Study: Atheists are less tolerant than religious people

LÖWEN, 10 July, 2017 / 9:24 AM ( CNA Deutsch ) .-
Religious are more tolerant than atheists in terms of others' views. This is shown by a study by the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium).
The scientific study is based on interviews with 788 people of different faiths in England, France and Spain.
Although many atheists are less inclined to accept others' views, they consider themselves the most tolerant.
The religious people "seem to better integrate different views," explain the researchers of the Department of Psychology of the University.
Mentality is crucial
Filip Uzarevic, one of the authors of the study, said that there are by no means only narrow-minded people among religious people and that this study has proved that "the relationship between these two aspects depends solely on the mentality of the person."
"Surprisingly, it was the religious people who showed more openness when we measured receptivity to integrating aspects that were different or opposed to theirs," Uzarevic said.
For Dr. med. Uzarevic explains his study "Are not atheists dogmatic?" that atheism has become "the norm" in some Western countries.
He examined three aspects of mental rigidity in 445 atheists and agnostics, 255 Christians and a group of 37 Buddhists, Muslims and Jews.
The study shows that non-believers in "self-declared dogmatism" reached a lower level than religious people; in the area of "intolerance", however, the value was higher.
Uzarevic explained that the idea for this study arose because conservative and liberal groups are often open in their appearance, but public opinion describes them as narrow-minded. And vice versa: the more secular someone is, the more he is considered tolerant and open.
The study, however, proved the opposite. The investigation shows that the more someone clings to the Atheimus, the more mentally closed he is.
