I've learned from my own experience that uninstalling CS3 and then reinstalling the entire suite fixes the issue. Since my last post in February 2008 I've not had an issue and have worked extensively between AI and PSD.

I don't intend to upgrade to Illustrator CS3 after reading this thread(the last messages). I have the CS2 version and nonetheless it lets me save the AI files proviso I do not put any text. Of course it is a problem for those who use illustrator for doing some typo. This bug has perhaps extended to the files which have no text?

Thank goodness for forums - I thought all was lost - Installed CS2 with Windows Vista. Couldn't save the files when there was text visible. Found that if you just hide the text and save then the file will save - thank you nph for the phrase - "turn off visibility of the the layers prior to saving" . That was enough for me to try out the "hide" the text before saving route.

It doesn't save with my CS2 even if I hide the text , I must suppress the layer with text if I want to save the file...

Ok... even with a couple of layers so long as I hide the text I can save, I must not be doing anything too complicated like you are though.
How would I supress a layer? Of course now I can't get the help file to run - sigh.

Ha I finally understand the way you hide the text : you probably use a mask , that way indeed it is possible to save. ( yesterday I only clicked on the eye near the layer for hiding it...)
Thanks.

Yes - use "Ctrl 3" after selecting your object to hide it on screen.
However I have found something else out - can save a proper Illustrator CS2 file with text showing if you uncheck the "create PDF compatible file" box when the save options appears.
So some success. I am sad that I cannot save out into a.pdf file though for my students of my website - that grieves me. I have managed to copy and paste into a paint programme to save as a .jpg but I did really want a .pdf... never mind.
Hope this helps a little.

WORK ROUND LOTS OF TESTING , NEED FEEDBACK

I can confirm this behaviour with both Avira and with NOD 32 , and microsoft ZUNE services , simply disabling any of these products will allow saving in illustrator, no need to unistall the app , just make sure it is disabled when you go to save ..

I have a hunch it is something along the lines of virtual keys and for some reason I have yet to come across the issue when the AI file doesnt have fonts in it , I havent had chnce to mess about and see if different types of fonts behave differently, or of layers and other options do anything , but I can say I can save ai files sometimes .... Ie even with antvirus running I can save a simple illustartor file with shapes and so forth , but the moment I add fonts in then I have to disable anitvirus , just during the save , then I can turn it back on and work normally ... go figure ... yes this is annoying , and potentally dangerous , as it ight be just when I disable that the worls nastyies bug enters my system , but hey it takes abou 30 seconds to do , and other than that AI working perfectly now , so work round is all good as far as I can see , I sitll not happy that going on 3 years and no perminate fix from adobe ... but progess is good . I want others to try this , along with disabling any other programs , I want to try and come up with results others are having , we might be able to shed some light for the bug fixers at adobe ..

PS I didnt see this happen when I used to run AVG7 , but the version 8 is really not good for me , so I recently had to change to a differen Antivirus , then all the Ai troubles started ... I even did a clean install with only antivirus and Illustrator .. still had the issue .. the one thing I havvent tried , is a clean instal with no antivirus , install illustrator , then add antivirus AFTER AI install .. anyone done this and had good results?

PS my system is VIsta Ultimate AMD proc 1g ram Nvidia cards x2 in SLI

I know some may think we are not meant to be doing the job of the bug fixers , but I think it has gone on for far too long and we should definatly offer any or all help we can to them so this issue is fixed for good , it is really been a pain for many years now I want to squash this bug ASAP

Hi,

I had this problem as well. Through trial and error I discovered that if I deselect (uncheck?) "Copy as PDF" in the File and Clipboard Preferences, Illustrator finally saved/save as.

I also had this problem of unknown error, unable to save illustration and not enough memory. I am running Illustrator CS2 on windows xp (pentium 4, 3.40 ghz with 1gb of RAM). I also run Photoshop CS2 and Indesign CS2. I have not had any issues with any other program except Illustrator.

I also tried many of the forum suggestions such as disabling version cue, deleting preference files, settings, unchecking pdf compatibility, rolling back Windows Media Player 11 and even re installing Illustrator CS2. None of those worked for me until a fellow designer suggested that the folder size where my files were stored was too big. I am currently on a network with 40 other users with over 1 terabyte of storage space on the server. Hard disk space should not have been an issue. Anyway, the folder my files occupied was over 60 gigs. I backed up to disk about 40 gigs and now I have no errors with Illustrator at all. I'm not sure if the hard disk space on a home computer would act the same as a network server but it would be worth a shot cleaning up some of that hard disk space.

Thanks Kevin!

