Here we have a bumper crop of 14 definitions for MAFFIE. Vote for two no later than 5 PM EDT, Monday July 24.

1.  [Colloq.] a stupid fellow; a poor-spirited person.

2.  a familiar name for any of the fleet of small tramp steamers that
formerly supplied isolated communities in the Scottish Western Isles.

3.  a baked sausage roll; also called pig-in-a-blanket.

4.  easily duped or fooled.

5.  [Obs.] a milkmaid.

6.  a sort of game, possibly played by children [Robert Burns]

7.  a lone male klipspringer antelope who has lost  his life partner.

8.  the legal taking of property that belongs to another person or group;
eminent domain, for example.

9.  name given to a pup in training as a hunting dog.

10.  an unusual companion, from "My Alien Friend", first used in the
"Space Children" series of children's books.

11.  a person regarded as having little worth to society.

12.  [Slang]  a very old, stale cigarette.

13.  [Scot.] a bump on the head from a blow or other impact.

14.  A farmer's cart.

I'll take 1 (a stupid fellow; a poor-spirited person) and 14 (a farmer's cart), two very different definitions, but at least I've shown that I've read'em all.

My votes g for 1 and 13 mainly because I love the idea of having a name for when I bump my heard: "Oh - I got a maffie" . Just makes me laugh.

now that is an interesting one - "reply x" strikes again -

this one arrives at me as to "Dix group - from Dix Group" looking at source for the message eventually I can see it is from Lorise <lor...@aol.com>  maybe one of the computer geeks can explain how that happened

also - as  'reply list' it tells me now that it is from Lorise - see below - but just reading the message shows only to to and from as the group
