Shawshank Redemption 'greatest non-Oscar winner'
22/09/2004 - 13:33:47

Prison drama The Shawshank Redemption has come top of a poll of great films
to miss out at the Oscars.

Classics like The Wizard Of Oz, The Great Escape and Psycho all failed to
receive a Best Picture Academy Award.

Now movie fans have created a list of top 10 films to miss out on Best
Director, Actor, Actress or Best Picture gongs.

The Shawshank Redemption, which took the top spot in the survey to mark the
launch in England of a Radio Times film guide, was nominated for seven
Academy Awards.

The film, a parable of a wrongly convicted man who triumphs over terrible
adversity, was shortlisted for Best Picture and Best Actor for Morgan
Freeman, but failed to win a thing.

Frank Capra's It's A Wonderful Life, starring James Stewart as the man
prevented from committing suicide by an elderly angel, made it to second
place in the poll.

Steven Spielberg's box office smash E.T. The Extra Terrestrial came third.

Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, was fourth in the survey, followed
by prisoner of war adventure The Great Escape, starring Steve McQueen.

Judy Garland classic The Wizard Of Oz, which won Best Song for Over The
Rainbow, came sixth in the poll of 6,000 movie fans.

Billy Wilder's classic Some Like It Hot, starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony
Curtis and Jack Lemmon, took seventh place.

Spielberg's The Color Purple, which received a Best Picture nomination and a
Supporting Actress one for Oprah Winfrey, was ranked eighth on the list.

Spielberg's Raiders Of The Lost Ark, which picked up Oscars for the likes of
editing and visual effects, came ninth, followed by Alfred Hitchcock's
Psycho.

Film critic Barry Norman, who has written the introduction to the 2005
edition of the Radio Times Guide To Films, said: "Looking at this list
really exposes the major voting mistakes Academy members have made over the
years.

"Each of these films have left their own indelible mark on the face of movie
history but, amazingly, all managed to go home without any major Academy
Awards on their respective Oscar nights."

Shawshank Redemption director Frank Darabont said the ranking was a
"fantastic honour".

He said: "I'm truly blown away. Making this most meaningful is the fact that
it's voted for by those whose opinions count most - the audience.

"I'm extremely grateful to all who voted and put my film in such exalted
company. What a list to be on."

The 10 best movies never to have won a Best Picture, Director, Actor or
Actress Academy Award are:
1. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
2. It's A Wonderful Life (1946)
3. E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
4. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
5. The Great Escape (1963)
6. The Wizard Of Oz (1939)
7. Some Like It Hot (1959)
8. The Color Purple (1985)
9. Raiders Of The Lost Ark (1981)
10. Psycho (1960)

I'm glad it was eligible for the list--can't stand that movie!

Being Nominated is a award in itself.

What about a list of those that should have been
nominated but were not?

Shawshank Redemption is my all time favorite movie. My son gave me a framed
black & white poster of a scene in the prison yard for Christmas a few years
ago. It's a close-up of Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins talking to each other.
I gave it the place of honor on the fireplace.

I love Shawshank Redemption also. Even though I'm not a "fan" type (I do love
gossip though), I am a great admirer of Morgan Freeman. I have to say that
this is one actor I would love to have as a next door neighbor. There's
something so calm and kind about him. I don't know a thing about his "real"
life but I bet he was a wonderful father.

I too admire Morgan Freeman (ever since his absolutely perfect acting in
"Driving Miss Daisy"). I now watch everything he appears in!