I just tried stopping Zune services and that finally solved the can't save problem for me. For anyone not sure how to do this go Ctrl+Alt+Del > Task Manager > Services tab > R-click the two Zune entries

Thanks again

glad to help ! I am not sure why this happens .. that is the big question .. I have even had times where I cant save , then diasble some program, like maybee NOD32 , then save , turn NOD back on , can save normmally , even now that the offending program is back on and then never see the issue with that particular file again , some weeks pass by and some other document triggers the fault , I disable NOD32 and can save perfect , turn it back on and cant save again .. turn NOD32 off with that file and saves work fine .. It really drives me crazy from a troubleshooting point of view because the behaviour is not consistant and really tricky to produce on demand . I do not have a list of programs that do this , but so far ZUNE is very high on the list , and infact on the ZUNE support boards , the Microsoft team have confirmed this as a bug .. I personally dont have zune and have never installed it , but this issue came up as soon as I switched from my long time favorite Anti Vrus ( AVG 7 ) over to Avira Anti-virus .. Since that was the only recent addition , I quickly suspected it as the source of my troubles .. I then had need for a clean install and decided to try out NOD32 , (thinking I would avoid the trouble that Avira aparently brought to my AI life) and found the same issue come about , and when I turn off Nod32 problem gone .. I am just stummped , but at least I can save :) I wonder what other programs might be doing this as well? by the way I am on Vista , so not sure if that makes any difference as well?

This problem still occurs.
2 weeks ago I found that Last.fm software troubled Illustrator CS3.
I uninstalled Last.FM and the "save problem" was gone.
Today the problem was back... I remembered that yesterday iTunes had an update to 8.0. I killed the iTunesHelper process with the TaskManager and voila... the problem is fixed again.

I'm using Windows Vista / CS3.

I was having the "saving" problems on my system as well, then I discovered a bad font file in the fonts folder of windows itself
(not in illustrator folder although I did take a precautionary measure of deleting all the fonts from the font folder of illustrator...., anyway, oddly enough when I deleted my bad font file, my saving issues were gone.

the proof was when I noticed the problem didnt occur on my other PC until I had installed the same fonts across both PC's:

eliminated font on PC1 = problem fixed!
eliminated font on PC2 = problem fixed!

very weird,... (but not really if know those adobe guys :(

Beware that Mac OS X 10.4.11 is not compatible with Rosetta based programs. I was not having any problems until I upgraded my system software to Mac OS X 10.4.11 and then started having similar problems with Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0 and Illustrator 12.0.1. The only solution that worked for me is to downgrade my system software back to 10.4.9. Everything now work as they should at least until I'm ready to upgrade to latest versions of Elements, Illustrator as well as the system software.

I had the same problem, so I deleted the "settings" folder and I deleted all the the fonts that i had installed in the last week...and everything worked. I'm assuming that there were conflicts with the fonts that I had in my windows/fonts folder

yes illustrator seems to freak out if you have a bad font installed. We have even seen AI crashing in these scenarios. Other cases where AI can start throwing such messages is when you have a real complex type art (stuff with rotation , transparency, kerning applied etc..)

CANNOT SAVE any .ai files (get "unknown error" message), but I can "save as" to pdf and I can save for Web, so I can save an editable format (the pdf) and proofs things (jpg).

I'm not sure if this exact problem was addressed. I'm in the midst of trying things (and building this week's ads!) so I'll report as I go, but trashing my pref's did nothing.

I recently installed a copy utility for archiving, Uninstalling that is my next test.

But if anyone has any insight on not being able to save .ai files, but being able to do other saves, I'm listening!

Had trouble exporting a decent pdf/jpg/png from Illustrator, as

PDF had symbols messed up and random lines
JPG had insufficient memory,
PNG would not complete due to unknown error [IMer]

in the end i
1) exported the file as a EPS,
2) opened it in photoshop (300dpi) and then
3) printed to ADOBE PDF printer as a HIGH QUALITY PRINT (as opposed to STANDARD)

this of course doesn't solve the pre-existing issues, but at least you'll be able to get the work out.

To anyone with a problem CS3 Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign - unable to save... save box flashes up for a second then the program just lock ups...

Ok for photoshop you have to disable version cue...Edit > Preferences > File Handling - make "enable sure version cue" is unticked. That fixes photoshop.

For Illustrator an Indesign it's different. Someone said you can just go into C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS3\Support Files\Contents\Windows\Version Cue... and rename the "Version Cue" folder to "old version cue" and it would work. It didn't for me.

After reading on the web, I uninstalled Bonjour and I uninstalled CS3. I then reinstalled the entire CS3 but this without the "Version Cue" program selected. Then once installed, I went into the Version Cue folder in illustrator and renamed it to "old version cue". Then both illustrator and indesign saved fine again. A week ago the whole thing was working find then all of a sudden it wouldn't save...I wish I knew what had changed on my computer...obviously i downloaded some kind of update which screwed with everything. Who knows...but now it works.

OK, after much frustration with Illustrator CS3 on a PC, I decided to try this tack and it has since worked...

When you are in your file, go to File>Print and set your printer to be "Adobe PDF". Don't hit Print, instead hit Done.

You can then Save or Save As accordingly. No hanging, no greying out, no having to end the program and re-launch. How ridiculous, but it works.

Adobe - sort this mess out, please!

Text is not a part of the work I'm doing and I am unable to send Shane a file because I CAN'T save it one way or another.

It's a bit irritating to see the number of posts on this and still, in CS3 the issue persists.

Come on, Adobe! I've been using your products since 1986. Let's fix this - isn't this an important piece of software? I want to use the products I purchase!
