Young Entrants Support Scheme

A young farmer at work.

This scheme provides assistance to young farmers setting-up as head of the holding for the first time.

Purpose

Young farmers represent a key factor in the sustainable development of the farming sector. This scheme supports the establishment of young farmers (under 40) who possess adequate skills and competence and are setting-up as head of the holding for the first time. 'Setting up as head of holding' includes those who have set-up as head of holding for the first time within the previous 12 months.

Available Aid

The assistance package will include all or part of the following:

  • a one off grant payment for capital investment for expenses incurred when young entrant is setting-up as head of holding for the first time
  • access to a dedicated Young Entrants’ Business Enabler Service, which will advise on training, knowledge transfer and joint venture opportunities as well as matching young entrants with appropriate established farmers who wish to explore different working patterns
  • access to funded mentoring services from established farmers.

The Young Entrants Business Enabler Service

The Young Entrants Business Enabler Service is a first point of contact for young people who are interested in the Young Entrants Support Scheme (YESS), or wish to access advice and guidance on opportunities available to them in the agricultural sector in Wales. The service works in partnership with Wales Young Farmers Clubs (YFC) to promote and develop opportunities for young farmers in Wales.
