I am running Windows XP, using Internet Explorer 6 and Outlook Express 6. I
am using AV software AVG version 6.0.365

The AVG Control Center says that the email scanner checks MICROSOFT OUTLOOK
for incoming and outgoing messages. And the AVG system says that the feature
is operational on my machine. But nowhere do I see anything that says that
AVG protects a system running OUTLOOK EXPRESS as the email client.

I have checked the boxes in AVG requesting that incoming and outgoing mail
be certified but again, I have no indication that my email is being scanned.

Does anyone have any experience with this please?

I've wondered the same things. I do know that AVG won't let me attach an
infected
file to email. I tried it with the Eicar test file. Also, AVG warns me if I
*save* an
infected attachment. So it is checking files attached and saved. But I see
no
evidence that AVG detects infections as they come in, only when attempting
to save
them to disk. I am presuming it would check an attachment one tries to open
without saving
first and warn it if infected, but I don't open before saving and scanning.

Hi,
I'm sending this from work which has an older Macafee. At home I use AVG and
below is what it inserts into outgoing and similar at the end of incoming mail.
That's using outlook not outlook express under win98. At the bottom right of
your screen there is an AVG icon try a right click of hack from there.

Regards Ian.

Hi, I had the same problem with Outlook/XP. The AVG icon all over
sudden disappeared from my icon bar in Outlook (the AVG extension was
still in the Add-In manager!) and though all email options were
enabled in AVG, no email checking was done any more, even the
footnotes did not appear any longer though enabled. De-installed AVG
and re-installed it but nothing changed. Email function was not
working and refused to get working again. Sent a message to Grisoft
but only received a robot-answer. As I'm using the freeware version, I
did not expect any support and decided to re-install XP (yes..I
decided to go the tough way but I want to have a clean system again)
and now everything is working properly again. If anybody knows the
reason of this strange AVG behaviour, please let us know as I have no
plans to re-install XP again whenever AVG is not supporting my in- and
outgoing emails any more. In that case, I'll look for another AV
product.

I've got the following reply from Grisoft (though I'm using the free
version!!!):

Dear Sir/Madam,

please try to start this command and check if this will help: regsvr32
avgxch32.dll The response should be similar to "DllRegisterServer
succeeded".

Best regards,

As I have already re-installed Windows/XP, I cannot give it a try. Any
volunteers to try this? (providing you are suffering the same
problem).

Excuse me for butting in. I recently installed the free version of
AVG in a Win XP Home machine using Outlook Express 6. I saw "Outlook
Express 5 plug in" in the email section of Control Center and wondered
what it's all about.

Is the plug in needed with OE6? What does it do?

Thanks
