I'm using GWT 2.5.1  with java 1.6.

recently I've found in my server log quite a few occurrences  of the  following error:

com.google.gwt.user.server.rpc.UnexpectedException: Service method 'public abstract java.lang.String com.google.gwt.logging.shared.RemoteLoggingService.logOnServer(java.util.logging.LogRecord)' threw an unexpected exception: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com/google/gwt/thirdparty/debugging/sourcemap/SourceMapping
at com.google.gwt.user.server.rpc.RPC.encodeResponseForFailure(RPC.java:389)
at com.google.gwt.user.server.rpc.RPC.invokeAndEncodeResponse(RPC.java:579)
at com.google.gwt.user.server.rpc.RemoteServiceServlet.processCall(RemoteServiceServlet.java:208)
at com.google.gwt.user.server.rpc.RemoteServiceServlet.processPost(RemoteServiceServlet.java:248)
at com.google.gwt.user.server.rpc.AbstractRemoteServiceServlet.doPost(AbstractRemoteServiceServlet.java:62)

That class is erroneously packaged in gwt-servlet-deps.jar in 2.5.1 (that JAR is only present in the ZIP distribution downloadable from code.google.com), and was moved to gwt-servlet.jar in 2.6.
Try updating to GWT 2.6.1, or deploy gwt-servlet-deps.jar (and make sure it's from the same GWT version as gwt-servlet.jar).
