Hello all,
Welcome to the CryoLink discussion list!
CryoLink is a moderated discussion group where people can socialize, support each other, and foster advancement in the fields of cryonics, futurism, and life extension.
Here's a list of things I'd like to share with you about the new group:
1) This group is intended to replace the "new_cryonet" discussion list, as the preferred primary email discussion group for the listed communities.
2) As of today, CryoLink has 196 members. The bulk of the active cryonics discussion community members are "all here" (plus a few more). The member list for CryoLink was built from pre-existing discussion lists, especially from the "new_cryonet" yahoo group. More specifically: With only a few exceptions, every individual who posted on "new_cryonet" within the last 5 years is already a member of this group, plus about 50 cryonics and life extension enthusiasts from other locations.
3) Most of the CryoLink members were automatically added. If you do not wish to be a member of CryoLink, the welcome email that you received includes a link that you can use to unsubscribe. (Every message which comes from this list includes links for managing or modifying your membership.)
4) This is a moderated discussion list. The main motivation for creating this group was to make basic moderation a possibility. Various respected individuals and leaders from the cryonics community have written their wish that the "new_cryonet" list was moderated... and unfortunately that was never implemented. Last week, I personally spent about two days scanning over five years worth of messages from "new_cryonet" (1500 digest messages containing an average of 10 individual messages each!). It turns out that "new_cryonet" has about 150 actively posting members. The majority of the messages from "new_cryonet" that could be candidates for moderation, were mostly written by less than 8 individuals (who will not be named!). The primary purpose of this group is to provide a pleasant, and grief-free communication channel for the cryonics, futurism, and life extension communities.
5) In case you are curious about how moderation works on this list:
-A list of current moderation rules is located on the group home page. (The link is below).
-The purpose of moderation is to keep discussions civil, not to censor diverse opinions.
-CryoLink currently has two moderators. The intention is to add more moderators over time.
-Every newly joined group member, and any member who repeatedly breaks the moderation rules, is set to be a "moderated member".
-Members are generally marked as "unmoderated" once they have posted a few messages, or have established a good posting reputation. (This will be most members.)
-Whenever a message from a moderated member is posted to the group, the moderators are notified so that they can approve or reject the message before posting.
-If the message is approved, it will be posted to the list like any other message.
-If a message is blocked, then the member who posted it will generally be notified so that they may make adjustments, and repost the message later, if desired.
-That's pretty much it. Moderation is not an exact science, but the intention here is to be good stewards of this group, and to serve the listed communities.
6) Your default member username was derived from the beginning of your email address. This may not be your preferred username. If you wish to change your group username, you can do so by modifying your "Membership and email settings" from the Google Group link. The button for modifying your membership settings is in the upper right corner of the Google Group page. The button looks like a person with a "gear" symbol next to it. This is also the place where you can modify your group message delivery settings if desired. By default, all members were set to receive a "Digest" of group messages, with up to 25 messages per email. The default settings can be changed at will.
7) What is public or private in this group?:
-The name and description of this group are publicly visible.
-Group messages are publicly visible.
-The email addresses of post authors are visible in the emails received by other members, but are not visible on the web interface.
