Discarded Decorations
Videotape Contradicts John Kerry’s Own Statements Over Vietnam Medals
By Brian Ross and Chris Vlasto
ABCNEWS.com

April 26— Contradicting his statements as a candidate for president,
Sen. John Kerry claimed in a 1971 television interview that he threw
away as many as nine of his combat medals to protest the war in
Vietnam.

"I gave back, I can't remember, six, seven, eight, nine medals," Kerry
said in an interview on a Washington, D.C., news program on WRC-TV
called Viewpoints on Nov. 6, 1971, according to a tape obtained by
ABCNEWS.

Throughout his presidential campaign, Kerry has denied that he threw
away any of his medals during an anti-war protest in April 1971.

Calling it a "phony controversy" instigated by the Republican party,
Kerry said on Good Morning America today that he has always accurately
said what took place. "I threw my ribbons. I didn't have my medals. It
is very simple."

He also said he — and the military — didn't make a distinction between
medals and ribbons. "We threw away the symbols of what our country
gave us for what we had gone through," he said.

And in an interview with ABCNEWS' Peter Jennings last December, he
said it was a "myth."

But Kerry told a much different story on Viewpoints. Asked about the
anti-war veterans who threw their medals away, Kerry said "they
decided to give them back to their country."

Kerry was asked if he gave back the Bronze Star, Silver Star and three
Purple Hearts he was awarded for combat duty as a Navy lieutenant in
Vietnam. "Well, and above that, [I] gave back the others," he said.

The statement directly contradicts Kerry's most recent claims on the
disputed subject to the Los Angeles Times last Friday. "I never ever
implied that I did it, " Kerry told the newspaper, responding to the
question of whether he threw away his medals in protest.

"I'm proud of my medals. I always was proud of them," he told Jennings
in December, adding that he had only thrown away his "ribbons" and the
medals of two other veterans who could not attend the protest.

Flip Flop?

The disputed incident happened 33 years ago this past weekend, on
April 23, 1971, when Kerry led the group Vietnam Veterans Against the
War in a protest against the war they fought.

Many veterans were seen throwing their medals and ribbons over the
fence in front of the U.S. Capitol. The Boston Globe and other
newspapers reported that Kerry was among these veterans.

"In a real sense, this administration forced us to return our medals
because beyond the perversion of the war, these leaders themselves
denied us the integrity those symbols supposedly gave our lives,"
Kerry said the following day.

But in 1984, when he first ran for the U.S. Senate, Kerry revealed he
still had his medals. According to a Boston Globe report on April 15,
1984, union officials had expressed uneasiness with Kerry's candidacy
because he had thrown his medals away. Kerry acknowledged the medals
he threw away were, in fact, another soldier's medals. He reportedly
invited a union official home to personally inspect his Silver Star,
Bronze Star and three Purple Hearts, awarded for his combat duty as a
Navy lieutenant.

In the 1971 Viewpoints interview, he made no mention of the ribbons or
the medals belonging to another veteran.

And in 1988, Kerry again clarified his statement by saying he threw
out ribbons he had been awarded for three combat wounds, but not his
medals. "I was proud of my personal service and remain so," he told
the National Journal.

Eight years later in 1996, Kerry said while he did throw out his
ribbons, he didn't throw out his own medals because he "didn't have
time to go home [to New York] and get them," he told The Boston Globe.

Kerry's campaign Web site says he "is proud of the work he did to end
the war. The Nixon Administration made John Kerry one of its targets
and Republicans have been smearing him ever since. John Kerry threw
his ribbons and the medals of two veterans who could not attend the
event, and said, 'I am not doing this for any violent reasons, but for
peace and justice, and to try to make this country wake up once and
for all.'"

Yahoo news had on a bit ago that he (Kerry) is now calling on Bush to prove
his National Guard service. Hmmm - big change since his flip flop on
Clinton evading draft.

I have been wondering, did any of his (Kerry) crew get 3 combat wounds? I
heard of one seal wounded but curious about crew wounds.

Let me get this straight, about 30 years ago while Bush was high on alcohol
and cocaine, Kerry lied by saying he threw medals away when he actually kept
his medals but threw his ribbons and other anti-war veterans ribbons and
medals away. Sure that is a big deal and considering how well the war in
Iraq is going will certainly make a big difference in who I vote for.

