Hi Carlos,

I have a concern that your site's entry page states this:

"Welcome to DegreeDiscussion, the Internet's premier site for the
discussion of all issues concerning degree programs, academic
institutions, credit by examination, and distance learning."

But yours is a new site without an established style of moderation
holding only one post so far-- a welcome message from someone
identified as "Administrator" whose profile gives no other information
about his/her identity or experience with higher education issues.

Perhaps things will go well and your site will become a leading source
of information concerning higher education programs. However, at the
moment it is not accurate to describe it with such (commendable)
enthusiasm as "the Internet's premier site for the discussion of...."
Would you consider changing the welcome splash page to reflect your
hopes and enthusiasms, rather than descibing degreediscussion.com as if
it were an already-established site with a known style of moderation
and participation by its members?

best of luck,
George Gollin

Carlos,

I see that the DegreeDiscussion.com domain is registered through a
proxy service that hides the identity of the actual orgnization
managing the domain:

Domains by Proxy, Inc.
DomainsByProxy.com
15111 N. Hayden Rd., Ste 160, PMB 353
Scottsdale, Arizona 85260
United States.

That does not inspire confidence in your site. As you probably know,
proxy registrations are often used by the operators of diploma mills to
hide their identities.

I would encourage you to make the domain's registration information
public, rather than keeping it hidden.

Utter tosh.

DomainsByProxy.com is provided and owned by Godaddy.com.

I am sorry that you have taken exception to our use of the term
"premier," Professor Gollin, as it was chosen very carefully.

Among the definitions of "premier" is the performance of a work for
the first time. But as far as being judged as "first in rank or
degree" (another definition), considering the state of affairs at
many of the other forums, we stand by our assessment (or perhaps we are
just being prescient). ;)

In any event, if you find the home page (which is obviously still under
construction) offensive or disturbing in any way, you can link directly
to the forums at http://www.degreediscussion.com/forums

Hi again,

You used "premier" as a noun ("...the premier of an Internet site
for...") rather than an adjective ("the Internet's premier site
for...).

Since your site has no information footprint yet, I think your
assessment of it is premature. I do not find the splashy entry
offensive or disturbing, just misleading. This might be due to your
enthusiasm, and nothing more. But I wish you luck!

Why do you have the administrative and technical contacts in the domain
registration listed as "private?"

Although our Web site does not yet have an informational footprint, I
assure you that the individuals involved do. And if the worst that can
be said about our site is that we are a tad exuberant about its
prospects, then, in comparison to most of the other distance education
sites, we probably do indeed rank as "premier." lol

As we are very much in our infancy and still under construction, your
feedback concerning our site is very welcomed though. Also, thank you
for your best wishes.

Hmm. I would've imagined that you are among the very last, Professor
Gollin, that needed to be reminded that the Internet is full of
"psychos." ;)

The reason that we have chosen to guard our privacy at this time is
that, given that the principals of DegreeDiscussion are unabashedly
committed to educational excellence, we thoroughly expect those
involved with diploma mills and substandard schools to target us.
