Anyway, I was hoping to hear from some users. How is its direct sound? Can I
bypass the CabTone so I can use an external cabinet emulator?
I currently use the PSA1 which is quite good, but I want to go with a tube
preamp.

I can tell you a quick story... first off, let me say that I'm also a
musician and a technical type.
I actually had dinner with the designer of the Voodoo Labs products...
he's a friend of a good friend of mine... we met last month at the Dayton
Ohio Hamvention.
Being a big time skeptic, I asked him to give me the basic difference in
some of their products vs all the others on the market.
I'm was impressed that he had enough inovations built into his products
that do qualify them as different.
They enjoy using original analog - descrete circuits and appear to be
thinking about the mindset of player. He's also a player...
I was impressed that he was willing to let enough of the "cat out of the
bag" during our talk. We went through a lot of the pedals they make, how
they differ from other products and the thought behind them.
In short, one of the Overdrive pedals they make is similar to a Tone
Screamer, but notice the "clarity" knob which provides a mix of the
original clean signal along with the overdrive. Also notice this knob
cleans up the boost as you increase the rotation.
I wouldn't think such a small addition to a TS-9 would do much, but it
does a lot to the dynamics of the circuit. So much so that some big name
players swear by it... check their ads for the list of endorcements.
He's a nice guy, voodoo seems to have their act straight and they work off
real ideas more than hype. I have no other relationship to their products
other than the above mentioned event.
I hope you receive other posts to your questions...
cheers

What's a "Tone Screamer"? The VooDoo Lab Sparkle Drive is based upon
the TS-808 circuit of the original Tube Screamer.

That would be the "clean" control, as there isn't a "clarity" knob on
the VooDoo Lab Sparkle Drive overdrive pedal.

It doesn't "clean up the boost" as it is increased, but, rather, is a
clean boost in and of itself.

Seems so.
What any of it has to do with the VooDoo Lab preamp, who knows...
:>In short, one of the Overdrive pedals they make is similar to a Tone
:>Screamer,

Tis true... after a certain amount of hype made over tube and tone
screamers, a typo slipped into the mix. Make that a tube screamer.

OK, another clean vs clarity knob label mess up. I have not seen the
sparkle drive myself... I'm just going on what the designer told me and
what stuck in my head after two glasses of cabernet. Darn red wine does
it to me every time.
But the designer used clarity in his description to me... pretty much,
the same function really...
:> Also notice this knob
:>cleans up the boost as you increase the rotation.

From what the designer told me, it is a remix of the original clean input
back at the output. As one rotates the knob, it the output goes from the
dirt channel back toward the clean channel. Kind of a neat idea...

Based on my conversation with the designer, VooDoo Lab products are not
just a knock-off or clone of other products. They seem to have their act
straight which means the preamp or most any product they make is pretty
well thought out and should be a nice item to have.
But your ears should be the real judge...

Immaculate.
I am moving in the near future.
Packing-up all my gear is going to be a real bear.
Shop equipment, 4 full stacks, additional amps, rack gear & 6 guitars. LOL!
Pardon me; 7-guitars.
Today I acquired an all original '71 Marshall 100w S/L & 25th Anniversary
4x12 slant cab.
A real buy I couldn't pass up.
It must be something in the water. LOL!
