, reported as just
that, no other cancer anywhere, cut it all out. Now it's this, same thing,
"definitively treated", whatever that means. No sign of cancer anywhere else...
She's already missed some court time back in January. They also did not
say anything about what specific kind of cancer it was, ie recurrence of
the pancreatic from ten years ago, some new pancreatic, or the lung cancer
spreading. Which probably means that it's not good.

How this plays out, will indeed likely be a circus, just how big will
depend on the timing and if Trump loses the election. The question for
trumpets was asked by Clint Eastwood. How lucky do you feel? If you're
confident that Trump will be re-elected, I'd say ~95%+ odds that Trump will
get to replace her. If Trump loses, the odds are way lower, how low
is anyone's guess. Seems there is a good chance it could then play out
like Ted Kennedy, with her unable to do her job at some point, but refusing
to step down. I briefly thought about whether she could then be removed, but
that is the same process as impeaching a president, so that isn't happening.
I find these people interesting.

The time for considering your mortality, spending more time with family,
doing things you still want to do and preserving your legacy by putting
someone with similar views on the court would have been in Obama's
second term. Seems selfish and nuts to me, at that age and especially with
that medical history, to want to hang on and take chances, but here we are.
So, seems like Ginsburg made her "how lucky do you feel" choice about 4 years
ago. And now the poor libs are left with the consequences, biting their
nails. If she does leave the court and Trump picks a replacement, it
will certainly be a big addition to the positive side of the balance of
what conservatives got from the orange clown debacle.

Did the one that lasted 5 years already have pancreatic cancer ten years
earlier and lung cancer 8 months earlier and were they 86? Just saying....

I don't wish bad health or death on anyone.

The democrats will probably imbomb her, stick her in a chair and wait
on the next election or two. I don't care what party is in office, it
is time that the old fossels like her and others that get to be over 70
years old get out of office. That is especially for the appointed ones
, especially if appointed for life. With the elected ones, there is a
way by vote to replace them.

She should have left office when Obama was in office so a democrat could
take her place if that is what she is waiting on. I guess withth epoles
showing Clinton winning she thought she could hang on a few more years.

Having observed humanity for over 70 years, I've concluded that 70 year
old assholes were probably assholes when they were 7.

I give you Ocasio-Cortez, she of 29 years. I doubt she's going to
improve in the next 40.

That would eliminate about half of congress and most of the appointed
officials

I doubt that AOC is an asshole. She is just stupid or nuts in the head
or something.

Wha worries me even more is the people that voted for her in the first
place.

When Carter was in office, he was a nice man, but jut not equipped to
handle the office of the President.

At least having a law that SC justices have to retire once they reach 80
wouldn't be a bad idea. It could save some future problems, where someone
is losing it, but won't quit.

I think she is both "stupid and nuts" and an "ass hole".

I think they were playing a joke on the rest of us. Let's what they
do the next election. The R's are running some great candidates
against her.

It took Obama to top him. At times Carter seems like he genuinely
is a nice man. Then he opens his mouth and Regressive nonsense comes
out. Maybe is has started getting old age mental loss?

I think as of late the greatest statesman ex-president had to be Nixon
(for all his faults)

you have to look at the gerrymandering in the NYC districts. The 7th got
the Puerto Ricans, the 12th got Trump, and the 14th got the scraps and
is about 50% Hispanic. The nicer parts are still Italian and Greek but
not enough to sway the vote.

The guy who invited the Chinese home for dinner? The guy whose
socialistic wage and price controls got dumped into Carter's lap? The
guy who bombed Cambodia right into Pol Pot's hands? His little CREEP
escapades were the lesser part of his evil.

He deserves the Oliver Cromwell treatment.

I was referring to his behavior after he left office.

Like hell he did. He just recognised that Mao was in fact
running things there. No point in pretending otherwise.

Even sillier than you usually managed and that’s saying something.

The bombing isnt what produced Pol Pot.

Interesting how you don't see those qualities in Trump. I disagee
with Ginsburg on her politics and many of her decisions, but I
don't think she's any of those things.

But he's been pretty much the same since he came to the national stage
in the 70s. What about all the nonsense, vile insults, racism, that
comes out of Trump's mouth? Has he insulted Europe and embarrassed
America again yet?

Figures you'd forget Reagan, who instead of trying to co-exist with the
Russians, brought down the evil empire. And people are rightly wondering
today if Nixon opening up the door with China was a good thing or bad
thing. China would have wound up developing, advancing anyway, but Nixon
probably gave them a good ten year or more head start.

So then, what great statesman accomplishments did Nixon have after leaving
office? Or do you really mean just good behavior? And wow, it's really
quite amazing to see the number one trumpet here talk about behavior of
presidents after leaving office when we have one right now that is a lying,
vile, narcissistic, mental POS while in office.
