A friend was complaining bitterly about the dress code in her office.
She works for a CPA membership organization, and prefers BDUs and Docs
to skirts and close-toed heels. She's jealous because I work at an
advertising agency where they actually *want* the artists to look
different.

So my questions to those of you in the working world are: Where do you
work and what can you wear when you're there?

I work at my parents' chinese restaurant. I hate conforming to the
normal/professional look, but I do like my job so I guess it's ok...I can't
have any "wierd" haircolors or styles, and the dress code is basically 1)no
jeans, except on dress down days 2)no leather/vinyl and 3)no
mini-skirts...and probably a few other things I can't think of right now. I
wear lots of red and black; one of my fave things to wear is a red tank top
with my lacy mesh see-through t-shirt over it...that looks very gothic but I
can still get away with it.
When I'm 18 I'm getting my license (driving isn't my forte so I'm
waiting) I want to go work at the Borders 30 min. away from here, in yonder
small-city *sigh* They allow all the lovely hair colors, piercings, etc.
Plus it's an awesome store!

Whatever I want, really. I work for my SO, Cavalorn, selling occult &
alternative books.

However, I do try to look approachable to the clientele, so I'm dressier
on Saturdays when the kids are all out in force after Friday night's
clubbing & less dressy in the week.

Also, our new shop means that if I'm at the counter, I'm sitting behind
a huge window on display to humanity in general, so I try to make more
of an effort & not wear ultra-cleavagey things unless I'm feeling tough
enough to deal with people standing outside & leering at me, heh.

I usually wear a cammo jacket, my usual makeup, which is pretty minimal in

I work for American Express Financial Advisors and I can wear anything but
short shorts, cut offs,or t shirts with advertising/messages because it is
"summer casual" until Labor day. After that we have to wear business casual.
Which for me means black pants , black "dressy" t-shirt and a cardigan, doc
martens. I'd also like to point out that I was hired with my nostril, tongue,
lip, and both eyebrows pierced and black spiky hair.

I was let go from Starbucks because I had the piercings (at first i was
removing them before each shift but the lip and eyebrows were not liking it and
got sore and icky) because it wasn't considered professional. The Starbucks I
worked at was downtown and 90% of the customers were AEFA employees. It just
makes me smile that I looked too unprofessional to serve coffee to AEFA
employees and now I'm one of them.

I guess my job would technically be classified as 'labor', since I stand
on my feet 8 hours a day putting latex clothing together, so it has the
same "Wear whatever you'll be comfy in" dress code. For me that usually
means Anywear Clogs or Birkenstocks, and then whatever else I feel looks
nice enough for me to be seen on the street, but not so nice that I care
about it getting covered in latex powder/glue/potentially trashed in some
other way. Most of my coworkers wear jeans n' t-shirts, but since my
GIGANTIC ASS doesn't really look it's best in jeans, I tend to go for
casual tops and long, plain skirts.

I work in a casino, in the back of house
(don't have to deal face to face with guests).
Mon. - Thurs. I wear long skirts, lightweight
plaid or plain trousers, lots of little tees
(not quite a baby tee or tshirt), and cardigans
or sheer tops over (for indoor air-conditioned
cover-up). Most everything is black or
very muted shades, although I did get a few
cream colored tops for summer. Fridays
are dress-down: yesterday I wore blue
jeans, 8-hole docs, and a black short-sleeved
top.

I work at Super Crown bookstore. The dress code isn't too horrible. I can't
wear t-shirts, and that is a little hard for me, since most of the shirts I own
*are* t-shirts. Of course, no really baggy pants, no shorts, no open toed
shoes. Those things are sort of givens. Mostly to work I wear a light sweater
(usually 3/4 length), a skirt or either pair of my nicer, not so baggy black
pants, and some boots. I still wear all of my normal jewelry, and normal
make-up, though a lot of the time I can't be bothered with wearing even the
little amount I wear anyhow to work. :)

And unlike Borders, which I hear has a pretty lax dress code, I cannot have any
visible piercings, or weird colored hair. The weird colored hair thing sucks a
little, but right now, getting a paycheck and making some cash is more
important to me than having purple hair, hehe. I'll have plenty of time for
whatever color I want some other time, I figure.

