Does anyone else think that the only way the Light will win is for Rand to
die? It seems to be leading up to that, with his maddness growing stronger
every day, and with his two deadly wounds....

What do ya think?

Personally, I don't think so. Although it is a feasible outcome, I
can't believe that RJ would end the life of one of his main charactors.
Besides, the prophecy only states that "his blood" would be spilt on
the rocks. While many may think this indicates his death, all it would
take to fulfill this prophecy would be Rand to bleed on the rocks and

Well yes, it is looking that way. But can you imagine what would happen

says is his blood on the rocks it doesn't demand his life. ( In fact it

I certainly hope so. Not that I don't like the guy, but it would be a
bit too happy if he lived, wouldn't it?

I believe that LTT will die at Shayol Ghul and that also is supported by
Min's viewing of Rand where there are two men batteling and one will die.

Yeah, techinically, he doesn't have to die...just his blood has to be
spilt. But I think he *will* die, nonetheless. Yes, he's the major
character, but RJ doesn't need to keep him alive at the end of the
series. And, IMO, its a sign of good writing when author's aren't
afraid to kill off their characters to further the plot (not that RJ's
writing talent needs to be proven any further =D).
The only real textual evidence I have for him dying is Min's vision of
him in a funeral bier. Also, although this is rather shaky, his death
as the sign of the end of the age could parallel LTTs, to keep in lne
with the whole repetition thing he has going. :)

Peace favor your sword,

Twice and twice shall he be marked,
Twice to live, and twice to die.
Once the heron, to set his path.
Twice the heron, to name him true.
Once the dragon, for remembrance lost.
"Twice the dragon, for the price he must pay"

Twice dawns the day when his blood is shed.
Once for mourning, once for birth.
Red on black, The dragons blood stains the

In the Pit of Doom shall his blood free men

All the characters assume that it means Rand will die. Rand assumes he
will die.

Now me, I'm kind of a bastard.

I *WANT* him to die. Rand al'Thor MUST DIE.
He's a nice enough fellow, sure, but this story deserves a only
half-happy ending. Tragedy they call it.

I agree. Rand's death would provide a very emotionally impacting end to
this epic. I think his death is necessary for the completion of the
circle of life/death/resurrection RJ has established.
However, (and this is certainly not the concrete reasoning most of you
seem to rely so heavily on) I've developed a very keen sense of
storytelling in the 21 years I've spent watching and working with
movies. Rand and LTT are going to part ways, but I doubt Rand dies. It
would be to upsetting to the fans. I love RJ as much as the rest of
you, but in this case, I'm afraid he's going to cop-out.
Again, just a hunch, but I'm pretty good at these things.

I've gotta agree. All the foreshadowing says Rand's gonna die. RJ began
to sleaze his way out with Min's viewing of two people inside Rand,
parting company. Rand should die, just because that's the way the series
is being set up, and that's the way RJ is leaning, but he probably
won't, because unhappy endings don't belong in a fantasy story.

No,His Blood will be spilt but He will not die.I reckon that Nynaeve will
be able to Heal him at the last moment.I think Lews Therin will be
released from Rand.Rand is easily my favourite character as he copes with
far more responsibility than any of the others and manages to stay sane
because he has to.

BTW How many books are going to be in the series?

Is everyone forgetting Nicola's fortelling in Lord of Chaos?
"The lion sword, the dedicated spear, she who sees beyond. Three on a boat,
and he who is dead yet lives. The great battle done, but the world not done
with battle. The land divided by the return, and the guardians balance the
servants. The future teeters on the edge of a blade."

My interpretation so far is that this is a mirror of one of Min's original
viewings, the one where she learns three women will love Rand al'Thor, she saw
three woman on a funeral barge. The three women are Elayne, Aviendha and Min.
The great battle done- Tarmon Gai'don has ended. "return"- The "Day of
Return" all darkfriends hope for. Guardians and Sevants are Aes Sedai and
Asha'man.

RJ has said that he has a surprise ending, which means Rand won't die. I

Given the way everyone seems to feel right now, a surprise ending *will*
be Rand's death. Are you the sort of person who wears loose jeans and
nose rings to be unique?

Come on. A surprise ending could mean *thousands* of things. Rand could
die, Taim could die, Demandred could defect, Egwene could end up marrying
Galad after all, Gawyn could run screaming at Rand with a sword only to
trip over a stone and stab himself in the head, etc etc. There's *no*
way you can guess what this surprise ending means. (Why else do you
think RJ would tell us? He's been very careful not to spoil anything
about the next several books for us.)

Well, it's always been pretty clear to me. For those of you who've read
the Belgariad, remember Durnik? The man with Two Lives? He lived
twice, and eventually will die twice. In the same way, Rand will die at
Shayol Ghul, spilling his blood, etc., and be resurrected. Or have you
missed the Jesus-Christ symbolism behind him?

And it's pretty clear that it has to be his blood and not the Aiel or
anybody elses. First of all, Rand is kind of a no-man. He's not tied
strongly to anyone, not to the Aiel, not to the TR, and not to Andor.
So no one can truly be called his blood. The only blood he could
possibly shed is his own. And the foreshadowing concerning the gaping
hole in his side is a little too strong to merely discount the
possibility of rand himself dying.

I forget where this idea came from, but "his blood" could also refer
to a relative, i.e., someone who shares his bloodlines. Rand has an
uncle and a half-brother running around- could one of them be the one
to lubricate the dirt at Shayol Ghul?

He's also got countless other distant relatives. The Aiel could be
construed to be relatives as well, since they're "his" people; you know,
the people o' the Dragon. That also pans out with the Aiel prophecies
about a remnant of a remnant being saved; possibly just Rand himself. Of
course, they're little proof one way or another.

> > Or have you missed the Jesus Christ symbolism behind him?

> OK, I'll bite- if Rand is a Christ figure, who's the Antichrist?

Hmm... I don't know. The symbolism fails dismally when you assume that
the Creator is the Christian God, and the Dark One the Devil. Try this
out: Rand is God, Demandred is Lucifer. #1 and #2 before the War of the
Shadow, now #1 on both sides; Demandred resented Rand because he was
always better, so he figured he'd win by being #1 on the other side.

I guess you could call Bela the Antichrist. We know she's a Darkfriend,
despite what RJ says.
