Another author from the U.P. (went under the pen-name of Cully Gage) is Dr.
Charles Van Riper. He wrote a series of 8 "Northwoods Reader" books plus one
called "A Love Affair with the U.P." All are excellent books. The
"Northwood" set tells of growing up in a small, backwoods town in the U.P.
in the early 1900's where the main road into (and out of) town was a two
wheel wagon-rut.
If you want some fascinating, light-hearted reading, I would highly
recommend the "Northwood Reader" set. You won't be disappointed!!!

He may still be alive since he is not listed on The Dead Peoples

Another source http://www.best.com/~contento/s218.html also lists
Mr. Trout as still among the living.

Well, George Gipp.
The Olson brothers, who got their fifteen minutes in "Slap Shot".
More obscurely, Ishpeming's Flying Bietelas. And maybe even Coy Hill. I
think he jumped for the US Olympic Team decades ago. Must be in his
eighties now; used to hang out at Wawonowin CC in the summer.

Seborg did an exquisitely "film noir" style series of highschool chemistry
tutorials that I loved on first viewing (early '70s) and still recall fondly.
It was sort of in the production vein of "Night of the Living Dead".
Seriously, it was great stuff. He had an off-camera assistant named "Bean",
whom you never saw, that he would shout to with directions for this or that...
"More Juice, Bean!" Because of his stuttered delivery, we smart young 'uns
referred to him affectionately as "Glenn-Ah-T-Ah-Seborg". Never knew he was a
Yooper. Those films, and his life work, are amazing treasures.

But, the accomplishments of Dick Pole and Kevin Tapani are
really incredible when you consider the disadvantage yoopers
face in baseball with the long winters.
But, the UP does have wonderful youth baseball and high school
baseball programs.
Now any other famous yoopers? I guess I mean folks who can be
recognized nationally. They don't have to be generally famous,
but well known in their fields like Seborg.

Not sure about him, I can't remember 'that' far back....(;>)
He does have a lot of fans there though.
How about Percy Ross, the philanthropist.......from Laurium.
Football: Dick Berlinski of Quinnesec, my old roomie at MSU, punted for
the Spartans in the late 60s.
Coaches: HBO's Jerry Glanville was once an assistant at NMU. Chuck
Fairbanks coached football at Ishpeming before moving downstate to
Alpena and on to Nebraska. Stan Albeck coached basketball at NMU,
eventually ended up coaching the NBA Cleveland Cavaliers.
There is a UP Sports Hall Of Fame in Hedgecock Fieldhouse or Lakeview
Arena or the Dome at NMU. Maybe NMU should put it online. It would save
us some time, eh?
The late great NMU sportscaster Gil Heard once called it "Hedgefield
Cockhouse", and that's pretty much how I'll remember him.
Plus, I don't think you have the right band with "The Clash".
They are the London Punk rock band founded by four Englishment.

Jim Harrison is a world famous author and lives somewhere on Lac du

Would you guys grant honorary Yooper status to Ernest Hemingway?
Where is that documented?

What fisherman ever gave away the river he fished? Maybe he put
Seney in there to throw you off, thinking he really meant the Fox.
Or maybe it is a story, with the names and descriptions taken from
real places but assembled to best tell the story.
Like the stories based in Horton's Bay (on Lake Charlevoix, where
he did spend a lot of time), which are based on a combination of
real events and story telling to avoid lawsuits, like any writer
does that treads close to home.
