yard (where the winters see 10 below in January) that's at least 80
years old. It blooms like the bejeebers and always did except for about
10 years when the sun was blocked by a willow. When the willow got
blown over during a blizzard, the lilac bounced right back.

i used to chop vegetables and stir 20+ gallon vats of marinara with a stainless steel oar, and stuff mushrooms, and save the stems for au-jus, and fry 20 trays of bacon in a convection oven and almost slip on the slippy grease that slopped out of the bucket accidentally, and crack a case and a half of eggs for scrambled eggs and strain out the shells and scramble them, and chop a case of onions and a case of peppers, and and tray up 50 trays of chicken and properly smear Whirl on it and season it for someone's wedding or other function coming up next weekend, and scrub pots when the pot washer guy wanted to go huntin' or fishin', and cover for some of the ppl in the dishwashing crew, mop up the floors and clean toilets at the end of my shift every day, and somehow end up working on a demolition crew in the dining hall one summer, and also made the best eggs to order you could have ever had, since i had lots of practice in over 3+ years there - for no more than $7.50/hr. then i graduated high school and went to college to broaden my horizons from pastoral two-street catholic college town.

There are some lilacs out on the island that get plenty of salt spray.
They're small but they bloom pretty well.

They're a little tart for eating straight up but they make good jam and
wine. Around here the birds plant them and poison ivy together but you
can get seeds and dodge the poison ivy.
