Perhaps something along the lines of the questions they ask on FB feeds for a starter: what's the first poem you remember liking as a child (and at what age)?; What's the first poem you committed to memory? Who's your favorite poet, and why?, etc.

Just for ME.

> what's the first poem you remember liking as a child (and at what age)?

As a child I liked nursery rhymes, and stuff like the "Pied Piper" and "Fox in Socks". But in terms of actually liking a poem as a poem, it would be "The Kite is a Victim" by Leonard Cohen (first read at 13).

> What's the first poem you committed to memory?

"The Lady of Shallott," by Tennyson. I was forced to do that, in Grade 5 (10 or 11). We were in a 2-room school, 5's in with 8's. The Grade 8's were studying the poem, and taking turns reciting it from memory. One guy got stuck on a *refrain* line, which exasperated me, so I blurted it out. The class all laughed, and as my punishment I was forced to memorize the whole poem and recite it the next day.

> Who's your favorite poet, and why?

Moi, of course. Why? Because I can write exactly the poem I want to read, every time - other poets come close, many a time, but it's not the same thing.

This is interesting.

Popeye and Hank Williams were my earliest poetic influences.

I'd better not. Notice how "Pendragon" decided to stay out as soon as he found I'd posted?

I'll keep this one up, of course.

It's his idea; I should let him run with it.

BTW, you didn't answer the 3rd question: You told us your favorite poet was "Poe, Whitman, Angelo and anything else that strikes my fancy" but you didn't say why.

And that does lead to another question: Who's Angelo?

And as I said, whatever suits my fancy!! Iow, what I like at the time. I'm not stuck in a time warp, gd. My taste in poetry, as with anything, is different depending on my need at the time.

Robert Frost's "Fire and Ice" and John Donne's "Death Be Not Proud" were two of the earliest poems I admired, but pointed to by Stan Lee in Marvel Comics, who often quoted poetry with the artwork of the heroes in the imagery. Another poet he used was Delmore Schwartz in Spider-Man, but I didn't know that until years later.

Poe was the first poet I could recite, back at Richards Junior High...

Of course I've been like a sponge for any of the arts for as long as I can remember, so I have multiple influences over all areas of history, as you no doubt already know.

You answered the first 2: your early likes were "Fire and Ice" and "Death be Not Proud", and your earliest recitation was a Poe poem (but you didn't give the name). You can skip those, or go into more detail; I see they're writing books in the other thread.

That leaves just question 3: who's your favorite poet, and why?

Poe's "The Bells".

It still goes through my head now, " The bells bells bells bells bells..."

I know I picked it because it would drive my Junior High (capitalize or not? I forget) teacher crazy, the other kids seemed to like it, Poe almost could be said to have created Hip Hop, perhaps.

Oh, I like that poem. It's great how, as it gets progressively more upsetting with each stanza, he keeps adding more lines and more bells.

> I know I picked it because it would drive my Junior High (capitalize or not? I forget)

(only if you're typing the school's name (or some name, like Junior High Poets Club or whatever). I guess capitalizing's OK here, as it's a stand-in for the name; but I wouldn't use it.)

A little glitter for a rainy Sunday...

I just got my order in of the re-mastered first Roxy Music album, first
listen to these songs in over 30 years. So much is made of how Bryan Ferry &
Roxy Music changed from here to Avalon, but there is a clear lineage from
"2HB" right to "Avalon" itself. Listen and dream, music & poetry rarely gets
better than the musings of these fellows.
