Hi All,

I have a 1983 Passport 40 and the knees that hold my midships chainplates have separated from the hull.  I'm in the process creating new, larger ones to increase the surface area that's attached to the hull.  I've heard that it might be possible to attach this knee to the bulkhead to increase its strength. Does anyone know anything about this?

Thanks, Mike

I had this done to my boat early on. The knees were glassed into the hull. Cost was about $2-3,000! Done very well have you inspected the other chain plates?

Thank you,

We did this several years ago.

We looked into bolting the knee to the salon bulkhead, but this would require exposed bolts and chain plates in the salon.  Must also ensure that the bulkhead is tabbed well to the hull.

We elected to have a large anchor point glassed lower on the hull below the chain plate, had the knee rebuilt, then ran rigging from the chainplate to the anchor point.  All within the cabinetry.  This has held up well for many years.  Cost similar to George's quote.

Yes
That si what I had done on my 1987 Passport 40. After glassing the original knee back in a wooden block was fashioned to fit snugly between the knee and the bulkhead. Bolts then went through the knee, block and bulkhead. The middle port knee was loose but I had it done on the starboard side as well. The yard manager, knew Robert Perry and discussed this with him. He thought this was an excellent idea since he says he originally designed the boat to have the chain plates fixed to the bulk heads but the builder did not do this so he could have more flexibility with the cabin layout.

I glassed an extended knee on to the bulk head and thru bolted the chain plate. See http://svgrendel.com

Thanks Bob.  I’ve had all 6 knees rebuilt and doubled the size of the two middle ones to maximize the surface area.   We will splash in April and I’ll let you know how it all works out.
