Shelia Davis Lawrence assails accusations as 'outrageous lies'

By George E. Condon Jr. and Marcus Stern
COPLEY NEWS SERVICE

January 23, 1998

WASHINGTON -- Shelia Davis Lawrence, widow of Coronado hotelier M. Larry
Lawrence, yesterday was drawn into the controversies enveloping the White
House as questions emerged about the nature of her relationship with
President Clinton.

Lawrence's testimony is being sought by lawyers for Paula Corbin Jones, the
former Arkansas state employee who is suing the president for alleged
sexual harassment.

Jones' lawyers, hoping to establish a pattern of sexual conduct by Clinton,
have cast a wide net for any women even rumored to have been sexually
linked to him, seeking to tarnish the credibility of his denials.

Clearly stung by published suggestions that she had an extramarital affair
with the president, an angry Lawrence last night stoutly denied that she
has ever had any sexual relations with Clinton and blamed his enemies for
what she called "outrageous lies."

"I did not," she said in a telephone interview. "It is an outrageous,
scurrilous accusation that is completely untrue."

Lawrence, 36, described her relationship with the president as one of a
political supporter, adding: "I would be flattered to think ... that both
my husband and I are friends with the president and the first lady."

The president has previously described himself as a friend of the
Lawrences, both of whom he met while still Arkansas governor. In his first
years in the White House, he invited the Coronado couple to the White House
to stay overnight and fly on Air Force One. He also attended a birthday
dinner for Shelia Lawrence at a Georgetown restaurant in 1993.

In 1994, the first family vacationed in the Lawrence home in Coronado and
the president has stayed at the Hotel del Coronado during other visits.

White House press secretary Mike McCurry was asked yesterday about
Lawrence's emergence as a possible witness in the case. But he denied any
knowledge of her being subpoenaed, saying, "I don't know whether that's
true and have no reaction."

M. Larry Lawrence, an owner of the Hotel del Coronado, Democratic
contributor and ambassador to Switzerland, himself was, in death, the
center of national controversy. He was buried in Arlington National
Cemetery in January 1996 on the basis of what later was revealed to be a
phony record of having served in the merchant marine during World War II.

Shelia Lawrence had been vacationing in the Bahamas since that controversy
forced her to move her husband's body to a San Diego cemetery early last
month.

Lawrence declined to discuss reports that Jones' lawyers are trying to
subpoena her, saying, "I'd rather not talk about the legal aspects at this
time. There are other far more important issues here."

But a spokesman for her said Lawrence has not yet received any subpoena.
"She hasn't been served," said the aide who asked not to be identified.
"She's been on a long-planned vacation."

If she receives a subpoena, he said, her lawyers "are prepared to offer an
affidavit" stating that she has no information or useful testimony relevant
to Jones' sexual harassment case.

Asked when she might return to San Diego, where she could be served with a
subpoena, the spokesman replied: "We don't know that. I haven't asked her."

Lawyers for Jones declined to return many requests for comment about
Lawrence Wednesday and yesterday. Independent counsel Kenneth Starr, who
has sparked controversy over the past year by attempting to interview women
linked by rumor to Clinton, also refused to comment.

Lawrence was eager, though, to defend her reputation, lashing out at those
who have spread the accusations against her. She dismissed the rumors that
have been spread by what she considers innocent occurrences -- inviting the
president to her home and hugging him upon his arrival in town during a
June 1996 visit.

"That is so ridiculous," she said, laughing. "What is unusual about two
friends greeting each other hugging?

"When my husband and I greeted him, we hugged him, too. Larry hugged him. I
hugged him. That's what you do when you greet someone that you care about,
that you consider a friend that you haven't seen in a while."

She defended having Clinton in her house and said it gave no occasion for
sexual contact.

"Larry and I were working together in his campaign and were friends, and he
was coming into town to campaign and did stay at the house while we both
were there," she said. "What's wrong with that?"