i think i have the WORST dress code out of all of you. I work in a chain
store and have to wear a shirt with thier logo, tucked in, and a pair of their
jeans. AWFUL. I never had to wear a uniform to school and for the first time
i'm understanding how horrible it is to be forced to dress exactly like

I also work at an advertising agency, but in the media department, so no
"artsy" people around me to speak of. The dresscode is supposed to be
"business casual" (and trust me, there was concern about that changing when
we merged with another company), but people wear anything from suits to
jeans to shorts, and a few guys have earrings (my very gay boss has both his
ears pierced). But, as far as I can tell, pretty much anything goes. I tried to
look conservative when I got hired, but asked about my nosering when I got
hired, and it was fine with them. Now I have blue streaks at the front, wear all
my rings and my knee-high boots that my boss calls my "KISS boots." One of
my bosses, a middle-aged mom, said she loves the "wild things" I do. I pretty
much stick to long skirts, fitted t-shirts, some blouses, sweaters, tank tops now
that it's warm, the occasional band t-shirt, fitted pants, drawstring pants etc.
Nothing crazy.

I pretty much have my own rules for how I dress at work...nothing cleavage-y,
nothing too tight, nothing that shows a lot of my stomach, nothing fetishy...I
don't think any of those things are appropriate for the work environment. Plus
I don't want to get asked any more stupid questions than I already
get...someone pointed at my Bettie Page ring (a little pic of Bettie in lingerie
holding a whip...small so you'd need to take a good look) and asked, "is that
you?" I look nothing like her, and why would I wear a ring with a picture of
myself, anyway?? I don't wear much make-up at work either.

well, for a year i worked at Starbucks. pretty strict dress code, but not a
terrible one.

your only color choices were black, khaki, and white. no jeans, no short
skirts or shorts, etc. all shirts had to have some sort of collar. black
or brown shoes, no sneakers unless they were black leather. this was all
fine, i would often wear something like: long black skirt, stretchy black
mock-turtleneck, 20-eye gripfasts or comfy platform mary janes. nothing
very exciting, but nothing i felt uncomfortable or weird wearing. (unlike
the previous job, where i would wear denim shorts or jeans, a brightly
colored polo shirt with the company logo on it, and sneakers... bleh!!!)

lessee... neutral-colored socks, but i would often wear bright pink leopard
ones and no one cared. no nailpolish, which bugged some of my coworkers,
but i don't wear the stuff anyway. (this was because it was food service,
not because of the look. they just didn't want it chipping off in peoples'
food/drinks.) "tasteful" jewelry -- but no one every said anything about my
huge pink plastic *NSync watch, loads of gummi bracelets, or collars. no
unnatural hair colors or visible piercings other than ears.

BUT. i quit! yesterday was my last day! so now i am going to celebrate by
dyeing my hair purple -- i haven't dyed my hair in ages.

i hear the dress code is a little more lax in some other cities. i always
thought it was odd that they wanted us to look so professional... i mean i
realize it's *Starbucks*, but i've always kind of expected coffee shop
employees to look a little more creative than that. :) maybe that's just
me though.

I don't think anyone can beat me...I have to wear old and worn

I run the computer networks for a Civil Engineering Firm, and I can wear

I work in a University art department and have yet to run foul of a
dress code, but then I try not to scare the horses. I keep a couple of
fairly utilitarian skirts and tops aside for workwear, as I have to be
able to get up and down ladders, heft stuff around, and generally get
covered in paint and clay and general art crud. I've had blue & black
and pink & black hair whilst there, and this seems to be ok. As we
deal with Teacher Training for the most part, our students are pretty
conservative lookswise so I wouldn't want to get too wild and wacky,
not to mention how much of a health and safety problem buttloads of
plastic hair might be!

Hrmph. Every pair of trousers I have worn into school on a day with
chem lab now has a hole in it, except for the jeans with bleach marks
(chem again). Yes, I'm me-tooing, but, erm, at least you get paid for
it :P

As for the dresscode thing, I'd be wearing undamaged trousers (cords,
linen drawstring and a few others that I bought out of desperation)
and skirts (all below knee-length) with neat long-sleeved tops and
shirts if my job hadn't fallen through a day before I was to begin
(bitter, me?). Software company with a casual (but neat) dresscode.

well, mine's out of the ordinary, i guess.
I work nights in a Network Operations centre, for an upstream internet
content provider. I basically make sure the network doesn't die. My
company has no set dresscode, so I go by my personal dresscode which is as
follows:

no skirts more than 2" or so above knee
no tshirts with profanity on them
no excessive cleavage (if I'm coming onto a sunday shift after being a the
club, i have a little jacket to cover up shoulders/decolletage).
no torn up clothing.

and if a shirt is particularly wrinkly I consider ironing it.

