With the art market joining the rest of the economy in free fall, it's
nice to see one ambitious group of talented young artists standing
their ground.
The other day Thomas Lumley, 28-year-old brother of the Earl of
Scarborough (sic), joined fellow painters Charlie Ward and Jonathan
Bishop - as well as Sam Pelly, photographer brother of royal friend
Guy - for a collective exhibition.
But perhaps as remarkable as the staging of the show was the boys'
success in persuading a host of society beauties to abandon their
usual Chelsea haunts and trek across London to Gallery 27 in
fashionably shabby Shoreditch.
'It was certainly more difficult to sell pieces than it was at my last
exhibition a couple of years ago, when I sold out,' says Thomas, who
played host to racing driver Jenson Button's ex-girlfriend Florence
Brudenell-Bruce as well as crooner James Blunt's sister Daisy and his
on-off squeeze, barrister Verity Evetts.
'I kept prices as low as I could and we had a lot of people coming to
look around. Luckily, I've got enough private work to stop me being
destitute just yet.'
