Avatar in 3D..

In the 50's they promised us flying cars, a cure for cancer and 3D movies.
When I walked out of the movie I thought, "Wow, they finally came through
with the 3D movies part." I thought it was pretty much flawless and mind
bending.

I asked my wife what she thought and she said, "Aw, it's just a gimmick."
This kinda floored me. I wondered how anyone couldn't be impressed with
the technology.

Opinions?

Haven't seen it yet but I'm going to. Do they supply the glasses? Good
ones or the red/green ones?

I heard the camera was specially made for that film. This is good as the
film is making so much money I'll bet they pour a few more million in the
technology. Only going to get better I figure.

It's a whole new technology using circularly polarized light from digital
projectors. They give you polarized sunglasses thingies. When you see
stuff floating way out in front of the screen it'll freak you out.

I've seen the trailers and nothing thus far induces me to want to go see
this. Looks stoopid, blue cartoony aliens?
I am a great SF fan but this looks gimmicky and I doubt there is anything
genuinely new in the plotline which for me is the most important aspect.
I have seen 3D movies in the distant past. Remember one of the Jason movies
in the 70's. Was crappy and stoopid then sitting there in crappy cheapo
glasses, cannot imagine it's anything better now.
I'll wait quite happily for it on TV.

Someone recently posted about a flying car (actually a car/aircraft
hybrid) which you can already pre-order. I thing however that the cool
flying cars will only be available in 2015 (remember Doc Brown and Marty
McFly?). As the the cure for cancer, it's not here yet, but there have
been a lot of progress in the field, many forms of cancer which where
lethal are now easily cured.

I will be going to see Avatar as soon as possible. In 3D of course. For
now, I'm at my second week in the big city (remember my post about a new
life which I posted December 18th or so), I'm still managing to get used
to the place, and since I'm still at the hotel I'm not totally in it
yet. Will already be better next week when I finally get a vehicule. So
for now I prefer to spend all my free time (and I don't have much)
relaxing at the hotel with the laptop and the HD TV on the wall. Will
probably try to spend an evening at the movies next week. There is one
advantage about being in the big city, I will be able to see the movie
in English -- In Sherbrooke most movies where available in both French
and English 15 years ago, but it has became difficult to find movies in
English over the years, I don't know why.

As far as the plot, yeah... James Cameron wrote it and it's predictable...
but so is a Die Hard movie... Hero gets in middle of a dastardly plot,
lots of people die, hero wins in the end.

It's the execution that can make a difference, and there's a lot of
flawless detail and creativity.

And no... this ain't your grandfather's 3D.

The graphics were incredible. It was hard to tell where real became CGI.
Pity Flight Sim will never attain these heights now.

Have to agree with you, Dallas. I was blown away by the graphics!
Wife also talked me in to seeing the "Christmas Carol" in 3d. It was
good, but not as well done as Avatar. I'm sure not an expert on
movies, as I don't visit theaters that often. (The only other 3d
movie I've seen was "House of Wax" back in '53, lol.)

Wonder what kind of certificate you need to pilot one of them flying
lizards!! [:0)

I've heard that women, and in particular, wives and girlfriends, are

I've also heard that with some of them, the only reason they start a new

I guess I am just getting too damn old.
There was a time in my life I would have probably really enjoyed a movie
like that. I remember when Star Wars hit the big screen for the first time,
I think it was 1977, I was awestruck. Went and saw it twice at the theatre.
I have seen previews of Avatar, and to me now it just looks dumb - I am sure
it is probably good, I just have no desire to view it.

As many tickets as it's been selling, the film has been making a BIG

Bah Humbug?... come on Don... ya ain't that old!

Walking out of Avatar, the first Star Wars came to mind... I thought this
was pretty much as ground breaking as the first Star Wars. Without the 3D,
it's probably equal to Start Trek 2009.

Well we saw it last week and thoroughly enjoyed it although I'm not really
into Sci Fi. It had a good story where the hero changed sides and fought
the sick American mission to conquor and destroy some other being's very
sacred beautiful territory It had a nice romantic touch to it and the 3D
was just incredible. We were issued with substantial plastic framed
polarised glasses for $1.80 which we took home for next time.

