Want to give organic agriculture a try? Do you love high school students, hard work and a beautiful setting?    

 

The Prairie Farm Corps is a paid job training program that immerses high school students in sustainable agriculture, farm to table cooking and professional development.  We’re located in the Prairie Crossing Community, one of the nation’s first conversation communities to integrate farmland preservation and ecosystem repair into its development plan.  We’re looking for enthusiastic, hard-working adults who love teenagers to lead small teams in the field.  No prior farming experience necessary, just must be willing to get dirty, break a sweat and pay attention to the details.  It’s a great way to get your feet wet in farming and leading teams, as we provide significant training in both areas and are literally next door to a farmer training program and several large organic farms.  Spend a season with us while investigating your next move.  But you must LOVE high school students.  More details below and here:

CREW LEADER INTERNSHIP DETAILS

The Prairie Farm Corps is seeking energetic individuals (ages 18 and above) to lead teams of area high school students to grow, cook, promote and market healthy food raised on a local farm. Successful candidates will be hard-working, team players interested in organic agriculture, healthy food, leadership development and working with youth.

 

Prairie Farm Corps Crew Leader - Position Details

 

Who:   Adults (ages 18 and above) who are energetic, reliable, and have a demonstrated interest in sustainable agriculture and working with youth. Applicants must be willing to work outdoors in all conditions and have reliable transportation.

 

What:  Work on an organic farm to grow, eat and distribute vegetables through farmers market sales and community donations. Serve as an empowering leader for a crew of 15 youth, ages 15-18. Develop leadership skills while working within a collaborative team. Compensation is an hourly rate of $10/hour. Benefits include farm produce, lunch daily, and farm training for individuals interested in careers in agriculture or in a related field. Also, if interested and available, housing could be provided during the internship in exchange for weekend greenhouse care.

 

When: The complete internship includes work from March through October.

            March 5 – June 15: 16 hours/week including:

·       April 3 – June 5: Tuesdays, 4:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

May 12, 8:00 a.m. – 4 p.m. – Organic Plant Sale & Farm Open House

June 18 – August 10: 35-40 hours/week

·       Monday – Thursday, 7 a.m. – 3 p.m.

·       Some late Mondays from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. or early Thursdays from 5 a.m. – 3 p.m.

August 7, 4:30 p.m. – 7 p.m. - Celebration Dinner

August 13 – October 31: 16 hours/week (to be scheduled)

 

Where: 32400 North Harris Road, Grayslake, Illinois, 60030. The Prairie Crossing Farm is a 100-acre certified organic farm owned by Liberty Prairie Foundation. The Foundation supports educational programming at the Prairie Crossing Farm to educate and inspire people to value healthy food, land, and community through experiences on our farm.
