I know the show actually helped shoot down his appeal, as he never actually
admitted murdering his girlfriend until he called the show. They also took away
his walkman after he called into the show.

NEWS BRIEFS
Graffiti painters needed for tagging coverup work
In a tribute to Tom Sawyer, the Santa Clara County Parks and
Recreation Department last week announced an opportunity to whitewash
over graffiti on public structures.
The activity is free, but participants must be at least 16 years old.
Painters will cover up tags on structures in Vasona Lake County Park
and along the Los Gatos Creek Trail. The department will provide
paint, brushes and training tips to friendly volunteers who would like
to spend at least one or two hours a month spreading paint over
graffiti. For more information or to apply, call volunteer coordinator
Chris Crockett at 354-6583.
Lee Elmore Newman gets 25 years to life for killing girlfriend
Lee Elmore Newman, 28, was sentenced April 11 to 25 years to life in
prison for murdering his estranged girlfriend, Debra Eberle, on Jan.
21, 1994, in her Los Gatos apartment.
Newman pleaded guilty to murdering his girlfriend and selling the
contents of her house to pay debts he owed for cocaine.
San Francisco police stopped Newman six days after the murder, when
they caught him driving Eberle's car.
Newman's victim obtained a restraining order against him a week before
the murder. He had previously been arrested for assaulting her and
threatening to kill her.
Los Gatos Creek Bridge purchase
has been delayed
The Los Gatos Town Council put off until its May 6 meeting the
decision of whether to purchase a new bridge for Los Gatos Creek
Trail.
The prefabricated, 130-foot-by-10-foot truss bridge would cost about
$160,000 altogether and would be installed about 150 feet north of
Lark Avenue.
Santa Clara County has already agreed to pay $112,117 of the cost.
