Hello I have a question about the extent of the regime's ability to design work flow
And its ability to deal with the scanner

Okay, we can answer those questions. What do you want to know?

You can design workflows as complex as you wish, but depending on your worklfow need it might be more suitable/confortable/easier/cost effective to use an stand alone BPM server integrated with Alfresco instead of the embeded Activit Engine.

AFAIK there is not direct integration between Alfresco (not even Alfresco One/Enterprise) and scanners. If what you want to do is to scan directly from Alfresco you will probably have to make your own integration for it.Not a simple task.

I agree with Igor that you can design a workflow to meet your requirements, whatever those may be. Your workflow can run in Activiti which is embedded in Alfresco. Or it can run in Activiti standalone and integrate with Alfresco via the REST API if needed.

There is no out-of-the-box support for scanners. But, most scanning software has several methods for putting scanned documents into a repository including:

 - Mapped network drive. The scanner software points to a mapped network drive, and that is mapped to Alfresco CIFS/SMB.
 - WebDAV. The scanner uses WebDAV to upload files and the URL it uses points to Alfresco WebDAV.
 - FTP. The scanner uses FTP to upload files, and the FTP server it points to is Alfresco's own FTP server.
 - CMIS. The scanner uses CMIS to upload files, and the CMIS service URL it points to is Alfresco's CMIS service URL.

So there are many, many options available for connecting your scanner to Alfresco, and none of them require writing your own integration.
