I talked my father in law into a new 2001 V70 XC. Both my wife and I
have Volvos and I stand by their quality 100 percent (except for the
fuel pump relays on the 740 :). I was surprised to see that there is
no key access to the rear hatch, or even a release button on the dash
for the car... needless to say... here's what I am perplexed about...

The rear hatch will not open. Even when all the doors are unlocked,
and you press the hatch button on the remote, the rear hatch still
cannot be opened. I crawled in the back, and checked the fuse, and it
was ok. What seems strange to me, is that when you press the hatch
release button, it doesn't seem to make any noise like it is even
attempting to unlatch.

I had heard that there was a problem with linkage rods coming off that
connected the solenoid in the hatch to the actual locking mechanism,
but I don't even hear a solenoid move.

Does anyone know if there is a relay that is used on the 2001 XC in
addition to the fuse in the rear fuse block? Or even where the wiring
harness connects into the rear hatch assembly is there a junction
point that may have come loose? I am thinking that it may be
disconnect on the wiring... because the rear dome light does not come
on either. I am hoping that I can figure this out without droppign the
car off for a day at the dealership.

Thanks to all who can assist,

Ted

Is your father-in-law still happy with his son-in-law and the new car?
Just because you had good luck with the older Volvos does not
automatically mean the new models will be just as good. They very well
many be better, but then they could have enough problems to earn a
different reputation. A few others have had nothing but problems with the
older Volvos and are very happy with the new models. I drove the new
Volvos and talked to the mechanics who work on the cars every day. Their
advice was to avoid the new models if you wanted to keep the car for more
than four years.

I don't know about the V70XC, but at least on the S60 you have to press
the hatch button on the remote twice to open. The manual says you should
press it twice slowly to open the hatch. Still, you should be able to
open it from the outside.

If that doesn't work you can use the ordinary key to open the hatch, at
least on the S60. There's a cover of some sort which must be removed
first, check the manual for the car.