Mostly I end up in combats trousers tshirt and stompy boots or long skirts
with stripeys and tshirt. fairly casual.

hair is purple hot pink and blue, I love this job! :)

Well, I don't know if I can beat you, but I'm right in there with you. I
work at Lowe's (a hardware store chain for those of you without one near
you) at the return desk, where all the nasty, used, and abused stuff comes
back (what, I ask you, possesses a person to bring back a *used* toilet
seat??) and I have to handle and sort all this crap. So, I have to wear
clothes that I don't care about. I do have an apron (yay) so I can wear
nicer shirts sometimes. However, I am on my feet in one spot for 8 hours a
day, so I fit into the "wear what is comfortable" category. The dress code
there is not too bad (no shirts with profanity or holes, any kind of pants,
but only khaki shorts - that means jeans all summer for me!) so I can wear
what I like, I just choose not too. However, they did just add a "stud
earring only - no hoops or dangles" policy, which I can't handle. I don't
wear them, so I am forced to take out my earrings. I only have seven, but
it's still depressing.
I need another job...

Here in Silicon Valley, the casual workplace is king. If yr at all
involved w/tech stuff, you can wear whatever the heck you want to.

I work at a music website startup (http://www.riffage.com/goth for a
sample of our best tunes ;-) as web production manager. I either sit in my
cube cranking out webpages or I'm in mtgs all day planning new pages &
features for the site. Even tho' we have quite the collection of ravers,
rockers, old-school punks, & a smattering of casualgoths, I'm often the
oddest dresser in the house -- & I'm pretty laidback by goth standards.
W/the recent heatwave, I've been in full-on TropiGoth mode. Cotton tank
dresses, floaty tropical print dresses, funky sandals, lotsa jewelry. In
cooler weather, I wear velvet skirts, fancy lil' shirts, pointy boots,
etc. My hair is currently jet black, but if I dyed it a color again, no
biggie (an html contractor I just hired has a screaming fuschia bob &
hardly anyone's blinked about it, not even the CEO).

I *could* easily wear corsets & crinolines to work & no-one would much
care (after all, my boss -who I got the job thru- is a friend I met on
alt.gothic 5yrs ago!). But I'm just too lazy. It's a pain to wear big
stuff on the crowded commuter train & bus that I take to work everyday.
Besides, I just don't have the time in the morning to tart m'self up much.
Bec. I take the train, I have to do a pretty strict 8-5 schedule, & I'm
not a morning person. I can barely drag my sorry ass out of bed in time to
swipe on a lil' makeup before I grumble out the door w/coffee in hand.

Well, I work for a lady who owns 9 Hallmark stores, in the home office,
doing accounts payable and related bits of stuff. It's a small office, only
5 people, so if I wear something odd, I do feel a bit conspicuous. The only
direction I was given was that I'm supposed to look "professional." Usually
I just wear long skirts or dress pants with knit tops, blouses, cardigans.
Just kinda mix and match. Almost always in black, charcoal, and white.
I try to keep the makeup and the earring count fairly toned-down, tho no
one seems to mind that my eye makeup is usually charcoal or silver based. I
started out very vanilla (colors, even!) and I've been gradually dressing
more and more like...well, like myself...and no one's said anything yet. My
hair's Plum Oasis, I'm not sure I'd dare go any odder than that.

I am the Office Manager for a freelance court reporting firm... though
it would be more accurate to say that I *am* the office. The reporters
all work from home, so I work alone.

Even though all our clients are attorneys (conservative), I can pretty
much wear whatever I want because no one ever sees me. The only
condition is that I have to cover up my bright purple hair if I ever
have to go into a law firm for any reason (which has only happened once
in 6 months). I think my bosses would frown on facial piercings or
lotsa tattoos, but I don't plan to get any of those, so it's never been
an issue.

