YA BACKGROUND

Created to empower  youth leadership toward the success of the 8 U.N. Millennium Development Goals.

The Annual Youth Assembly at the United Nations is produced and directed annually by Friendship Ambassadors Foundation, Inc., a 501c3 NGO formally affiliated with UN DPI and an NGO in Operational Relations with UNESCO.

Highlighted guests have included:

Mayor Cory Booker

Ronald Bruder

Dr. Arun Gandhi

Kathy Ireland

Rev. Jesse Jackson

Angelique Kidjo

Johann Olaf Koss

Londell McMillan

Ambassador Susan Rice

and many within UN leadership.

TEDx: UN PLAZA

In addition to the Youth Assembly at the United Nations, this year FAF is proud to be co-sponsoring a very special TEDxUNPlaza event on 18 January 2012.

For more information, contact in...@tedxunplaza.org

About TEDx:

TEDx's address an increasingly wide range of topics within the research and practice of science and culture. The speakers are given a maximum of 18 minutes to present their ideas in the most innovative and engaging ways they can. Past TED presenters include Bill Clinton, Jane Goodall, Malcolm Gladwell, Al Gore, Gordon Brown, Richard Dawkins, Bill Gates, educator Salman Khan, Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, and many Nobel Prize winners. TED's current curator is the British former computer journalist and magazine publisher Chris Anderson.

The Winter YA+10@UN:

In 2009, FAF reached a milestone: nearly 1,000 delegates attended the Youth Assembly, Leadership Seminar, and UC Peace Arts Festival that August. Due to the UN renovations taking place in NYC from 2009-2013, delegate numbers have been limited to 600 until renovations are complete.  A second high level gathering of the Youth Assembly was then added each January, to handle overflow requests from the summer event and the access and networking it provides.  The winter, Executive Sessions focus on developing skills and contacts for young professionals and brings a higher level of media attention.

Both YA's now reach capacity in record time - this why we urge all those interested to visit the YA registration page and sign up today.

Academic institutions are invited to form group delegations soon to ensure accommodations and participation in other Special Events during the program.

Now in its 10th Year, the YA is a relatively new and very successful project for Friendship Ambassadors Foundation, marking its decades long commitment to service in the name of the United Nations.

FAF is perhaps better known for its 40+ year history of cultural exchange, volunteer service, and homestay/networking opportunities throughout the world. That legacy is why FAF offers YA accommodations and extensions: reflecting FAF's long-revered approach to nurturing informal networking, an element that is central to all FAF events.  We hope you attend the YA and accept FAF's hospitality - because youth-to-youth networking promotes youth led development and long-lasting, professional relationships!

"I urge you to see your time (at the YA) as a call to action. The world needs each and every one of you to do your part in transforming our world and building a more sustainable and equitable future for all."

          - Ban Ki-Moon, United Nations Secretary General

"It is a great pleasure to send greetings to Friendship Ambassadors Foundation's Youth Delegates. I can't thank you enough for demonstrating your commitment to making a difference; I encourage each of you to continue to give back to others."

         - Michael R. Bloomberg, Mayor, New York City

"If you saw the impact you had on the youth (and young at heart) attending (FAF's Youth) Assembly, you would have to shade your eyes from the brightness of hope."

     - Paulette Schatz, Project Manager, U.N. Development Programme (UNDP)

"Most inspiring to me was the excitement, enthusiasm and genuine appreciation that the participants shared following the event. It is a powerful experience to meet so many others who recognize importance in the same issues you do."

- Katy Mixter, Program Associate, Corporate Sustainability, Citigroup

"The opportunity to share PepsiCo's social and environmental initiatives with the YA attendees was a pleasure and inspiration.  With future leaders of the caliber of those I had the good fortune to meet, I am more heartened than ever that our planet, and the communities which share its resources, are in very capable hands."

"For the foundation, the YA is core to our mission," said FAF's Executive Director and YA cofounder Patrick Sciarratta.  "Here we have created a new opportunity to provide meaningful, cultural exchange by bringing together UN staff, youth leaders from over 40 countries, recognized celebrities, and select NGOs dedicated to the success of the Millennium Development Goals. We view this as a 'united cultures' project at the United Nations because we invite the world into a great networking opportunity for human security and global development."

"We want to empower youth leaders to create careers and other opportunities in fulfillment of the MDGs."  Mr. Sciarratta concluded, "If peace through cultural exchange is indeed FAF's mission, then the YA at the UN is the place and programme that will ensure its success."
