I have a Direct TV receiver (non DVR) with Composite Output (no HDMI)
and a HDCP enabled LCD monitor with VGA and DVI-D inputs.

Is there a way to connect Direct TV output to the LCD monitor DVI-D or
VGA without fancy gadgets and software. I would preferably not want
to have to turn ON the computer to watch direct TV, just use the LCD
monitor for both computer and direct tv output (VGA for computer and
DVI-D for Direct TV).

Thoughts?

Composite is analog and DVI is digital, so right there you have a problem
that can only be solved by a fancy gadget, if one even exists. It would be
cheaper to get a monitor that has both composite and VGA inputs.

a composite to VGA converter can be had for less than USD50.

Maybe I am confused, but where did he say he needs composite input? He wants
to hook up the digital output (DVI or HDMI) from the DirecTV receiver to the
DVI input of the monitor. So long as he as the right cable (or a HDMI to DVI
converter for an HDMI cable), wouldn't that work?

You are confused! He said his Directv receiver doesn't have
hdmi outputs and therefore has to use the composite output,
which of course, is analog.

Are you willing to use a gadget as long as it's not fancy?

Not sure how good a job it does in the conversion. Also, be sure to pay
attention to the resolutions it supports.
