This might be a good way to publish some of your work.

I received this email today, and I thought the group might be interested.

Certainly, CHUG membership has enough really top-notch work that would be a candidate for this publication!

Dear Colleagues,

Have you heard about the new GIS Snapshots feature that the online journal Preventing Chronic Disease (PCD) has added to its line-up?  GIS Snapshots highlight the innovative use of maps to enhance the surveillance, prevention, and treatment of chronic diseases:   http://www.cdc.gov/pcd/announcements.htm#gis

PCD created GIS Snapshots with the goal of providing a venue for public health professionals to highlight the diverse ways in which GIS is being used to efficiently and innovatively improve chronic disease prevention and health promotion. Maps are excellent tools for revealing public health concerns that are not readily apparent in data tables and other graphic representations.  Maps also provide an excellent format for communicating public health burdens and needs to the general public, decision makers, and partners. Integrating GIS into the decision-making process of state and local health departments, community-based organizations, health care facilities, and other organizations can play a key role in guiding the development of effective programs and policies for chronic disease prevention and control.

We encourage you to submit a map for GIS Snapshots. Just send  a single map (or multiple maps) with 4 paragraphs highlighting the map’s main messages and how it can be used to improve chronic disease prevention and health promotion. Our first posting for GIS Snapshots was on October 31, 2013, from the Minnesota Department of Health, and tracks clinic performance to improve vascular care:  http://www.cdc.gov/PCD/issues/2013/13_0301.htm

We hope that you will consider submitting maps to PCD so that others can learn from your experiences and so that we can expand the use of GIS to address local concerns regarding chronic disease surveillance, prevention and treatment. For more information and submission instructions, see our Author Guidelines:  http://www.cdc.gov/pcd/for_authors/types_of_articles.htm#GIS

Sincerely,

Sam Posner, Editor in Chief

Michele Casper, Map Editor for GIS Snapshots