Since I'm alone most of the time, I don't really feel the need to dress
up much. I have a dozen more-or-less plain black dresses that I wear,
or I'll wear a long skirt and plain top. I alternate between Docs, a
dressier pair of boots, and Mary Janes. I wear a little makeup, and
just wear my hair down or in a simple style. Some days I wear lots of
silver jewelry, some days none. In general, pretty toned down and
simple, but still obviously odd, I guess.

*HOWEVER* I will soon be working strictly for myself, and I'll have no
rules but my own. WOO-HOO!!!

I work in foodservice. I am required to wear black pants, a white shirt,
black shoes, and a bandana to cover my hair. Since I have to do things
like clean up 1,200 boys' food remains, take out garbage, and
ocassionally work runner (carrying a new hot pan [1] out to the food
line every two minutes), I pretty much go Wal-Mart clothes while
working.
Ah, the glamourous life :)

I work for a company that publishes class-schedule books for
universities (some of you college students may have used our work to
pick your classes). It's a small office and we get almost no in-person
client contact, so we don't have any kind of hard dress code.
Considering that they hired me with burgundy hair and I just got my nose
pierced, and that one of our most valuable employees has a septum ring,
numerous visible tattoos, and dyed-black hair to his waist, obviously
people don't get terribly worked up about appearance.

I've developed a work wardrobe that is pretty simple but still suits my
general gothy style: cotton knit tops and skirts, unstructured silk and
velvet blouses, tunic sweaters, long dresses in cotton knit or stretch
velvet, in monochromatic palettes (black, purples, grays, sometimes dark
green or burgundy), along with boots and tights (usually black,
sometimes I'll get whimsical and wear stripeys). This developed out of
my own laziness--stuff like this is easy to put on, easy to match up,
and easy to care for when I'm horridly busy or can't get out of bed on time.

I do wear full makeup to work, though I avoid the really outlandish
colors; I often wear purplish or silvery lipstick, but nothing that's
club-like. Nail polish can be anything. I also wear jewelry most days,
often expensive semi-precious stuff (I spend too much money on my
jewelry to only save it for "special" times)--and actually I'm looking
forward to my new piercing being healed so I can wear different things
in it to match my other jewelry. And as mentioned above, my hair is
burgundy, which usually causes people to exclaim about what a great
color it is and ask how I got it rather than give me any grief over it.

Well, I work with computers, creating stuff for the 'Web.
We've got clients, sure, but since I never get to
meet them, and usually just work all by myself/with
my young-ish-co-workers it really doesn't matter _at
all_ what I wear. If we've got a bigger staff-meeting,
then I try to wear something "nicer" but even then it
doesn't matter. We don't have a dress-code at all.

So, comfortability is a big issue here.
No long sleeves, as the sun shines very nastily into our
room. Usually a T-shirt, long skirt, hair up on a ponytail
or something and comfortable granny boots. Black, even though
today I'm wearing a purple skirt. This is one of the reasons
I feel like I could get braids for the summer: I won't be
meeting any boss-types in 2 months, so I don't really need
to look "normal." Usually, I don't wear any make-up, since
I can't be bothered in the morning...I want to sleep longer! :)

Delight, who is lucky to have this job! (Not just
dress-code-wise)

Hey, I'm new to this list so pardon me if I break any rules

Anyhows, I work for an online company and since it is a
small office and we rarely get visitors they are pretty
flexible. I can go any direction with hair color and any
type of clothing from t-shirts to business suits if I want.
Depends on the day though - I mostly stick to somewhat
respectable clothing, however, every so often the collars
and boots find their way back. We're also allowed as many
piercings or holes in our face as we want (13 in my ears and
one nose).

Well, only if you don't enjoy it. :) I know I am looking to switch jobs.
Our shoe code is pretty similar. Nothing open toed, sandal related (but
they're not specific about platforms), although I don't know how my feet
would appreciate them after a full shift. I'm glad about the open toe rule
though (after having an aluminum extension ladder dropped on my feet -
*that* was pleasant). So, I too am stuck wearing comfortable, sturdy shoes
(usually tennies - and I am _not_ a fan of tennis shoes) for the sake of
safety, and forgoing fashion. *sigh* I hate my job.

