People are playing U2 (Underground 2) online, using Hamachi's virtual LAN application
and server. Here is how to set it up:

Download the Hamachi LAN app:

https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/list.asp

Edit
\Program Files\EA Games\Need for Speed Underground 2\server.cfg
and delete the last line in server.cfg or put a # in front of it to
remove the binding ... ADDR=%%bind("159.153.253.82") ... or download this zip
with original (serverorg.cfg) and replacement file (server.cfg):

http://jeffareid.net/nfs8/n8srvcfg.zip

Install Hamachi, select non-commercial user (free version) or trial version.
You can delete
\Documents and Settings\<yourname>\Application Data\Hamachi
ever 25 day or so and restart Hamachi to reset the 30 day trial period
(or you could pay $49 / year).

Set Hamachi network connection as highest priority (else others won't be
able to see your server):

For XP/2000: Start > Control Panel > Network Connections, then, on the menu
bar, click Advanced > Advanced Settings and put Hamachi at the top of the list.

For Vista: Start > Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center, then, on the
left side panel, click on 'Manage Network Connections'. Now press Alt, click
on Advanced > Advanced Settings and put Hamachi at the top of the list.

Run Hamachi, then join server: turnuva26, password: 123. There are other
servers, but turnuva26 has been promoted well enough to make popular.
It's a Turkish server so their peak hours won't correspond with yours
if you're in a different time zone.

Start up U2 (Underground 2). If your system is multi-core, alt-ctl-del
out to task manger, right click on process speed2.exe, and set affinity
to only one cpu (use cpu 0 if you want to use fraps, which defaults to cpu 1),
as U2 (or any NFS game before ProStreet) will crash if multiple cpus are used
for U2. Back into U2, and click on LAN, hopefully you'll see one or more
servers. Join that server's lobby and set the filter, the annoying aspect of
U2 online because you can't set it to "any". Alt-tab out of U2 and look for
messages from turnuva26, usually players will specify the filter setting just
before creating a game. If you have a second monitor, you can use that to
watch for filter settings.

For the online play via LAN, career cars can be used, including uniques and
ECU tuning via hex editting, and most players are using these. I archived
my old nfsu2.zip as:

http://jeffareid.net/nfsu2/nfsu2old.zip

and create a new one:

http://jeffareid.net/nfsu2/nfsu2.zip

There's an alternative link, but the content of the zips are identical:

From the readme.txt in nfsu2.zip:

http://jeffareid.net/nfsu2/nfsu2.zip or http://jeffareid.net/nfs8/nfs8.zip

For Windows XP, extract zip to here:

\Documents and Settings\NAME\Local Settings\Application Data\NFS Underground 2

where NAME is your XP account name. Local Settings and Application Data are
hidden folders, so you'll need to change folder options to be able to view
hidden folders.

Career cars - Corolla, Navigator, 240SX, Golf, Mustang
Ranked cars - left over from online play back in 2005

On Corolla #2 for Outer Ring, rear ride height, springs, and shocks
are set to far right for more top speed (game quirk). You may want to
set these back to the far left to make the car easier to drive.

Circuit - On some corners it's better to slide or bounce off the fencing
or wall, but not always. Wide body kits may make the cars crash if
sliding or bouncing on walls, so I removed them. For Bayview URL tracks
and Outer Ring, it's best not to hit anything as walls are too far from
track running clean laps gives you more nitrous. The Miata is almost
as fast as the Corolla.

Drag - Launch rpm varies a bit with the track. The cars crash at
Construction if full speed. I don't know how to fix this problem.
There's a faster "wheelie" setup, but I don't how to set this up.
RX8 #2 has unique tranny, for lower 1st gear launch. Using nitrous
with a taller 1st gear may also work. 240SX, RX7, RX8 #1, and RX8 #2
can run about 20.2 at Bayview with current setups.

Drift - Weave car side to side on straights. Keep in 1st gear most
of the time for drift tracks. For downhill, 2nd or 3rd gear can
be used for the faster sections. The Golf is least affected
by difficulty (easy, medium, hard) since it's front wheel drive, and
higher difficulty appears to decrease rear grip more than front grip.
For an easier Golf setup, try front 5, rear 5. Other cars can also
be used for drift, like the A3 or RX8 #2.

Once in LAN mode, you can see "ranked" cars in the car selection screen.
These were used for online play when the EA servers were working.
They can't be tuned or swapped for other cars from within the game
anymore (it would require external edit of save file).
They are left overs from a 2005 save.

Career mode 100% complete, played on easy, so I could get 300 rep points per
race for all 222 races. All outruns won.

Tuning of ecu and turbo for the cars was done by editting the savefiles.
Most career and my cars have all unique peformance parts, some do not
have the unique transmission. In the case of the Outer Ring Corolla,
it lowers the top speed of the 5 speed setup. In the case of the drag
cars, it bogs the engine on the start.

All cars are setup for all modes, but each game mode (circuit, drag,
drift) has dominant cars. The Miata is almost as fast as the Corolla.
The 240SX, RX7, RX8 #1, RX8 #2 are about the same for drag. Golf
is normally used for highest points, but other cars can do well in
drift such as the A3 or the RX8 #2 and may be easier to drive.

Last post of this sequence.

Note that most of the players on turnuva26 are "novices", so
take it easy on them. One clue is usage of a non-dominant
car (assuming it's not an expert handicapping), otherwise
you won't know until the race starts.

For circuit mode, the Corolla is the dominant car. Next
is the MX5, then probably what I call RX8 #2 (there are
2 RX8's in nfsu2.zip). After that I'm not sure. The 350Z
is one of the slowest normal cars. The Mustang and GTO
are slow in nfsu2 and a SUV like the Navigatorwould be
the slowest.

For drag, the 240sx, rx7, rx8 #1, rx8 #2 are all fast,
running around 20.2 at Bayview. The rest of the cars
run from about 20.5 to about 22 with an analog controller.
Even the Navigator runs in the 25's and at South Runway
(shortest track) it's run 23.89.
