Object Handles Have Disappeared

Hi,
I am using Illustrator CS4. I don't know what I've done, but for some reason, my resize/scale/transform handles have disappeared from all of my objects. It seems to be a global setting problem, as it is not exclusive to one particular file. Everything is behaving like I a selecting with the "direct selection" tool even when I am using the "selection" tool, e.g. all I can do is grab anchor points.