Listen to yourselves. Who hung-back and partied while (allegedly)
serving in the Guard, while Kerry did combat duty in Vietnam?

That's right, "flight suit" George Bush. Guffaw.

I predict a new Democrat candidate will appear at a seemingly short
time before the November election. People of all political stripe
will be soooo sick of Kerry by then that anybody else will look like
a better choice AND... there will be less time left to examine the
new candidate closely.

Hey dipshit, what branch did you serve in? Why was this not a big issue
when Clinton was running agaisnt Dole? Dole had a real combat wound, not
a scratch that only required neosporin. He lost the use of his left arm
since liberating Italy. While Clinton evaded service all together, but
you voted for Clinton. So this again shows the liberal contradiction and
the hypocracy. So shut up, stick a sock in it. Of course, Dole didnt
mention "WWII" in every sentence, he wasnt looking for special treatment
or pity.

stories about what he did with his ribbons...or medals ...thirty years ago
is every bit as important as Bush stealing $700 million out of the
Afghanistan war funds to pay for preparing for the Iraq war, while lying to
the American people about all those nasty Weapons of Mass

I 'hung-back' during that time....

Joined the Navy and spent 2 years 7 months and 7 days total Foreign
and/or Sea Duty (In my case Sea Duty)...

GWB was in the same military I was. Either or both of us were subject
to call and I'm sure we would have gone.

Matter of fact, if I had not gotten out on 11 June 1961 at the end of
my enlistment...I would have traveled with USS Enterprise to Viet Nam.
My particular rating would have required me to extend my enlistment
just one month after I got out...

GWB and I did our duty...

I'd prefer to see him made president of Iraq. That is what he deserves. By
the way GW even insulted his father the other day.... something like "this
time we are not going to cut and run". I didn't realize how smart his
father was to back off till now. Although ironically, back then if we did
try to topple Saddam, we wouldn't be fighting as strong of terrorist network
as we are now so I guess they both sucked completely at foreign policy. GW
for overthrowing Saddam and perhaps his father for failure to do so. We
will never know if his father screwed up but we know GW did for sure.

Actually President Bush, like all Presidents except Washington,

Bush was no appointed, he wont the majority of electoral votes. The
count was done 5 times from independent news organizations, all had GWB
as the winner. If you'd like me to point to the constitution where is
said electoral votes not popular voted, I'd be happy to do it. The
liberals always like to amend the constitution to fit them. And Kerry

I doubt anyone but right wing Republicans consider something said about the
Vietnam war decades ago relevant. However open minded people will probably
find what Paul Brema said about the Bush administration doing nothing about
terrorism before 9/11 quite relevant. Is Bush going to call him a liar too?

Art, hindsight is always 20/20. Just suppose GWB said there was going to

Did you confuse your opinion with a news source?

Actually our great President George Bush, one of the few world
leaders that understands the world is at war with terrorist
throughout the world, was not the only President to be elected to
office without winning the popular vote. There was another
before him. That is only a diversion by the uninformed and
beside the point. The President is not elected by the popular
vote.

That looks like a veiled referenced to the idea you'll never see an
SSI check with your name on it.

Yes, and of those 24 million, you don't have clue one how many are
terrorists.

who knows?? if it's 1% then that's 240,000 people I don't want that many
people mad at us. and if we keep messing with them we can piss of their
cousins and that will add to the problem.

I don't want an SSI check, that means I went thru life broke or just making
enough. I'll try to live off my Roth. can you tell me what a SSI check
look likes.

Actually, an SSI check represents no such thing. SSI qualification
is not means tested at the high end. Dick Chainey can collect SSI if
he has 40 work quarters paid in.

Like they weren't "mad at us" already, as you simplistically call it.
What, are they "MORE mad at us" now? Oh no, not MORE mad at us!

Yes JAC, instead of being really really really mad, they are really
really really really mad now!

Isn't that hilarious? Like they needed a reason to hate us. Like we
created their hatred. They hate us. They hated us before the war,
and they hate us after the war. That is why they are called
terrorists. You don't reason with them, you don't negotiate with
them. You kill them before they kill you.
