I’m reminded of the frankly racist quote by one of the Johnson boys in
the epic politically incorrect movie, “Blazing Saddles”.
Quote on. “We’ll take the niggers and the chinks but we won’t take
the Irish”! “Aw what the hell, we’ll take the Irish too”. Quote off.
Bill Clarke
One of my all time favorite lines in movie history. And I'm part Irish.
I believe it was either TCM or FMC that declared Young Frankenstein to be
the funniest movie of all time, but for my money, it was Blazing Saddles,
another Mel Brooks production with Gene Wilder in a lead role. With
Richard Pryor co-writing and Slim Pickens and Harvey Corman co-starring,
how could it have missed. For what it's worth, my top 3 comedy movies
ever:
1. Blazing Saddles
2. Dr. Strangelove (also with Slim Pickens)
3. Young Frankenstein
It will be hard to beat Slim Pickens riding that bomb down. I still
get tickled thinking about it.
Bill Clarke
One more ridiculous theory. Greer got along just fine with the
President and was deeply sorry he didn't react quicker. We must all
keep in mind the shooting took place in a fraction of a minute.
Bill, a little trivia on Dr. Strangelove. The original plan was for Peter
Sellers to play the bomber pilot in addition to his three other roles in
the movie, the President, RAF officer Mandrake, and of course, Dr.
Strangelove. In the end, someone decided that was just too much and opted
for Slim Pickens for that role. A great choice. It's hard to imagine
anyone else in that role. Another bit of trivia. In the scene where Dr.
Strangelove seemingly loses control of his artificial right arm, the actor
playing the Russian ambassador couldn't keep from cracking up and they had
to do some film editing to hide that. If you watch him closely, you can
see he is having a hard time keeping a straight face.
=========well,U know, the limo came almost to a complete halt during the
shooting.More than a few witnesses reported that fact and if UR familiar
with the film of Orville Nix U can see how close the follow-up car came to
impacting the rear of the limo because of that fact.Perhaps most tellingly
against Greer are the 'nose witnesses' who uniformly reported the smell of
gunsmoke/powder down on the street where Greer was and by telling contrast
no where else.
Ritchie
Without Slim Pickins its just not the same movie. Sellers was brilliant.
So was George C. Scott, who said his role was so much fun he felt guilty
for accepting money to play the part!
Howard Donahue noticed that most witnesses who smelled gunsmoke were
either in the parade or standing on the sidewalk. To him this was
further evidence that a weapon was fired somewhere on the street. His
conclusion was a bodyguard riding in the following car behind the
Limousine accidently fired his rifle. The gunpowder from the
accidental discharge may have spread down the street as the vehicle
moved on or was blown by the wind.
