Why do they have to keep remaking films that are within memory of being
made the first time?

In this case, shouldn't it really be "making Starship Trooper", since
everyone seems to think the original was more some other story.

If they film a movie based on the Heinlein novel it'll be a "Make," not
a "Remake," since the previous movie of the same name was not based on
the book in any sense other than a handful of character names.

We may need a new word describing the process of doing the initial
"Make" second.

Does this mean we can look for a good "remake" of "The Day After
Tomorrow" and "Glory Road" in the near future, too? (I'd love to see a
good film presentation of GR.)

I'd love to see GR made into a feature film!! I don't know if all the
different references to other works would make it though

Remember, some time back there was a film "Glory Road". I seem to recall
speculation here about it, then it turned out to have nothing to do with
Heinlein. But, it really had nothing to do with Heinlein, just a
coincidence of title name.

What would make a great fluff movie that would still be able to keep the
Heinleinian core of its material would be "The Menace from Earth." The
CGI time is right for this thing and it practically writes itself.

And it is often easier and gives better results to expand a short story than to try to get a novel into a film.

Hey! It had a reference to the Heinlein story. The film was about a
basketball team, and Oscar Gordon played basketball on his college
team before going into the army. (It's at least as closely connected
as Verhoeven's abomination was. <G>)

What worries me is what kind of padding they'd use to turn a short
story into a full-length movie. I could easily see the Heinlein story
getting totally lost in the fluff.

I never saw it. After it clearly wasn't the Heinlein story (not even in a
Starship Troopers way) I wasn't interest, especially since it was about
sports.

It's this attitude that'll get Heinlein shoved to the back of the bus
and eventually forgotten. The "Heinlein story" is absolutely nothing
new; it's a billion previous stories with similarly shaved-off serial
numbers but it's set on the Moon and there, folks can fly. Flying on the
Moon's what sells.

If you want the full "Heinlein treatment," go read the story just like
you can always read SST if you miss the obligatory didactic hand holding.

Agreed.

Been reading TheMaster since the dark ages....

But the most lyric, to me, scene in his entire output is the flying in the air plenum.

It still sneakes into my dreams....

A minor change, there was probably some reason that made it work better in
the movie as basketball.

Football, Basketball, ran Track, and Fenced.
His primary ticket was football as a running back.

IIRC, Oscar "swept the gym" meaning he participated in several different sports. Football and basketball were mentioned, also IIRC. Plus fencing, and some others I don't recall.

Oscar was primarily a football player, but after football season he
"swept the gym" in basketball, track and fencing.

"Sweeping the gym" being a euphemism for being given a minimal-effort
job that allowed him to spend most of his time practicing--basically
being paid to be an athlete.