Hurrah for university research jobs! Last time I put turquoise, purple and
red streaks in my hair, no-one blinked. The tech guy said "Brightly
coloured hair!" and I said "Yeah" and he said "Cool". That was about all
the reaction I got.
Mostly I just wear jeans or leather jeans and a top of some description
(though it was so hot yesterday I actually dressed like a girl; Long black
skirt with creama nd red flowers, little black v-neck t-shirt), though if
I have a meeting or I'm meeting with non-university subjects, visiting
schools, whatever, I'll tend to smarten up a bit.

I work as a courier for the University Library System. Though
there's a good deal of office work as well, it's pretty casual. On the
blazing hot days, I generally wear muscle shirts and shorts with 8-
eyelet docs. Trying to stay cool when you're carrying books around in
the summer is a losing battle most of the time, though. Oh, and lots of

I work for a moderately sized high tech company. I do most of the
technical stuff on the website (www.loran.com) and write a lot of Perl
scripts for our product. Soon I will be doing a bunch of UI (User
Interface) design, but for now it's all Perl and web stuff.

The office is *very* casual. People only dress up (suits, skirts) if they
are meeting with clients. Almost everyone wears jeans/khakis and t-shirts.

Today I'm wearing:

- 20 hole black boots from Pegasus.
- a slim, ankle length black skirt with a slit up the left side to my knee.
- a black cotton t-shirt with a double scoop neck (you know...with a
little v in the middle of the neck line) and 3/4 length sleeves.
- a silver watch, two rings (one celtic band and one silver with a
garnet), and a siler bracelet with purple rocks in it.
- my choker. It's tough to describe. It's black pony beads with silver
washers and black leather cord. The picture in your mind is probably not
even close to what it looks like.
- one hair claw holding my hair up (barely...I have so damn much of it) in
a frantic poof.
- my broken Sony headphones (I listen to music all day. np: Garbage)
- my dark grey faux-velvet hoodie (cuz it doesn't feel like June yet...)

oooh! I'm so colorful!

makeup-wise I'm wearing
- Marcelle tinted moisturizer with sunscreen (the palest one..can't
remember the name)
- Marcelle translucent powder
- MAC Vanilla eyeshadow over the entire lid
- Marcelle Redwood eyeshadow in the creases
- some generic brand black eyeshadow as eye liner
- Marcelle black mascara
- MAC 'O' lipstick
- Marcelle Petal blush.

Nothing too crazy. The only comments I've ever gotten on my appearance
were: a) "Wow...those are neat boots" (they actually suck...zippers and
slumping...time for new ones, IMO) and b) "Bionic Babe, huh? Isn't that a
little sexist?" from one of my bosses in response to a tight t-shirt that
has "bionic babe" across the chest in glittery silver.

When I dyed my hair "Intense Burgundy" it almost came out black, and a
couple of people commented that it was too dark. Meh. It faded out to a
nice purple-red color in a few days. Then I got loads of complements on
it. Hrm...time to dye it again, I think. My blonde is showing.

I work in a design office where you'd *think* I could express myself, but
no. I played it safe at my interview and wore an ultra-conservative skirt
and jacket, but left my tiny diamond nostril stud in place. They hired me,
but outright told me to take the ring out! So obviously enough the arty
young creative look wasn't going to fly here. I wear pretty much only jeans
and capri pants, with twinsets and baby-tees in different colours. I look
super plain (think Gap) but I think I actually dress up more than other
people in the office! My excessively large silver rings are the *only* hint
to my weekend look yet they've provoked bewildered comments from co-workers
(who are all married with children). It kind of sucks when your idea of
working in a design office is shattered completely but I guess that's
reality for you!

I work for a media place (the Big 'Un, if you know media stuffs you know what
I'm talkin' 'bout!) in midtown Manhattan, and it's pretty casual here. I'm in
the tech department, so we don't have to deal with lots of people, and techies
always seem to dress, um, less... fancy? than other department people. I wore
a nice grey pencil skirt with a long sleeved Club Monaco tan tshirt today, tan
slides, no hose or gross stuff. It's pretty "office casual," but no casual
Friday. I think I could get away with "nice" denim, but not ratty jeans. I've
worn my big platform boots recently and no one said anything, probably because
my feetsies are under the desk all day.

