MEB-VM Aflash error "CAN'T FIND BIOS' HOOK".?

Please help.
MB short of HD short appears to have taken out HD. Replaced. New HD boots
ok into W98 but lags 1 minute in bios read stage before finding drives. It
finally boots using "default configuration". Reset bios by pulling
battery. Same. Prepared boot disk with FORMAT A:/S command. Copied AFLASH
utility and new bios v8001a. Booted to command prompt with new boot disk
and tried to run "aflash". Tries to run, then stops with error message
"CAN'T FIND SYSTEM BIOS' HOOK". I cannot run aflash, therefore cannot
flash new or old bios. Apparently the bad bios now there does not
work, defaulting to some basic standard bios. The old damaged bios
apparently cannot extend some "hook" to facilitate running aflash and bios
upgrade.
Is there any work-around to this problem?
