I have yet to spend any points in swimming. It is currently at 3 and I
barely move in the water. Does the amount of points you have in swimming
directly correspond to how fast you can swim or maneuver in the water? Or
does is just make you able to swim longer without feeling the effects of
fatigue as quickly. Also, fighting in the water seems damn near impossible
since the current seems to move me about will-nilly. I tried fighting a
Hammerhead shark near the docks of Freeport once with this guy Josepy and we
barely got out alive. We sat around joking about never doing that again
and how lucky we were when some man hating NPC Female Dark Elf came along
and turned us inside out with a couple hits. But back to the swimming
thing ... Anyone know about this? Thanks.

Near as I can tell, it primarily affects your swimming speed, it does not
seem to affect your swimming stamina. I can, at least, say that I am sure it
affects your speed. I can swim pretty quick now. (Swimming 45)

Higher swimming skill helps with you not feel the effects of fatigue as
quickly. This skill goes up like a rocket just swim around in safe waters
and it will skill cap for your level very quickly. I wouldn't waste any
training points on it.

Mine is up to 100 now and I move like a torpedo. Though high swimming
didn't help any a couple levels ago when a gnoll shaman rooted me
underwater. :)

I gained about 50 down in the sewers, I swim like a fish these days... Takes
a while for it to start go up, but once it does it will sky rocket.

Good luck on the swimming...

All I know is that as a barb I swim everytime I go back forth from Halas to
Everfrost and I usually pass other races (who didn't grow up with this
necessity) or lower level barbs. I have to think that high skill increases
swimming speed.

Swimming skill definately increases swimming speed and less fatigue. I
spent a couple days fighting Giant Paranha in West Commons and went from
about 5 swimming to 60 (skill cap at that time) and it was amazing the
difference in swimming speed and abilities.

On a side note, I love fighting in the water. It is not impossible, just a
little more challenging. It is tons of fun and more exciting than standing
still, talking with your buddies, while autoattack does its thing.

Besides, if you get into trouble, all you have to do is get out of the water
instead of running for a zone.

Yes it does allow you to swim better. I have my skill up to 55 and I can
sometimes swim faster then I can run.

I started a delf necro yesterday. While wandering back to the 3rd Gate in
Neriak from the commons, I came across a waterfall. I thought (my first
mistake) hmm... wonder if there's anything hidden behind this waterfall...
so I stepped into it.. and watched the walls rise up beside me as the air
meter appeared. I tilted my head up and pushed the up arrow, hoping I could
swim back up to the ledge... when I broke surface, I was in the lake that
the waterfall flowed into, and had made level 1 in swimming :)

I have a Swimming question too.

Does your stamina affect the length of time you can hold your breath?
If your Swimming skill increases, can you hold your breath longer?

Yes, stamina does effect the length of time you can hold your breath.

As your swimming skill increases, your breath time is longer and you can
swim faster.

Most of the time getting out of the water is ok, but sometimes that croc
you were fighting will come out of the water right after you.

Yikes, that must be a really traumatizing experience. I'd have a
blast roleplaying the after-effects of this.