It's casual, but I still would feel very conspicuous in a place like this if I
wore normal, everyday clothes.

through stuff which doesn't belong in a library anyway. I wear alot of
my vintage 40s and 50s dresses, beaded cardigans, mostly black tights,
and just about any shoe I want. People always think of librarians and
libraries as dull conservatives but they really are the most interesting
fun places to work. And if you get lucky you get to work in a library
that has a library cat. :)

I'm a full time software tester at Microsoft.

I can wear anything as long as the basics are covered, and I don't wear
anything patently offensive.

Oh yeah - they require you to wear shoes in the cafeterias. (This is
actually a problem).

Currently, I'm bedecked in a Radiohead t-shirt, black BDU shorts, and
black Docs. With reddish orangeish pink hair, courtesy of a botched up
bleach job and some Vermillion Red Punky Color.

ps - my current wardrobe is identical to what I wore to my interview,
except I wore long green BDU pants instead of shorts.

Right now I'm an intern at a large health care company in northern
illinois, abbott labs. I work in a lab/office setting, so I can wear
basically whatever I want except no shorts and no spaghetti straps,
however, It's not looked well upon to dress down a lot. Once in a
while I'll wear jeans and a top, as I did all last summer, but I get
treated much more respectfully if I wear dressy pants and a top or a
blouse and skirt. In the company itself it's recommended that you
dress for the position "above you" but for summer the dress code has
been suspended to 100% business casual. My hair right now is red with
blondish highlights, and last summer when i worked at the same place
it was black, but I also find that I get taken more seriously with a
natural hair color, which means nix on anything that's not blackish
brownish reddish. Too bad.

Yes, I work for a business, and I'm planning on being a salesperson in
the future (pending I get a job of course) this means lots of suits
and uncomfy clothing for me... at least suits are becoming sleeker and
more flattering as of late. ;)

Which is my answer too!

(But I don't work in the same building as C-ko.)

For those of you who saw me at c6, you saw what I wear to work. Big
Skirts <tm> with petticoats, frock coats, and the top hat with the
veils. Right now I'm wearing a Big Skirt with a dark blue twist lace
dress over the top of it, big silver rings, and my top hat. My new
sandals that I'm breaking in are under my desk.

Also, my team has dress-up days, where there is a specific theme to our
clothes. A couple of weeks after I started, we had Goth Day. My
manager looked *really* good as a goth, and is planning on having
another goth dress-up day in the next month or so, complete with a team
portrait.

that's really insanely cute, Jillie!!%#$

I've been at my job for three whole weeks now and they've already
figured out that I'm the token lil goth girl. It's a very laidback
ecommerce startup so no one is mean or rude about it, but I get tons
of jokes about the all-black. Ironically enough, I am rarely ever
wearing *all* black at work. It's the days I wear a white shirt or a
flowered skirt that I get the comments. Today our CEO was wearing
grey-black pants and a black shirt, and someone asked me if I'd
been giving him fashion advice. heh.

To answer the poll.. um.. I don't really push the envelope at all
because I'm still pretty new there, but I certainly wear my Doc
Martens.. a bit of makeup (eyeliner and lipstick always).. black
dresses... long black skirts with tailored shirts. Today I wore a
floral crinkly skirt (black with mainly light purple flowers) with a
black baby-tee and buckley mary janes. I own lots of plain, straight,
long black skirts and I make good use of them all. I'm sure I could
get away with band tshirts or short skirts or BDU pants or the like,
but I don't.

I never wear miniskirts because in my world, if you wear a short
skirt, you must wear big boots, and I don't feel that my stompy-ass
tall boots are terribly professional (at least not the image I'm
trying to project in the office where I already feel like a slacker).

