I’ve been working with Flad Architects for several years on a Passive House classroom building at Laney College in Oakland. Chris Drinkwater (cdrin...@flad.com) is now leading the project on their end and having some challenges with entry doors. They are glazed and need to have commercial hardware. There are relatively many doors in the project, so the airtightness is critical. He’s reached out to a few vendors, with little success. I wonder if anyone has solid leads they could offer. The windows are already purchased (Alpen) but it would be a great publicity opportunity for a vendor.

Thanks,
Graham

Graham,
My doors from Innotech (BC) have performed flawlessly since we installed them in January, 2010.  My daughter's teenage friends almost took them off the tilt-turn hinges a few times when they couldn't figure out the operation, but we got them back on the hinges.  Passing the teenager test, I expect they will last forever.  I know they install hundreds of these doors in apartments because they are tested airtight (triple seals and cams on all 4 sides).  Not sure they have commercial hardware available, but you could check.  Juanita answers the phone and can often answer your questions.  And Mika can tell you even more about their product line: Mika....@innotech-windows.com

Glo Windows also has high performance products.  They are based in Missoula and import from Germany.  Not sure about commercial hardware.  Mark Wells is quite helpful: ma...@glowindows.com

If wood doors are an option, you'll do well with HH Windows from Seattle.  Hannes has been building commercial doors for decades: han...@hhwindows.com

You might also check with Robert Tanner in case Tanner Window & Doors has commercial hardware: rob...@peakbp.net

Closer to home, you might check NanaWall using German components but manufacturing in Richmond, CA.  Matt Thomas is a great source of information: matt....@nanawall.com

There are so many other choices now, and if these folks can't help you, they might guide you to who can.

Tad

Sorry that I forgot a local expert in high-performance residential and commercial doors: Hammer & Hand.  Contact Daniel Thomas    dan...@hammerandhand.com
