Recent events took attention away from it there for a while, but
if you scroll down through the column (past the 20% drop off in
takings from one of Sydney's better known brothels in this wet
and stormy week we're having) it's the last item before another

Road rapture
Readers will be stunned, and, yes, saddened to learn that not
every word printed in every page of every newspaper is entirely
true. For example our investigations (which involved looking at
a Web site) have punched holes through the story in English
tabloid Weekly World News on October 9: "Granny Mistakes Sex
Dolls For Angels And Dies Trying To Follow Inflatable Floozies
Into Heaven."
The story began: "A grandmother was killed in a 16-car pile-up
when she leapt from her car in a failed attempt to ascend into
heaven" ... Geraldine Salstice jumped from her sunroof when
she saw dozens of helium-filled sex dolls escape from the back
of a truck, mistaking the event for the rapture. "He has come at
last. Thank God at the heavenly hosts He is here," the paper
reported her saying. The main problem was the story was made
up by US mischief maker Elroy Ellis, who posted it on his Web
site in August to see how long it would take for the story to
fly. Not long at all.
And its still running.

Eartha Kitt is a blues singer.
She played Catwoman on the Batman TV series.
I think that's actually her real name.

She must be my age (58) or older as she seems to have been around all
my life. I was just having a dig at the change from Georgann moniker
to Geraldine Salstice in the plagiarised article. It says on her web
site she's been making men nervous for five decades so unless she was
a child star she's older than me.

Definitely all grown up in the late 60's when she did Catwoman.

Well, at least someone is world famous for it ;-)
Do you think they'd print a correction if you asked 'em to?

I sent 'em an email just a minute ago. I'll see what they say. :-)
Congrats Elroy!!
I always know you'd hit the big time. You have such a quirky imagination
that people want to believe it just might be true....
Well done. (y)

Man-o, you need to get up with the Onion. I'll bet they could pay you
for the stuff you crank out. Unless you object to getting money for your
efforts?

Nah. I got a reply to my email to 'em, and they admitted they just
goofed up the name.

I don't object to getting paid, but places like the Onion don't accept
occasional freelance stories, and I don't really wanna become an
employee of theirs and be responsible for hammering out a certain
number of stories on some regular schedule.