Hmmm. I guess I'll de-lurk to add my $20 to this discussion(2 cents
doesnt cut it these days LOL).I work for Bell Atlantic.I was a customer
service rep,but couldnt handle the stress and downgraded to an
administrative asssistant.I usually wear black blazers, long black
skirts, and mostly docs or medium height platform boots.Makeup is usually
black or brown lipstick,and sometimes eyeliner.Sometimes I'll wear a
t-shirt with a catchy(but appropriate for work environment LOL)saying,
or a band shirt. When I do wear something black w/flowers or the
occasional dark purple or blue,or burgundy, some co-workers just feel the
need to make a comment. But most of them are a bunch of middle aged women
with no lives so I dont care.I'll just use them as an exmaple of what
not to become when I"grow up"(27 yrs young and counting)! The biggest
hassle I've noticed comes from the "hip-hop" idiots I've encountered(I
guess theyve never seen a "black" goth before?)But I figure its a good
paying job,and at least I've got a good life so who cares what ANYONE
thinks ; ) Jenna-Maris

You've actually _got_ air conditioning!

I work for a bespoke software company with a smart casual dress code.
Usually I wear ankle-length black circle skirt in crushed velvet, or ankle
length full skirt in black crushed velvet, a smart black t-shirt, with plain
tights and granny boots, except last week it was so hot in the office that
once I got there I lost the tights and boots and wore my slippers instead
(must buy sandels). Sometimes I wear an ankle length layered dress with
lace toplayer, but only when I get around to the handwashing.

What I wear is limited by the fact that we can end up at Clients' offices
with less than an hours notice, and have to look professional.

When our last new guy started, there were some comments about the "black"
end of the office.

No gothic jewellery - one of my colleagues is a born-again christian and I
can do without the arguments.

When I have to go see clients by appointment it's the standard suit, though
with an ankle length skirt and still with the granny boots.

In my office, winter and summer are the same thing. We have extra sweaters
lying around because it's so cold we can't even move. That's why i get colds in
summer - because of the contrast of Hell outside and a freezer inside.
I end up wearing long skirts of dark colors, button down shirts in dark colors,
and a big ol black cardigan sweater to keep me warm..makeup is minimal..just
some dark shadow or liner and they dont really care what jewelry i wear, but i
do the minimal watch and bracelet...

of course now i have no watch, a bunch of my bracelets are gone, and my
lipstick, makeup remover, and face scrub, and sunblock (all Clinique) is GONE
because my bag is gone : (

I work in an office (but hopefully not for long, this job search is taking
forever) but it's casual, pretty much use your own judgement thing. I can gets
away with wearing my docs, my stompy platform boots, all black (I usually keep
it simple), funky tights, different color hair. The only thing I ever got a
"talking to" about was band t-shirts. Go figure. I think because my work
performance level is so high, I get some leeway. Plus the one VP loves when I
dye my hair or where falls.

I shan't work anywhere that doesn't have it, and keep it cold. It's a

Cripes. Some people are so nosey.

Not death... though I don't think I would take a job where I couldn't
wear a tank top and ankle length skirt, all black, which is my summer
staple.

I work at a very fun indie bookstore in Boston MA (Brookline actually).
We do have "Team Booksmith" T-shirts, but those are usually saved for the
busy holiday seasons when everyone absolutely needs to know who works
there. Pretty much anything's okay except stuff with a lot of holes,
spikes, etc. We had a guy (unfortunately he left last year) whose
haircolor alternated between purple and blue almost daily. The store's a
fun place and our boss encourages us to be as creative as possible while
still keeping to the few rules for staff clothing (nothing offensive or
rude, no spikes, no clothes with excessive/visible holes or stains). When
I'm not wearing the store shirt, I paste one of the store stickers on my
back; it doesn't clash badly with what I'm wearing most days and it's
obvious that I work there (some customers, if they see you once with an
armload of books coming from the backroom they automatically know you work
there. Some don't however),. I do have a collar I can wear daily; black
velvet with rhinestones. At first I thought I was going to get yelled at
for the buckle (heavy dog-collar buckle), but that didn't happen.

I went throught this a month or so ago before I got my new job. I work
for an old, stuffy bank that caters to the terribly wealthy. I wear
lots of black suits, almost exclusively pants suuits with different
jackets. I also either wear lug-sole dress shoes, platform mary janes,
or I will give in (when we have a corporate event) and wear chunky
heels. I pair my suits with dramatic shirts though, so say if I have a
meeting or some event where I have to look very professional, I will
just close my jacket, otherwise, I just leave it open or take it off. I
am able to feel comfortable in my position and still feel like I'm
keeping people guessing. On a side note, I got a lot of good advice
from people on this ng!
