Hi all,

I would like to learn how to use the planner. Would there be any one able to show me?

Sure, happy to demo it. Pick a day and I can bring down some rough cut wood to plane.

I would also be interested in learning to use it. My schedule is fairly open but also somewhat erratic—let me know what time you settle on and I'll see if I can make it. (Or, if you have a couple times that would work equally well, I'd appreciate if you'd let me know in case only one of them works for me.)

I'd also like to learn how to sharpen the knives—I may (eventually—maybe—too many projects, too little time—you know how it is...) be wanting to plane some pallet wood into usable boards, and this carries a risk of hitting embedded grit, copper collating wire, etc. I'd like to know how to fix the resulting nicks before causing them, so I don't inconvenience others wanting to use the tool.

Tyler, is that something you know how to do? If not, is there someone else who would be willing to teach me? Thanks!

I'd recommend not doing it on ours. I do know how to sharpen the knives. I've only recently did my first swap on a friends. It was a huge pain to align the blades perfectly after doing so. We ended up using a dial indicator to get it "perfect".

You can check the material using a magnet for some materials, but it's not a perfect method and will only pickup ferrous stuff.

If I were going to use it for that, I'd go with something that uses replaceable tips on a helical cutter head. Cutech makes a nice planer and jointer that work this way and the inserts aren't terribly expensive. It will be a much better use of your time and quick to replace them.

On second thought, a router sled might be a better way to flatten the material without having a ton of things to sharpen and realign if you do hit something.

Regarding knife sharpening, there are a number ways, and an number of
sharpener systems as well. Some do all the work for you, others are
trainers for doing it by hand. Part of what you need to know before you
start is they angle and grind.

As I knife person, I would say you should use a utility blade for work
that you _know_ could knick your blade, instead of damaging a good
knife. (right tool for the right job)

I second Tyler's suggestion NOT to run pallet wood through the planer.  Lost 2 sets of good blades learning that the hard way in my own tool.

That works for me. Would 630 or 7 work for everyone interested?