She added, "Every time that I have been there that he stayed at the house,
Larry and I both have been there."

She called the allegations "very disappointing and very painful and
disheartening" and blamed "people with different political agendas trying
to harm the president, the first lady and everyone remotely associated"
with them.

Lawrence said she has not talked to the president any time recently and
could not recall the last time she talked with him.

She predicted that the current atmosphere will drive good people out of
politics. "It will be very, very difficult in the future of our country to
get good, talented, decent people to expose themselves . . . to these types
of lies and criticisms and unfairness."

But she said she will not back out of the public arena. "In fact, I may
quadruple my effort," she said almost defiantly.

Lawrence aimed particular ire at conservative columnist Arianna Huffington,
who distributed a column this week airing what the writer acknowledged were
but rumors.

In the column, Huffington contended that Larry Lawrence was appointed
ambassador to Switzerland primarily because he "turned a blind eye toward
Clinton's affair with his wife."

Huffington also raised questions about Clinton's appointment of Shelia
Lawrence as a U.S. special representative to the World Conservation Union
in Geneva at the same time her husband was serving in Bern.

"Arianna has descended into the bowels of indecency with her outrageous
lies and accusations against me," an angry Lawrence said.

In a separate statement issued yesterday, Lawrence pledged to "pursue every
legal action possible" against the columnist.

"Arianna Huffington has never contacted me or given me an opportunity to
respond to these lies because she has never been interested in the truth.
She has shown reckless disregard for the truth. . . . She has done
irreparable harm to my reputation and my husband's memory," she said.

Huffington said every allegation of an affair by Bill Clinton has been met
with a similarly strong denial, so "this is not a surprising response." She
said she left half a dozen messages for Lawrence seeking her comment.

The columnist said she researched the allegations for weeks and talked to
"dozens of people" who believe Shelia Lawrence had sex with Clinton,
including members of the Lawrence household staff and close associates of
the family.

"If all these accusations are untrue, as she is saying, why won't she allow
them to serve the subpoena and deny them under oath?" Huffington said.

Many of her sources were required to sign confidentiality agreements before
going to work for the Lawrences, Huffington said, and others "are very
afraid of her."

I thought it was NBC who confirmed the affair between Bill and Shiela.

Arianna Huffington is a Bitch and she hates Democrats with a passion. She is
getting back at them because her husband spent millions in a political race
which he lost and as far as Arianna Huffington is concerned its "Pay back
time." I find her a very disgusting woman and also an insult to decent women.

Lucile, Lucile--where does this "hate, Bitch, disgusting" talk come
from? You're beginning to sound like a very frightened old bat.

But, please tell me, who in hell asked for your opinion?

Too late, old girl, Bill did the deed, and he is paying for it.
BTW, you haven't answered my question--doesn't this bother
you, as a mother?

What comes around goes around. The Democrats have held political sway
for the past 50 years in most of the country. We've seen the result.
They created a Frankenstein's monster with the sexual harassment
charge, crushing a lot of people. Now that it is being used against
them, all of a sudden they're all solemn and serious, wanting to "get
back to the nation's business" and "look at the nature of the
charges."

Serves 'em right and more to 'em, I say.

The only difference between the Democrats and the Republicans is that
the Republicans will take about a week longer to drive us completely
communist. They are like a pit bull and a Doberman: one goes for
your throat, the other goes for your crotch. At least the Republicans
let me keep a LITTLE bit more of the money I earn.

But screw both parties. We need a third party so we can have TWO
parties, because right now we've got a two-headed rattlesnake. People
who blindly support either party deserve what they get, and boy, are
they getting right now. The only problem is, millions of decent,
law-abiding Americans have to suffer because these childish, immature
people are playing their little games of power. They don't "care" --
unless it's about control over our lives.

A third party just ain't gonna happen. The Libertarians demonstrate that
every election day.

What's needed is to reform *both* existing parties. Not pretty, not
glamorous, but the only viable solution.
