ObRequest:
Heh, maybe given the low traffic I should find a different forum for
general developer chitchat...any suggestions? I like alt.hackers because
it wasn't dedicated to any particular techonolgy...
Anyway, I'm pretty handy with Java and Perl, and have some old VB
experience under my belt. I'd like to make some little file manipulations
app with a decent UI, like where I can drag and drop a set of files
configure some settings, and mess about with file names and what not.
Any suggestions on a technology for that? I've played some with
Perl/Tk...a little clunky though, and I think I'd have to play money for
something that would bundle it into a standalone app...plus, those apps
tend to be BIG for the little tasks I design them for.
Perl would be nice because it's so good at this file stuff...Java would be
ok. Does that get bundled into exe's relatively easily?
Any other suggestions? Something with a decent regex enging, ability to
drag and drop, maybe a nice "tree view" thing built in...

Yea, I know it's lame, but I had to put something, eh?

That page doesn't really say what it's all about...I can kind of get the
idea, but how it works...does it make a standalone exe? Is it just a UI
that can run file handling macros? Is kind of mysterious.
ObHack:
I used to use the "scratch pad" of my blog ( http://kisrael.com ) as a
place to jot URLs I want to get back to. I perl'd up a replacement
trivially simple UI system for my personal startpage,
http://alienbill.com/home/ --
has a link of the URL I paste in, it shows you the day I entered it as a
Tool tip, a delete button, and there's a small form for adding new URLs.
One slightly more hackish feature is if you add something that doesnt
start with "http", the link becomes a google search for those terms.
Not too hackish. But I'm amazed I had thought of it earlier...I've made
similar online bookmark systems, but they were meant to be more
comprehensive than this "quick reference"
