LONDON - Britain, home to the MI6 spy agency that inspired the
James Bond stories and the billion-dollar film franchise, has
been wrestling this week with one of the country's strangest
real-life spy mysteries in a generation, one that has become
known popularly as the case of the spy in the bag.

His naked body had been in the bag for a week before it was
discovered, so badly decomposed that the police and pathologists
have been unable to determine whether he was murdered in what
his family's lawyer has suggested to the court was a plot by
others skilled in the "dark arts" of spy work.

That theory has played prominently here, with Mr. Williams
depicted alternately as a victim of Russian secret service hit
men

While the police and MI6 officials have refused to rule out
those theories, they suggested a more likely but mundane
explanation: that although the day had long passed when the
agency dictated agents' lifestyles, he was leading a doubly
secret life, as a licensed MI6 field agent and as a sexual
fantasist

Investigators also discovered that he had more than $30,000
worth of women's high-fashion clothing, including Christian
Louboutin shoes and Christian Dior dresses, in carefully packed
bags in his apartment. Much of the clothing was brand new, but
some of the 26 pairs of shoes had been worn, and a bright orange
woman's wig was found over the back of a chair, along with a
pair of newly pressed men's underpants, in Mr. Williams's
otherwise sparsely decorated but conspicuously tidy bedroom.

Alan M. Turing, the mathematician whom many regard as the father
of modern computer science, known for leading the team that
cracked Nazi Germany's military ciphers in World War II,
committed suicide in 1954 by eating a cyanide-laced apple after
being convicted of homosexuality, then a criminal offense. The
so-called Cambridge spies of the 1950s, several of whom fled to
the Soviet Union, had homosexual liaisons as young men.

Other MI6 officials have said some of his work involved close
contact with American spy agencies, and visits to the United States.

dead before she'd had a chance to understand what was happening

Of course, if that was all we were doing in France, it would
have been quite harmless, though most unnecessary, but there was
much more to what was afoot. The commanding officer when I left
had put us on a war footing when he came, having someone in the
office 24/7 to help prevent the Russkies from stealing our

The big problem for Britain with Gareth was allowing him to

he arrived at Cheltentham's GCHQ. He learned, it seems, of the
Foreign Office's communications with its embassy in Moscow about
the activities of the GRU's Colonel Sergei Skripal, the spy who
MI6 had developed in the mid-1990s to expose its spies sent into
Europe, and Russia's military plans in case of war, and
apparently told Putin's people about it.

By this time, Williams was more interested in disclosing more
counter-terrorist officers, and their intelligence collecting
techniques as he worked away at Fort Meade with NSA to catch an
alleged Russian sleeper cell of spies that it had discovered

Williams was quite confused by this rigmarole, but as Houghton's
trial was stretched out to make sure that his own spying was
successfully terminated, he began to act again in Russia's
interest. Just after the Manhattan 11 were arrested, and charged
with spying, NSA feared that he might come to their defense

Unfortunately, this explanation and future changes were far too
late to save Williams who was by then on his way back to the
States, trying to obtain more information about the entrapment
of the ten Russians, apparently in the hope of improving his
position with Moscow

The most interesting aspects of his murder were the lengths that
the securocrats went to in order to best hide his poisoning, and
his killing so that it could be so clouded with rumor that most
interest in what had really happened would be lost. Clearly they
had complete access to his Rodina apartment or they would have
reported his unexplained visit by that couple at the end of June.
The fact they didn't showed that they were hoping to implicate
the Russians in the murder - what some of the disinformation
after the discovery of his body was intended to achieve

The only trouble was that the police did find those security
videos of him entering the Holland Park tube station, and
walking along the front of Harrods. The photographs clearly show
that he, so sickly that he is hardly recognizable, was suffering
jaundice from the toxins of the poisonous mushroom, apparently
amanita phalloides

from some form of suffocation or was killed with an undetected

Another pathologist, Dr Richard Shepherd, said the spy got into
the bag himself as it would be 'extremely difficult' to place a
'floppy' dead body in such a neat position.

The inquest had heard how it would have been almost impossible
for Mr Williams to lock himself inside the bag with a small
brass travel padlock. Two experts tried more than 400 times to
seal themselves inside an identical bag but were unable to do so,
saying escapologist 'Houdini would struggle'.
