Hi.
I am the happy new owner of a passport 51 formerly known as Namirda, now Tanua. One query I have is the base plate that the mast sits on has some quite solid rust. Anyone else out there had experience with this and suggested recommendations going forward.
Cheers Anthony

Anthony, I have a Passport 47 which is probably the same hull without
extension. I¹m just guessing. My mast is manufactured by Forespar. You
can purchase a new mast foot or shoe or whatever they call it from
Forespar. Also, the base of your mast is probably corroded also. If you
cut off about an inch of the mast, you will have a clean fit between the
mast shoe and bottom of the mast. You can make up the difference with a
1² phenolic shim. I have one in storage I think that I¹ll be happy to
send you. I just installed a brand new mast and took the shim out from my
old mast.

Hi Anthony,

Well done buying the 51! I own hull #6, Eagles Quest. We're in Hong Kong at the moment. There's only 8 of us 51s out there so we need to stick together!!

My mast foot looks much the same as you described. I'd really appreciate if you could keep us updated on how the project goes if you proceed. I'm still a few years from retiring and sailing across big oceans so I've put jobs like that, electronics and standing rigging off until we're ready. However, I'll be very interested to see how you go!!

Cheers,

Brian

Here's a set of photos (see link above) of a photo share of working around the keelson / mast step on China Doll. There's an anti pumping rod that runs from this plate to the couch roof. Tim Ball on Ex Matsu [(now on the market again as BareFoot) which is hull #8, along with ex: Lisa Marie, hull #4, in La Paz known as CasaDeMar.] Tim had this refitted at a shop in Annapolis; I cleaned up the one on China Doll and painted it to slowdown the mid steel from loosing all its tensile strength. We have now a new mast that uses a complimentary tie down turnbuckle system that ties the mast step to the keelson. So the anti pump rod is no longer as needed on the new mast system. Let me know if the photo share link doesn't work as the group isn't allow to post RTF with inline photos.

Wow, thank you all for going to the effort of sharing your initial thoughts and experience on the matter. It great to be a part of such a close and supportive group! We are in the process of moving aboard so I will get back to looking closer at the matter a little later. Warm regards Anthony

Hi Guys.
Hope all is well. I just want to ask if your boats are also quite creeky in a sea when lerching from side to side. In particular around the wood floor at the galley entrance step. Think it may have something to do with the shifting weight in the water tanks or hull flex?

My boat makes all sorts of creaking noises at sea. I don't think that's
so much because of water sloshing around in the tanks -- the baffles
should keep that to a minimum -- but more because of hull flex. The
effect seems greatest where the upper and intermediate shroud
chainplates come through the deck and are fastened. My standing rigging
is on the loose side.

I have a P51 as well. I don’t have the squeaky noise even heavy seas. It may be because I replaced stainless water tanks with fiberglass that incorporated the hull above the bilge.

Good luck.
