I have this dwarf paladin. He collected ore and leather to make gold until
level 63, but I wanted him to be a blacksmith.
Now, he is. I have crafted some stuff and he is now at 200 blacksmithing.
So, I have two choice : he can be an armor crafter, or a weapon crafter.
And if he choose weapon, he will be able to choose between axe, hammer and
sword.
Great... So, which one do I choose? He is a protection paladin, and he will
stay protection.
Crafting armor seems nice, since he will be able to wear several pieces of
armor, but only one weapon.
Crafting weapons, swords, is tempting, for RP reasons.
But maybe there is some craft that are so good for a protection paladin,
that I would be foolish to choose another way?
What you can craft is mainly DPS equipment for lvl 70, so it doesn't
matter much. You can craft some nice two hand weapons as weapon crafter,
but they are for Ret Paladins and you will need to use a shield for
tanking. As Armorsmith you can craft the Bulwark of Kings, which is
pretty nice for a tank.
Just take what you like, it doesn't really matter. Be aware that
Armorsmith is the most expensive of the smithing professions. Even if
you want to go Armorsmith it's way cheaper to first become a Weaponsmith
and then change professions.

End-level armorsmith armor is a DPS plate - so not that useful for a
tank. Lower level armorsmith-exclusive recipes are usually not
worthit , especially compared to Outland drops and quest rewards.

For a protection paladin it doesn't matter much - you will not use any
specialty items for tanking. I took hammersmith for occasional ret
fun. In retrospect I think I should have taken jewelcrafting or
engineering (or even enchanting), blacksmithing is not that good - you
can buy almost all things from other blacksmiths and BoP recipes are
few. But I spent too much money on it to drop it now ;)

None of the craftable weapons are good for a protection paladin. A
prot pally wants a weapon with lots of spell damage and plenty of
stamina, and there are no such choices available. If you are an
armorsmith, you can craft nice BOP tanking boots, although some badge
rewards are roughly equal.

It's a chest item, right?

I was reading the quests with that dwarf in Stranglethorn, Galvan... "Give
me 40 mithril bars, give me 40 iron bars, blablabla".
That's seems like an idea... I take swords, and if I want to change later
to armorsmith, I just pay for it, but if there is nothing, I will stick to
swords.
Thanks everyody
I'm a warrior and an armorsmith so i can't relate on some levels, but
I'll say the Bulwark is nice for a HP set and that's about it. I
also, wear it for pvp (even though it has +12 sta gems).
as a paladin you should just be an enchanter or something =P

Engineering is also very good for a paladin (nice trinkets, excellent
tanking goggles). Or jewelcrafting (nice trinkets, some good BOP
tanking gems). My prot pally has both of those professions. :-)

Argh! That's off topic ! Enchanting is not a blacksmithing specialization !
;-)

Re-argh! Stop that, it hurts! I knew it was a bad idea to take
blacksmithing ;-)
Must be expensive, I suppose you have another char to provide mining
material?
I'm tempted to do something like that with my horde chars : I have two
ingineers and a jewelcrafter. Each is a miner, so it would be possible to
drop two mining to another thing.
But the paladin is the only one alliance-side, so it's not an option for
now, unless I start transferring tons of ore from horde to alliance.
Yup, my old main is a miner with an epic mount. My pally used to be a
miner/jewelcrafter, but I dropped mining, because those engineering
goggles were far too tempting. :) My main used to be a skinner/
leatherworker, but those professions aren't nearly as good for making
gold as mining.
Blacksmithing seems to be best suited for DPS warriors/paladins.

You're a bit late for that one. The best time to do that quest is right at
level 40, as you get a trinket reward that spawns an epic hammer for 1 hour
in every 3. I held off on leveling my warrior/smith to 40 until I could
amass the mats for that quest.
My prot pally smith is an armorsmith, and I'm figuring on getting the
Scryor patterns. (We already have an Aldor smith in the guild.)
