"Late Show's" Biff Henderson falls off stage and into hospital after
David Letterman throws him ball

Biff! Bam! Boom!

Imitating Super Bowl hero Drew Brees, rifle-armed David Letterman
fired a pass to his show's stage manager Monday that sent him to the
hospital.

"I caught it," Biff Henderson declared weakly after snagging the
spiral and falling off the stage almost into in the laps of stunned
"Late Show" audience members.

The crew were killing time, waiting for Brees, the New Orleans Saints
quarterback, to arrive and tossing the pigskin when Henderson, 63,
took his tumble.

Before he knew Henderson was hurt, Letterman quipped, "I can smell a
lawsuit."

But he turned grim when Henderson complained he couldn't move one of
his knees.

"They cut the cameras and and the band played for about 20 minutes and
that's how we all knew it was serious." said Sheva Oliver, 29, from
Rockland County.

Medics soon arrived and wheeled Henderson out, strapped to a gurney.

"We all cheered for him as he left," she said.

"Dave looked upset," said Fred Kaplan, 63 from The Bronx. "Biff looked
alert and waved to us from the gurney."

Brees, who was hung up in Lincoln Tunnel traffic, arrived as Henderson
ambulance was being put into the ambulance to Roosevelt Hospital.

Henderson was treated in the ER Monday night and released.

Back inside the Ed Sullivan theater, as things settled down, one fan
said Letterman told the crowd: "The show must go on."

And it did.

Talk about taking one for the team!

With the delay they were able to get Drew on first.

Frankly, some of the lame on-set "Biff" shticks should have probably
been put to pasture years ago. Hope the old fella's alright, but
enough already. Let him continue the location coverage/interview stuff
if you must.

It was also very dark when they put Biff in the meat wagon.

It does seem that they were switched.

I noticed that, too. It was pitch dark. I'd never noticed that water
tower, but I opened one of the pictures of a Tony / Stephanie
billboard I took in 2007, and there it was.

Maybe they swapped the two episodes because Drew Brees was extremely
late getting into New York. I wonder how hard that would be to do.

Couldn't that explain why Josh Turner wasn't bumped to Friday?

Confirmed -- Monday's broadcast was taped after Friday's taping to
allow for Brees' late arrival. DDY be right.

How old *is* Biff, anyway?...this is the kind of horseplay I'd expect on one of
those "youth" shows, not in a bunch of seasoned television veterans....

Where I used to work, any such injury-prone activities were classified as
"team-building exercises"....r

I got nervous when Dave was tossing the ball to Bill Scheft - he just
had his hip replaced a year ago.

The problem wasn't how many years Biff has lived.

The problem was how many feet there are of stage.

I got nervous when Dave went out for a pass. I think he realized that
running down those steps to catch a ball wasn't the brightest idea
because he did slip a little.

Maybe...who doesn't want anyone to get hurt!

Drew Should've tossed him a real pass. One of those full throttle
thread the needle thingies square in the solar plexus
would've............made for some great TV? Agreed, it was pointless
hijynx, and Biff paid the price.

Oh for chrissake...Anyone of any age could have slipped off the stage
and gotten hurt. The fall had noting to do with age.

What, someone hits 60 and they should just sit quietly in a wheelchair?

I'm starting to get slightly amused 'cause it sounds like things got
too rough in the assisted living home. Anyway, why must the show go on
if joints are creaking and hips are being replaced?

Because watching guys playing canasta isn't THAT entertaining. But it
is safer. Hope Biffkins is okay and doesn't suffer anything chronic
from that darn fall. His wife must be fit to be tied.

Um, speaking as a 66 year old who still rides motorcycles, plays touch
football, climbs rocks, and backpacks; that's utter nonsense.

18 year-old kids in perfect condition sometimes injure themselves
playing toss-and-catch, and the fact that Biff missed his footing on
the steps and fell down after catching the ball doesn't mean that
everyone over 60 should automatically be confined to a wheelchair.

It could just as easily have happened to someone much younger.

Biff probably had no say in the matter. Dave Says, "go out", Biff has
to go out, even if it's down slippery steps to catch a pass on weak
legs. Nice move dave. Save this one for the next anniversary
highlights reel. (Nothing more pathetic than oldsters trying to act
young and actively hip; did I say "hip"? as in "hip
replacement".......)

They should do like Craig does, shoot the performance anyway and save

Oh, you are full of crap. No employee has to do anything they don't
want to do especially if the show was already delayed/chopped up
because of the late arrival of one of the guests.