Well, we've come a long way in the fight against cancer, heck even HIV is no
longer a sertain death sentence, the flying cars are still not quite here
yet, but in Japan they have hovering trains (Maglev), guess that'll have to
do for now :o/

3D movies however.........back in the days of red and green goggles they
were all B-movies spiced up with that fancy new technollogy to sell a few
tickets, even Jaws 3 had to be spiced up to get some one to watch it, from
what I've seen of Avatar it sadly looks like the tradition is kept alive.
Yes the tech part has improved a lot, but the movies are just about the same
as back then :o(

Ever been to an Imax theater? Now THAT's as real as being there, and they've
even started making 3D movies for those domed screens, sadly though most of
the films made for Imax are documentarys and rock concerts with U2 and the
Stones, but the docus are worth every cent and second spend. So far I have
watched 3 Imax films, one was made durring a Shuttle mission, and it was
really like being there, apart from the G-forces, the other two were on our
solar system and the effects were jaw droppingly stunning.

Where I work we have WDTV media players set up in most cases, through
projectors usually used for training. It's not unusual to see blokes
watching a 16:9 or wider format movie in a heavily squashed 4:3 format,
even though a button on the remote allows quick adjustment.

Most of them can't tell the difference between SD and HD. They don't
really care about all that "geeky stuff", they just want a big TV.

3D? Dunno. It's coming anyway, some will appreciate it, most won't care.

I'd probably go see Avatar myself if it weren't for the cliched, wholly
predictable and vomit-worthy storyline.

A pet peeve of mine too... about half the people in the world have wide

If the cure for cancer were announced tomorrow 250,000 people would
be out of a job, probably more, and by the way it's a cancer industry.
There are no official cures for cancer.. only `treatments.

Now for the movie Avatar. This evening we caught the end of a streaming
radio show where Carly Matrisciana was the guest. Here is a review of
Avatar on her site: http://carylmatrisciana.com/x2/content/view/148/1/

Figures that it's about Pantheism, a faith that equates God with Nature.

Do some other searches with these terms: "Avatar movie occult" and then
throw in: magical, mystical, kabbala, pagan etc.

Look up: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mensch

I think you'll find that the etymology of the word "mench" shows that
it is a bastardisation of the word "mensch". I win. :-)

I can't help it Valter Mitschki... I'm clearly not as Jewish as you are.

Au contraire, mon ami. I am not in the least Jewish. I am however
fluent in German and I know a German-derived word when I see one.
Many Yiddish words are German-derived.

It's been quite nostalgic actually - taken me back to my childhood when
most winters were like this. So, thanks! :-)

We should not be so influenced or misled by the media, at least not
blindly. To find out what's behind this movie and the powerful message
it delivers see: Jan 12, 2010 broadcast at 3:00 -- Avatar & Twilight

Some of the teevee watchers may not be able to hear it through. It made
me cringe a few times. Also there are 3 - 4 min blocks of commercial ads
that can easily be fast-forwarded through. These are not necessarily my
views but do explain a lot about what's going on.

A world agenda? Na.. pantheism is our original lingering human believe
system on the decline since we began walking upright.

The new "world agendas" are Christianity and Islam.

How come you're not upset about those?

According to some, the elite have fomented a war between 1 billion
Christians and 1 billion Muslims with the object of them fighting each
other in total exhaustion and ruination, the object being the collapse
of both. Enter the NWO and new world religion.

Albert Pike defined the WWIII scenario above a long time ago. You can
find a statue of Pike in Judicial Square in Washington D.C. Want to see
a photo of it?

Not necessary. Muslims believe that the Day of Resurrection will only
come when the Muslims make war against the Jews and kill them.

I must live under a rock. I thought that stuff ended in the 40's.

There appears to be a lot of bad people out there that just can't live and
let live.

Me I could care less what my neighbor does... well as long as there is no
bullets flying type of thing in my neighborhood. Has actually been that
way for the last 25 years or so. Last couple of months some cars been
broken into, - maybe things are changing.

According to some, that was George W's plan for the Middle East to trigger
the End of Days.

It may have worked...

I haven't seen the movie, but given what the NYT article says about
it, I could interpret the movie to be a futuristic projection of the
ongoing threat posed by capitalist imperialism (civilisation) towards
"primitive" people on THIS planet. Only in this case there's a happy
ending for the victims of rapacious, arrogant, imperial
"civilisation".

It's a classic "victory for the underdog" theme, but with the
interesting twist that this time the bad guys are in fact our own good
selves. I think it's this that strikes a chord with a growing number
of people who are realising that unfettered consumerism and the
globalised capitalism it has spawned will trash this planet and every
culture which gets in its way, leading them to empathise with the
NaVi.

Gregory, WE, the consumers, ARE the enablers of the conspirators.
